M1: While Task - “A Topic of my Choice”

Directions: Write a composition on a topic of your interest. Your subject of interest


should revolve around the topics within the scope of your enrolled program. Be sure to
observe the presence of the different elements of expository writing in your essay.

A Family of Dentists

An investment is an asset that individuals spend money to generate income or get back
the money they have spent but bigger. Taking dentistry in college is an investment that
my family has provided. It is a six-year course that required a lot of dental materials,
which meant more expenses besides my tuition fee. It is a course that requires both
physical and technical learning that is intertwined together.

However, being in a family of dentists has allowed me to lessen my expense so I could


reuse my family's materials. It is customary for daughters or sons to continue their family's
legacy, especially concerning the occupation. My grandmother was the first dentist in
our household, and my aunt and mother followed. They were not given a choice to
take other courses because my grandmother wished that her dental practice would
not be put to waste. There were advantages and disadvantages to the outcome that
my family had. For instance, my mother learned to love the course and became
successful in her job. On the other hand, my aunt, who had different pursuits, had
difficulty pursuing the course because she was only pressured to do so.

In my case, I was not pressured to take the same course as them. It was a matter of
practicality and lessening our expenses. My household is composed of a single mother
with three siblings, and I am the expected breadwinner. In that matter, my choice of
college was greatly affected by this decision. Taking dentistry was the safest option, for
I had the needed materials and would continue my mother's practice. I had the
advantage of dental resources through materials and knowledge through the
assistance of my mother. Despite this, there are disadvantages to this matter, for they
would often expect that I would provide the best outcomes because they claim
everything is more accessible now. I could quickly excel in the course using technology,
the internet, and materials.

Throughout the years of learning in dentistry, my decision-making in selecting a course


greatly affected my overall performance in college. Because I was not given a choice
but to pursue this career, not the one I wanted. The idea of continuing my family's
legacy was a desire that I wanted my family to have, but I did not want to be the one
to do it. An individual needs to want something to provide efficient results.
