The following definitions have been included within this document for clarity
purposes.
AGS
Advanced Groove System. A Victaulic patented wedge shape pipe groove system
that includes both flexible and rigid coupling designs.
A rigid pipe coupling is a mechanical joint which displays weld like behavior with
respect to limiting movement at the pipe joint. The Style W07 rigid coupling
eliminates axial and angular movements similar to a welded or flanged pipe joint.
Mechanical interference between the coupling keys and the grooves located in the
pipe create this axial and angular rigidity. Torsional movements are also
eliminated up to certain torque load values. The ultimate torsional strength of the
Style W07 rigid coupling is dependent upon friction and component tolerances.
See Section 4.4 for design details.
A flexible pipe coupling is a mechanical joint that permits movement at the pipe
joint. The Style W77 flexible coupling is a restrained type mechanical joint which
allows axial, angular and rotational movements. Mechanical clearances between
the coupling keys and the grooves located in the pipe are responsible for these
movements. The Style W77 flexible coupling is a restrained type mechanical joint
which means it is fully capable of resisting the entire pressure thrust load across the
pipe joint and hence no external restraints (i.e. thrust blocks or tie rods) are required.
Note that Style W77 flexible couplings are not capable of transmitting any
significant torsional loadings. See Section 4.4 for design details relating to torsional
loadings.
Operating Allowable Loadings for Victaulic Style W07 and Style W77 couplings
are the allowable coupling joint loads (Section 6.0) available to the piping system
engineer when designing the piping system for conditions which exists in the
installed/commissioned, in-service state.
Operating Loads
Operating Loads consist of any type of loadings placed upon the piping system in
the installed/commissioned, in-service state. Examples of operating loads included
pressure loads, deadweight loads, live loads, and thermal expansion and equipment
movements.
Tensile End Loads are loads where the pipe end is trying to be forced away
from the joint where these forces are parallel to the pipes axis. Examples of
tensile loads are pressure thrust loads, deadweight loads, and live loads.
Compressive End Loads are loads where the pipe end is trying to be forced into the
joint where these forces are parallel to the pipes axis. An example of compressive
loads would be thermal expansion
Rigging Allowable Loadings for Victaulic Style W07 and Style W77 couplings are
the allowable coupling joint loads available to the piping system engineer or
maintenance engineer when transporting, installing or disassembling the piping
system for initial construction or maintenance purposes. For Victaulic Style W07
and Style W77 couplings the Rigging Allowable Loadings shall be the same as the
Operating Allowable Loadings with no internal pressure.
Rigging Loads
Rigging Loads consist of any type of loadings placed upon the piping system or
piping system spool sections in the uninstalled and non-operating condition.
Examples of rigging loads included any loads due to lifting and dragging of pipe
system spool sections.
Sustained based loadings produce primary type stresses which are necessary to
satisfy the simple laws of equilibrium of external and internal forces and moments.
The basic characteristic of a primary stress is that it is not self-limiting. Primary
stresses which considerably exceed the yield point strength will result in immediate
failure. Examples of sustained based loadings include pressure loads, dead weight
loads and live loads.
3.1 Attached to this document are the allowable coupling joint loads for the Style
W07 rigid and Style W77 flexible coupling product lines. For each coupling
size and pipe schedule, two different sets of allowable coupling joint loads
are provided for design usage. One covers tensile axial forces and the other
covers compressive axial forces.
The allowable coupling joint loads are provided in Section 6.0. See Appendix
A for application instructions and examples.
3.2 The operating allowable coupling joint loads shall be used for design
purposes of functional (in-service) piping systems utilizing Style W07 rigid
and Style W77 flexible couplings. Rigging allowable coupling joint loads
shall be the same as the operating allowable coupling joint loads with no
internal pressure.
3.3 The allowable coupling joint loads are shown in both graphical and equation
form. For convenience, the same information has been provided for a 150#
raised face carbon steel (Group 1.1 material) weld neck flange for each pipe
size.
The design guidelines listed below shall be followed when using this document for
piping system design and analysis purposes of piping systems containing the Style
W07 rigid coupling.
4.1 The Style W07 Allowable Coupling Joint Loads shown in Section 6.0 have
been placed in a working form similar to the load interaction equations of a
flange. Some designers refer to this as the “Equivalent” pressure design
approach.
4.2 In the load interaction equations for the Style W07 rigid couplings, (M)
represents the total bending moment placed on the coupling assembly. It does
not include any torsional moment. The ability of Style W07 rigid couplings
to carry torsional loadings will be discussed in more detail in Section 4.4.
C 4.3 In the load interaction equations for the style W07 rigid couplings, (F)
represents the axial mechanical load placed on the coupling assembly. The
load shall be a net total mechanical load in the axial direction of pipe joint.
Note the axial mechanical load can be either positive (tensile) or negative
(compressive). For each case, there will be a separate load equation. The
thrust loads created by internal pressure (P) shall not be combined with
the mechanical axial load (F).
Note: When using any load interaction equation for a Style W07 or Style W77
coupling given in this document, the axial mechanical load (F) shall
always be placed into the load interaction equation as a positive value. It
does not matter whether the actual axial load is a positive (tensile) or a
negative (compressive) value.

4.5 In the load interaction equations for the Style W07 rigid couplings, (M) and
(F) represent the maximum allowable bending moment and maximum
allowable axial mechanical load resulting from the sum of the sustained based
loadings and the displacement/expansion based loadings.
4.6 The provided Style W07 Allowable Coupling Joint Loads (Section 6.0) are
applicable for Victaulic coupling joint assemblies only. A coupling joint
assembly consists of a Style W07 or W77 coupling assembly combined with
any combination of AGS grooved pipe and/or Victaulic AGS piping
components such as fittings, valves, strainers, etc. The Allowable Coupling
Joint Loads (Section 6.0) are not applicable for piping components
manufactured by others or the attached piping joined by the Style W07 or
Style W77 couplings.
4.7 The Style W07 rigid coupling can be modeled within a piping stress analysis
program as a piece of pipe with the same wall thickness as the actual coupled
pipe. A node shall be located at the center of the coupling assembly. The
calculated bending moments and axial forces at this node can be directly
compared to the provided Style W07 Allowable Coupling Joint Loads shown
in Section 6.0. Note the above Sections related to torsional loadings (Section
4.4) and the sum of the sustained based loadings and the
displacement/expansion based loadings (Section 4.5) when performing pipe
stress analyses.
The design guidelines listed below shall be followed when using this document for
piping system design and analysis purposes of piping systems containing the Style
W77 flexible coupling.
5.1 Design Guidelines for Style W77 couplings for applications involving
deflection absorption.
5.1.1 Section 7.0 provides the design allowable coupling joint movements
for the Style W77 coupling product line. For each coupling size, two
values are provided for each particular movement type depending
on whether the groove is rolled or machined. Note that these
movement values do not have to be reduced for deflection
absorption design purposes.
5.1.4 The following table lists the support requirements for the pipes when
Style W77 couplings are used for deflection absorption.
NOTE
Any unsupported pipe spool section, fitting or valve shall be connected on all sides by
supported fittings, valves and/or pipe spools regardless of their length.
5.2 Design Guidelines for Style W77 couplings for applications involving
piping load transfer.
5.2.1 If the Style W77 coupling is used for in-service applications that
involves pipe load transfer (bending moments and axial loads)
across the coupling joint assembly, then the respective Style W77
coupling shall be treated the same as a rigid coupling. In this case,
the Style W07 design guidelines (Section 4.0) and the Style W07
Allowable Coupling Joint Loads (Section 6.0) shall be used for
design purposes for the piping system. No deflection absorption
capability shall be assumed.
5.2.2 The following table lists the support requirements for the pipes when
Style W77 couplings are used for piping load transfer.
NOTE:
Any unsupported pipe spool section, fitting or valve shall be connected on all sides by
supported fittings, valves and/or pipe spools regardless of their length.
5.3 For operating conditions, Style W77 flexible couplings may be designed for
either deflection absorption (Section 5.1) or to transfer piping loads across
the coupling joint (Section 5.2), but not both. If the function of the Style
W77 coupling is deflection absorption, then sufficient movement shall be
designed into the piping system such that the coupling does not “lock-up”
and begin to transfer piping loads (bending moments and axial loads). If
the function of the Style W77 coupling is for piping load transfer, then no
free movement shall be assumed and the coupling joint shall be assumed to
be rigid.

NOTE: For combined axial and angular movements, the following design criteria
shall be satisfied.
The methods shown in this appendix shall be used to determine the Allowable Coupling Joint
Loads for a particular coupling.
Condition #1: System Design Pressure matches one of the predetermined pressures shown
on the graph.
This method can be used when the system design pressure matches one of the predetermined
pressures listed.
Step 1: Find the Operating Allowable Loading graph for the appropriate size coupling in Section
6.0.
Step 2: Find the “Load Interaction Equation” diagram for the particular system design pressure.
Note that there is a Load Interaction Equation diagram for tensile axial loadings and another for
compressive axial loadings.
Step 3: Determine the applied bending moment and axial force for a particular coupling.
Step 4: Substitute the applied bending moment and axial force from Step 3 into the “Load
Interaction Equation”. If the equation remains true the design is acceptable. If the equation
becomes false, the design is unacceptable and the applied loadings have to be reduced.
Example:
Load Interaction Equation from Section 6.0 Tension Loading Diagram (for a pressure of 250 psig):
M + 1.18F ≤ 102820
The “Load Interaction Equation” remains true (100100 ≤ 102820), therefore the applied operating
loadings are acceptable.
This method can be used when the system design pressure does not match one of the predetermined
pressures listed. This method is conservative and simple to apply as compared to the more exact
method (the linear interpolation method) shown in Condition #3 below.
Step 1: Find the Operating Allowable Loading graph for the appropriate size coupling in Section
6.0.
Step 2: Find the “Load Interaction Equation” for the first listed pressure higher than the particular
system design pressure. Note that there is a Load Interaction Equation diagram for tensile axial
loadings and another for compressive axial loadings.
Step 3: Determine the applied bending moment and axial force for a particular coupling.
Step 4: Substitute the applied bending moment and axial force from Step 3 into the “Load
Interaction Equation”. If the equation remains true the design is acceptable. If the equation
becomes false, the design is unacceptable. If the design is shown to be unacceptable, the following
options are available to the designer:
1) Redesign the piping system in order to reduce the magnitude of the applied loadings.
Or
2) Follow the more exact method (the linear interpolation method) shown in Condition #3
below.
Example 1:
Load Interaction Equation from Section 6.0 Tension Loading Diagram (for a pressure of 300 psig):
M + 1.32 F ≤ 99767
The “Load Interaction Equation” remains true (97000 ≤ 99767), therefore the applied operating
loadings are acceptable.
Load Interaction Equation from Section 6.0 Tension Loading Diagram (for a pressure of 300 psig):
M + 1.54 F ≤ 99767
The “Load Interaction Equation” is false (107780 ≤ 99767). Follow the linear interpolation method
shown in Condition #3 below for further analysis or redesign the piping system in order to reduce
the magnitude of the applied operating loadings.
This method can be used when the system design pressure does not match one of the predetermined
pressures listed. This approach provides the largest design operating allowable loadings for a
given system design pressure.
Note: Extrapolation beyond this maximum allowable design pressure value is NOT permitted.
Only linear interpolation between 0 and maximum allowable system pressures is permitted.

Step 2: Find the “Load Interaction Equation” for the bounding pressures (i.e. the pressure less
than and the pressure greater than the particular system design pressure). Note that there is a Load
Interaction Equation diagram for tensile axial loadings and another for compressive axial loadings.
Step 3: Determine the “Load Interaction Equation” for the particular system design pressure.
1) Using the two bounding “Load Interaction Equations”, determine the maximum moment
for each pressure (M*+ and M/+ ). These are calculated by substituting 0 for F in the “Load
Interaction Equations”.
