Introduction:
5S Concept
The following are the ways by which the principles of 5S are applied
in the work place.
1. Sort
This involves distinguishing things or items in your work area
and eliminating the unnecessary items.Items that are to be
eliminated can be identified. This is called “red tagging”.”Items that
have red tags are evaluated whether these will be for disposal or re-
cycling.
2. Staighten or set in order-Concerns the use of efficient and
effective storage methods to arrange items in your work area.It may
be done once the sorting is achieved.
3. Shine or systematic cleaning-Once the clutter has been
arranged and organized, you must fully clean your area. Thus,it is
very important to clean every now and then to maintain order in your
work area.
4. Standardize-Once the first three steps are completed, you may
now standardize the method or procedure used. You may create
visual cues such as signs, checklist that you need for making sure to
successfully implement the cleaning of your work area.
5. Sustain-make sure that you maintain regular sorting,
starightening, and cleanin. You might want to to charge personal
behavior and attitude so that you continue cleaning your work
area. After all,you may use tools for sustaining 5S like
posters,pocket manuals,signs,etc.
