After they were left in the forest Hansel and Gretel found their way back
because Hansel threw stones while they were walking so they just followed
them back. The stepmom was persistent and suggested they left the kids in
the forest again. This time they could not find their way back.
They were in the forest, hungry and scared. They decided to find a shelter and
they came across a house made of cake and bread. They were so hungry that
they just started chewing the house.
An older woman came out of the house and called them to come inside. She
made them delicious meals and put them to bed. The kids didn’t suspect she
was a evil witch that wanted to eat Hansel.
The next morning she locked them up in a barn and made Gretel cook meals
for Hansel so he would get fatter so she could eat him in the end. The witch
checked his weight everyday but Hansel found a way to fool her.
Instead of his finger he would have the witch a little bone to touch so that she
would think he gained no weight. After a month of waiting the witch got tired
and decided to eat him, no matter what his weight was.
She ordered Gretel to get inside the oven and check if the temperature is
alright. The girl knew what her intentions were so she pushed her inside the
oven and she burned to death. Gretel freed Hansel and before they went
home they gathered all of the gold and took it with them.
They decided to go home to their father. He was thrilled about their arrival and
they lived happily ever after. The stepmom died while the kids were held
captive.
Background of story
"Hansel and Gretel" is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812 in
Grimm's Fairy Tales. Hansel and Gretel are a brother and sister abandoned in a forest, where they
fall into the hands of a cannibalistic witch who lives in a house made of gingerbread, cake, and
pastries. The witch intends to fatten the children before eventually eating them, but Gretel outwits
the witch and kills her. The two children then escape with their lives and return home with the witch's
Plot
Plot synopsis Hansel and Gretel are the children of a poor wood cutter . Fearing
starvation, the wood cutter's wife—the children's step-mother—convinces him to lead
the children into the forest, and abandon them there. Hansel and Gretel hear her plan,
and gather white pebbles, to leave themselves a trail home.
Based on the fairy tale by The Brothers Grimm. Hansel and Gretel are abandoned
after the famine strike in the village and where Hansel and Gretel are later trapped
in the deceptively decorated house of the witch Griselda who wishes to fatten Hansel so
that he may be baked into a delicious gingerbread treat.
Conflict
Another major conflict is Hansel and Gretel’s father finds it hard to cope with the
decision of leaving his children in the woods alone. This man versus self conflict keeps
the reader interested and is heartbreaking because the father of Hansel and Gretel finds
it hard to live with himself after he leaves his children alone in the woods.
In the beginning when Hansel and Gretel are left in the woods for the first
time, conflict arises. As stated, in another post I find the abandonment of this children
horrible and somewhat terrifying. Well at least it would be terrifying to children.
theme
The story of Hansel and Gretel is more than just two children falling prey to a wicked
witch. The story examines themes such as family life and marriage, the children's
coming of age into adulthood, and greed.
The story of Hansel and Gretel was a result of the great tragedy, a great famine that
struck Europe in 1314 when mothers abandoned their children and in some cases ate
them.
