Literature Review 2

This literature review examines previous studies on the impact of media exposure on youth educational performance. It analyzes social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, which are most used by young adults aged 18-24. A 2019 Pew Research study found that 76% of this age group uses Facebook, 44% use Twitter, 75% use Instagram, and 73% use Snapchat. Previous research has shown that increased media exposure can lead to more violent and risky behaviors in youth as well as earlier sexual activity. New forms of media have not been adequately studied but may have similar effects. Social media specifically has been found to reduce real-world social skills and increase feelings of isolation, while students report using it for social

Literature Review:

This literature review covers a variety of previous scientific studies that are related to the main goal of this
study, which is to investigate the impact of media exposure on youth educational performance. Analysis of
social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat because they are the most used
platforms. In 2019, the Pew Research Center released a statistical report titled "The Percentage of American
Adults Using Social Media, Including Facebook, Is virtually the same as in 2018" by Andrew Perrin and
Monica Anderson. The study focused on American adults aged 18-24 and found that 76% use Facebook, 44%
use Facebook Twitter, 75% use Instagram and 73% use Snapchat. This study is important because this age
group roughly matches the age of the current research sample (Perrin & Anderson, 2019).
The main effects of media exposure are an increase in violent and aggressive behaviors, an increase in risky
behaviors including alcohol and tobacco use, and an accelerated onset of sexual activity. New forms of media
have not yet been adequately studied, but there are concerns about the logical extension of previous research to
other forms of media and the amount of time the average child spends with increasingly sophisticated media.
(Villani 2001) Social media has created challenges with its negative impact on students. These challenges
include reduced face-to-face interaction skills, which contribute to greater feelings of isolation from reality
(Sutherland et al., 2018). In a recent study, college students were asked to identify the benefits of using social
media. They indicated that they use social media to explore their social lives and to keep in touch with friends
and family. This group of students also saw no benefit. Improving academic skills through the use of social
media (Boateng & Amankwaa, 2016).
International journal of Advanced Information Technology confirmed that there is a positive association
between media use academic achievement.
Their survey also revealed that the majority of respondentuse social media sites for chatting, not for academic
purposes. A study by Kogi State University found that student exposure to social media impact on their
academic performance. It is obvious that social media has a negative influence Academic performance of
students. If you do not do your studies, it's because you spend your time not reading books chat and make
friends on social media and it will definitely affect them negatively academic achievements.
Video games have become one of the favorite activity of children. This research links violent video games to
aggressive beliefs, attitudes and behaviors. The main objective of this study was to document adolescents'
video game habits and the level of parental supervision of adolescents' video game use. The second objective
was to examine the associations between exposure to violent video games, hostility, altercations with teachers,
school grades, and physical altercations. Additionally, path analysis was conducted in to test paths that lead
video game habits to outcomes. Six hundred student and seven eighth and ninth graders from four schools
participated. Teens who were exposed to more violence in video games were more hostile, argued more often
with teachers, got into physical fights more often, and did worse in school. Modes of mediation have been
discovered in which hostility mediates the relationship between violent video game exposure and performance.
Findings are interpreted and supported within the framework of the general pattern of aggression.(Merzel and
D’Afflitti 2003).
