WHAT IS CREDIBILITY INTERVIEW

A credibility interview is an interview process conducted by the Home Office (a

ministerial department responsible for immigration, security, law, and order ) to
recognise and establish the best and genuine students. It is a simulation interview
process of a visa application introduced by the UKVI (UK Visas and immigration ).
The credibility interview with other documents submitted forms an integral part of
the visa application procedure that can either lead to a positive or negative result on
your visa application. During the interview, it is expedient that applicants state clearly
research they have carried out on studying and living in the UK.
Coming to study in the UK is a big decision and also a financial investment. Generally,
in deciding whether or not a visa applicant is a genuine student, the UKVI is taking
into account:
● The student’s reasons for coming to the UK
● The student’s immigration history in the UK and other countries
● The student’s education history plans for study and after study
● The student’s source of finance and circumstances
● If the student’s dependents intend to join them in the UK, they will be
considered.

PURPOSE OF A CREDIBILITY TEST

The purpose of a credibility test is to ascertain if you genuinely wish to study in the UK
and also to know if your declared circumstances are valid. In recent times, the UK
student visa (i.e. tier 4 General visa) policy has changed tremendously, putting
pressure on the sponsor (university and college). To verify the genuineness of
students, many universities have started credibility interviews. During the interview, it
is expedient to demonstrate that your English Language ability is sufficient to follow
your chosen program and level of study.

WHAT IS A TIER 4 VISA

Tier 4 visa is a study visa granted by the Uk government to allow immigrants usually
above the age of 16 from the non-European economy into the Uk as a student either
at a college or a university. Courses of study covered by this visa include degree level
courses and level 3 courses such as A levels. To apply for a Tier 4 student visa, you will
need to have received a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) at a UK
educational institution that holds a valid Tier 4 sponsorship license. You must have
enough funds to cater for yourself and pay for your tuition and living expenses
although this amount may vary concerning circumstances also.

WWW.SOLSTICEHEIGHT.COM 2
SOLSTICE HEIGHT GLOBAL CREDIBILITY TEST STUDY GUIDE

For applicants outside the Uk, the earliest you can apply for a Tier-4 visa is six months
before the start of your course and the decision on your visa application will be made
within three weeks. How long you can stay depends on the length of your study
program. With a Tier-4 visa, you can study and also work simultaneously. How much
work you do depends on your study program and your work schedule ( whether you
are working in or out of term-time).

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Credibility Interview questions are mainly about your institution, your proposed
study program, and proof of funds to show how you will finance your study. Your
answers will be typed up and used to assess if you are a genuine student when
deciding on your Tier 4 student visa application. Depending on where you are
applying, you will receive an email to your registered e-mail address asking you to
attend an interview as part of the application process. You should check your email
(including the spam folder) regularly, as your application is likely to be refused if you
do not attend an interview without giving prior notice.

FORM OF THE INTERVIEW

The interview will be conducted through a video conference, such as Skype, by

telephone or in-person. The interview result will be recorded in a typewritten
transcript format usually done by the interviewer. The interview transcript will be
considered alongside your visa application form and supporting documents by the
Entry Clearance Officer, who is responsible for the final decision on your Tier-4 visa.
The visa application decision will not be made at the interview.

THE INTERVIEWER

The Interviewer is a member of staff at the UKVI ( UK Visa and Immigration) office.
The credibility interview has a standardised format whereby applicants are asked a
series of questions. If answers provided by an applicant are too brief or generic, the
interviewer will not ask for further explanation or more information regarding the
question asked. Thus, it is required that applicants provide full and well-detailed
answers to every question. The Interviewer will keep a record of every repeat and
rephrase question during the interview, but the applicant can explain the reason for
the repetition. At the end of the interview, the interviewer will ask if the applicant has
further information to give and if the applicant is happy with the way the interview
was conducted.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

The Credibility interview, asides from confirming the genuineness of the applicant's
willingness to study in the Uk, also allows UKVI to assess the applicant's ability to
communicate well in English and thereby decides if applicants English language skills
are sufficient to live and study in the Uk.

DECISION

Based on the laid down guidelines, the interviewer makes an initial assessment of the
applicant through the performance from the interview and then transfers notes from
the interview to the ECO (Entry Clearance Officer) that afterwards makes a final
decision on the applicant's Tier-4 visa that can either be an acceptance or a refusal.

PREPARING FOR A CREDIBILITY INTERVIEW

The Credibility Interview is your chance to demonstrate to the UKVI that you are a
genuine student who is willing and has given yourself to necessary planning and
research before deciding what program and institution to study in the UK.
Oftentimes, prospective students receive a visa refusal due to their inability to rightly
communicate their intention, inadequate preparation, and providing a generic other
than well-tailored and detailed answers during the credibility interview.

Here are what you need to put to check before going to the interview:
● Go over your statement of purpose that was submitted when applying for
admission to the programme.

deliberate attention to the course modules.

● The Entry Clearance Officer should be convinced that the cost of your studies
will not leave you or your family in financial hardship. Be prepared to speak
about your, your family's income and your living costs.
● Be prepared to speak about where you will live and how much your
accommodation will cost.
● Be prepared to speak about how you will travel to and from your
accommodation and classes each day.
● Be prepared to speak about the Student Visa work restrictions.

PROBABLE REASONS FOR REFUSAL

There can be many reasons for visa refusals, but the following are the main reasons
for visa refusal in the UKVI interview.
The prospective student could not satisfy the Visa Officer that he had done proper
research of institutions and why he had selected his chosen institution.
The prospective student could not provide sufficient information about his intended
program, the structure, modules, content, assessment process and more.
The Prospective student can only provide general information about his plans after
study.
The prospective student could not justify the source of funds in his bank account, his
sponsors personal and professional information if applicable. Verification and
justification of funding are some of the main reasons for visa refusal.
The prospective student could not justify his/her gap in the study through work
experience, salary proof or any other valid proof.
All this can lead to doubt about the claims to be seeking entry to the UK as a student
hence the Visa Officer will most likely reject the student visa.
