ADding Fractions

This document discusses how to add and subtract fractions. It explains that to add or subtract fractions, they must have a common denominator. It provides steps for transforming fractions with different denominators into equivalent fractions with a common denominator. It also discusses how to add or subtract fractions and whole numbers. Key steps include finding the least common denominator, converting numerators proportionately, and then adding or subtracting the numerators of the equivalent fractions.

ADDITION OF FRACTIONS

 To add fractions, they must be SIMILAR fractions or in other

words, the denominator of each fraction must be the same.
 In adding similar fractions, we copy the denominator then add the
numerator.
 In adding dissimilar fractions, we must transform them to similar
fractions first before proceeding with the addition.

Example

In adding a whole number and a fraction, we just put the number beside
the fraction. We can also express it as an IMPROPER FRACTION.

Mixed Number Improper Fraction

3+ =3 3 =
5 5 5 5
Adding Fraction with Different Denominators

In transforming dissimilar fractions to similar fractions,

1. First, we need to find the least common denominator (LCD). We
get it by getting the least common multiple of the denominators of
each fraction to be added.
2. Next, after having the common denominator, we have to transform
the numerator to have the same value with the original fraction. We
do that by 1dividing the LCD by the denominator then 2multiply it
by the numerator.
3. Lastly, after transforming all fractions into similar ones, we can
now proceed with the addition of similar fractions.

Example
Step 1: Since the fractions are dissimilar.
3 4 We need to find the LCD by getting the LCM of 5
+ and 10.
10 15 10 = 5 2
15 = 5 3
LCM = 5 x 2 x 3 = 30
30÷10x 3 30÷15x4
Step 2.To get the value of numerators we apply this method.
1
dividing the LCD by the denominator
9+8 multiply it by the numerator.

Minuend Subtrahend Difference

Subtracting Fraction from a whole number

In subtracting a whole number and a fraction, we multiply the whole
number by the denominator of the subtrahend then subtract with the
numerator. The product of the whole number and the denominator of the
subtrahend becomes their common denominator.

Step 1: We multiply the minuend with the
(3x5) - 1 denominator of the subtrahend then subtract with the
5 numerator of the subtrahend.

15 - 1 Step 2: We subtract the numerators.
