Elc590 PS Outline Template

The document is an outline for a persuasive speech on banning texting and driving. The speech will follow Monroe's Motivated Sequence organizational pattern. It will begin with an attention getter using a video of a car crash to show the dangers of texting and driving. The body will discuss the problems of texting and driving like crashes and deaths. The solution proposed is imposing fines on those who drive while texting. The benefits of this solution include fewer car accidents and deaths since people will be less likely to text and drive due to fines. In conclusion, the speaker will ask the audience to consider taking action by understanding the effects of texting and driving.

PERSUASIVE SPEECH

Student’s Name : NURAIRIN NATASA BINTI ROSLI

Matric Number : 2022828032
Faculty / Group : FACULTY OF APPLIED SCIENCE
Lecturer’s Name : DR LATISHA ASMAAK SHAFIE

Speech Title : Banning Texting and Driving

Organizational Pattern: Monroe’s Motivated Sequence
Visual Aid : Powerpoint slides
General Purpose : To persuade
Specific Purpose : To persuade my audience that texting and driving should be banned
Central Idea : Today I like to discuss the problems with texting and driving, propose a new
law against texting and driving and explain the benefits.

Introduction

(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Attention)

I. Attention getter
A. Show video of car crash
B. How many of you think it is okay to drink and drive? Well, studies show that drivers are 4
times more likely to cause a crash while texting and driving than drinking and driving.

II. Reveal topic

A. Banning texting and driving. That would be the topic that I want to discuss for today.

III. Establish credibility

A. I researched and found stories of information about teens and adults getting killed
using cell phones without looking on the road. I have a lot against people who take
their eyes off the road just for a text that’s not urgent or important.

I. Today I like to discuss the problems with texting and driving, propose a new law against
texting and driving and explain the benefits.

Transition:I’ll begin by telling you about the problem of this topic

Body

(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Need)

I. The first part of the problem is that texting and driving is dangerous and
causes car crashes and possibly even death.

A. Subpoint 1
1. Car crashes
a. It is said that people are “23 times more likely to crash while texting
and driving” (Car Accident Statistics in the U.S., 2019)
b. According to the same source, there are around 6 million
Updated: 20 August 2020 ELC590 Resource Team
crashes per year

B. Subpoint 2
2.Injuries
a. “Nearly 390,000 injuries occur each year from accidents caused
by texting while driving” (Edgar Snyder & Associates, 2021)
b. According to that same source, more than 5700 people are injured
in crashes that involve a distracted driver.

C. Sub-point 3
3.Deaths
a. When we text and drive,we are driving like we are drunk according to
David Drinker, author of the book “Distracted Driving”.Approximately
6000 people lost their lives due to drunk driving last year.

b. Last year, 6798 people lost their lives due to texting and
driving, according to the PDRM Malaysia statistic.

Transition: So what’s the solution?

(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Satisfaction)

II. The solution is that fines should be imposed on those who drive while texting.
A. Subpoint 1
1.Fine money
a. Drivers can be pulled over if caught texting while driving and receive
a RM 300 ticket.For a second offense,they will receive a RM 500
ticket, and a third offense can result in suspended license.

b. Many countries have adopted a similar ban.For example,In the

US,drivers caught texting and driving 3 times automatically lost their
license.Since then, car accidents due to distracted driving has
decreased 63%
B. Subpoint 2
2.Law against texting and driving

a. Drunk driving is dangerous and can be deadly,we can see that texting
and driving is not as if not more dangerous. There laws against drunk
driving,so why aren’t there laws against texting driving?

b. As mentioned, the usage of mobile phones while driving has always

been a compoundable offenses under the Road Traffic Rules 1959 and the
Road Transport Act 1987 like making an illegal U-Turn or double parking

c.But according to PDRM, starting from 6th July 2020, offenses of this
nature under the Rule 17A, LN 166/59 of the traffic rules will no longer be
compoundable and will require you to settle the case in court. They will add
more surveillance camera on the road to detect the unethical drivers.

Transition: So,now that you are aware of the solution,Let’s discuss the benefits.

(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Visualisation)

I. There are several benefits to this solution
A. Subpoint 1
Updated: 20 August 2020 ELC590 Resource Team
1. people will be less likely to engage in distracted driving due to cell phone use.

a.They will more likely to be more careful and scared to used their phone
while driving because it alerts the driver it's legal to use your phone
using a hands-free set or texting while driving, it's recommended that
you stop before you make a call and pull over to a safe location first.

b.There would be less car accidents and deaths. That’s 6798 lives per
year that could be saved.

c.Imagine a world where people’s attention is on the road and not on

their phones.

Conclusion

(Monroe’s Motivated Sequence 🡪 Action)

I. So,In conclusion,Today we’ve discussed the problems with texting and driving,propose a new law
against texting and driving and explain the benefits

II. “It would be good if drivers do understand the negative effects of texting and driving. If my solution
is enacted, you or someone you love won’t be a statistic.

III. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and tear a hole in the heart of
everyone that loves you. Texting and driving has become popular and is increasing the number of
deaths day by day.I ask you all to consider taking action on my solution by understanding the
effects of texting and driving by keeping your eyes more on the road instead of looking at your
phones. The ending result will lead you to no harm in the end.
