Completing and Recording the Crime Scene Investigation

Taking notes, drawing, and taking pictures are the three most popular ways to

document a crime scene. The crime scene investigator can more easily

recollect events and recognize pieces of evidence in a court of law with the

aid of a thorough record of the crime scene and the actions conducted during

its investigation.

The crime scene specialist's notes, sketches, and photos throughout the

search for evidence also serve as a useful resource for information about the

specifics discovered during the search and the thoroughness of the

procedure.

This lesson's objective is to give learners a general overview of the different

ways to record a crime scene, including note-taking, sketching, and

photography. The purpose of the practical exercise is to provide the

participants the chance to experience collecting notes, taking pictures, and

sketching a rough and detailed picture of a made-up crime scene.

At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

1. Identify at least six (6) essential items of information that should be

included in a crime scene specialist’s notes.

2. Identify at least six (6) pieces of information that should be included on

a crime scene sketch and become familiar with the considerations

involved in crime scene sketching.

3. Identify three (3) methods used in sketching a crime scene.

4. Identify at least two (2) reasons why photographing the crime scene is

important, become familiar with the procedures for photographing the

crime scene, list at least six (6) sequental photographs of the crime

scene, and identify three (3) types of “range” photographs.

5. Identify the importance of the markings in the filed of view and list the

general standards used to review the credibility of the photographs.

6. Identify two prime causes of a lack of sharpness of camera motion and

list the pieces of information which should be recorded in the crime

scene specialist’s notes

7. Identify the importance of film speed and film type.

8. Become familiar with the operations of the camera

9. List the six (6) steps used to load film into a 35 mm camera and the

three (3) steps used to unload film from a 35 mm camera.

10. Become familiar with the terms and the nature of digital photography,

and and explain how the digital image can be altered.

11. Explain the difference between digital and conventional photographs as

legal evidence.
Crime scene examination is complex. How officers approach the crime scene

of a burglary differs from that of a homicide. Indoor, outdoor and conveyance

crime scenes all have unique aspects to consider. Still, these seven steps of a

crime scene investigation remain no matter where or what the crime.' Find out

how these steps apply to any investigation.

IDENTIFY SCENE DIMENSIONS

• Locate the focal point of the scene

• Establish a perimeter large enough to contain relevant evidence

ESTABLISH SECURITY

. Tape around the perimeter

. Depending on the number of people, consider security guards

CREATE A PLAN & COMMUNICATE

. Determine the type of crime that occurred

. Identify any threats to evidence, such as weather

. Consider if additional resources are necessary

. Communicate with your team about how to proceed

CONDUCT PRIMARY SURVEY

. Identify potential evidence

. Capture photographs and take good notes

DOCUMENT AND PROCESS SCENE

. Using the plan from step three, begin processing the scene

. Collect all evidence and keep detailed document

CONDUCT SECONDARY SURVEY

. Conduct another walk through to ensure everything has been processed and

recorded.

RECORD AND PRESERVE EVIDENCE

. Use an inventory log to account for all evidence

. Create thorough descriptions that match photographs taken at the scene

. Follow a clear chain of custody throughout the investigation
