Q2. Define Tauheed, what is its impact on individual life and


society? Elaborate?

Belief in the Unity or Oneness of Allah is known as Tauheed which is the


foundation and the most important principle of the Islamic faith. All other beliefs,
commands, and laws of Islam stand firm on this foundation and receive strength
from this source.

Tauheed means that there is One, Supreme Lord Who is Omnipotent and
Omnipresent, to Whom all praise and all worship is due as He is the Creator,
Master, Owner, and Sustainer of the universe. He has no partner or associate, no
parents or son and no one shares in His authority or power. He is independent,
incomparable, and eternal. He is beyond anything which the mind or senses of
man can comprehend or imagine.

The Quran says: “…there is nothing whatever like unto Him…”

No Plurality
Allah is Unique; there is none like Him. The plurality in His existence is completely
negated by the Quran when it says:

“Take not (for worship) two gods; for He is just one God”.

“If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods besides Allah there would
have been confusion in both”.

His Uniqueness
Allah is unique in person as there is none like Him. He is unique in attributes
because the attributes which He possesses are perfect and no one comes near
Him in those attributes.
He is unique in actions because what He has done or can do no one also has done
or can do.

The Originator/Creator
Allah is the Originator and the Creator of the heavens and earth. He is the Law
Giver, He is Ever living, Self-subsisting. He feeds all but is not fed by anyone. He is
free from all human weaknesses and wants. He does not get tired and requires no
sleep or rest. Allah is Omnipotent and Omniscient; nothing is hidden from him; He
knows everything as He is Omnipresent, present everywhere.

Impact of Tauheed on Individual Life


The doctrine of Tauheed frees man from slavery to the forces of nature, non-
living objects, and other human beings, thus leading to his moral and spiritual
development and advancement. This belief produces the highest degree of self-
respect and self-esteem in a believer who knows that Allah alone is the possessor
of all powers and that no one besides Him can harm or benefit him or provide for
his needs. This conviction makes him independent and fearless of all powers
other than Allah. At the same time, it inculcates modesty and humility in him
because he realizes that he is weak and helpless before Allah.

This belief produces a strong degree of determination, perseverance, and trust in


Allah which makes him brave and strong. He is ever hopeful of Allah’s mercy and
blessing. He keeps away from unfair means of achieving wealth or success.

He is purged of the feelings of jealousy, envy, greed, and becomes satisfied and
contented. His life is filled with piety, righteousness, and truthfulness.

He will constantly keep in view that whatever he possesses has been given by
Allah and that one day he will return to Him and submit an account of his life. The
sense of accountability will always remain firmly implanted in his mind and he will
never behave in an immoral and irresponsible way.

Impact of Tauheed on Society


Anyone can opt to become a member of a society based on the principle of
Tauheed. Islamic social order is on the basis of religious, moral, and the universal
principle of human brotherhood, which endeavors to secure happiness and
goodness with prosperity for both the individual and society.

The Islamic society is a vehemently integrated society grounded in the doctrine of


Tauheed which omits class conflict, social castes, and domination of the individual
over society or vice versa. All believers in such a society believe in one creed, one
code of life, and one final destiny that strengthens people’s relationship, social
solidarity, and mutual responsibility for the worldly success as well as hereafter.

Tauheed promotes to build a harmonious society, constructive interaction


between individual and society, and to realize the basic values of piety, truth,
justice, and love. The purpose of a society based on Tauheed is to build up a
man's personality, his social positive environment, and to co-operate with others
in pursuing healthy and constructive human activities. It implies the unity of
feeling in the Muslim society; the relationship between believers is like that of a
building, which is strengthened by one brick upon another.
