SLG 1.5.2 Venn Diagrams

This document provides instruction on using Venn diagrams to illustrate set operations. It includes examples of Venn diagrams shaded to represent various sets, such as Set A, the complement of Set B, and the union of Sets A and B. Students are asked to identify which pre-drawn Venn diagram represents sets such as the intersection of Set A and the complement of Set B. The document concludes by providing the answer key for odd-numbered practice items asking students to match set expressions to Venn diagrams.

Subject Code Mathematics 1 Elementary Algebra

Module Code 1.0 Sets
Lesson Code 1.5.2 Venn Diagrams
Time Limit 30 minutes

TARGET

By the end of this module, students will have been able to:
1. illustrate set operations using a Venn diagram with two sets, and
2. do shading for set operations.

IGNITE 20 minutes

Venn diagram presents a visual representation of these operations and can be used to illustrate set
operations by shading the appropriate region in a Venn diagram.

U
Figure 1 is a Venn diagram where Set A is represented by the
circle on the left while Set B is represented by the circle on the
right.

A B
Figure 1

In Figure 2, it is shown that the region inside circle A is

shaded. The Venn diagram illustrates Set A.

Figure 2

In Figure 3, it is shown that the region outside circle B is

shaded. The Venn diagram illustrates Set B’ or
complement of B.

How can A ∪ B’ be illustrated in a Venn diagram? Shade the U

appropriate regions to illustrate A ∪ B’.

A B
Figure 4

Figure 5 illustrates A ∪ B’.

Note that the Venn Diagram of A ∪ B’ is the

union of A (Figure 2) and B’ (Figure 3).

Figure 5

A B A B A B
Figure 6 Figure 7 Figure 8

In Figure 6, the regions inside both circles are shaded. The Venn diagram illustrates A ∪ B, the union
of sets A and B.

In Figure 7, only the region common to both circles (the overlap) is shaded. The Venn diagram
illustrates A ∩ B, the intersection of sets A and B.

In Figure 8, the region inside Circle A is shaded but the region inside Circle B is excluded from the
shading. The Venn diagram illustrates A – B, the difference of sets A and B.

How can 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 − 𝐵 be illustrated in a Venn diagram?

To illustrate the difference of 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 and 𝐵, refer to Figure 6. The shading of Set B must be
excluded from Figure 6.

Thus, the resulting Venn diagram for 𝐴 ∪ 𝐵 − 𝐵 is the same as 𝐴 − 𝐵

How can 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ be illustrated in a Venn diagram?

To illustrate 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ the complement of 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 refer to Figure 7. The shading of 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ must be

outside 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵. The resulting Venn diagram for 𝐴 ∩ 𝐵 ′ is illustraded in the next page as Venn
diagram 15.

NAVIGATE 10 minutes

Illustrate the following sets and choose its corresponding Venn diagram number from given Venn
diagrams below. Assume that the circle on the left is Set A while the circle on the right is Set B.

1. 𝐴′ ∪ 𝐵 5. 𝐴 − 𝐵′

2. 𝐴′ ∪ 𝐵′ 6. 𝐵′ − 𝐴

3. 𝐵 ! ∩ 𝐴! 7. (𝐴 − 𝐵) ∪ (𝐵 − 𝐴)

4. 𝐵! ∩ 𝐴 !
8. (𝐵 − 𝐴)′
