Cell Analogy Assignment

This document provides instructions for a cell analogy assignment. Students must: 1. Compare an animal or plant cell to another object or concept by creating an original cell analogy. 2. Choose 10 organelles from a provided list and explain how each organelle's function relates to and compares with a part of their analogy. 3. Create a 2D or 3D physical, drawn, or digital model that visually represents their cell analogy and labels each organelle and its corresponding part in the analogy.

Cell Analogy Assignment

You are required to design and create a visual that compares a cell and the functions of its
organelles to an object, structure, organization, activity or concept in the real world. You must
create an innovative cell analogy.

Assignment:
1. Choose a type of cell (animal or plant), and something to compare this cell to.
2. Choose 10 organelles from the list and create an analogy for each one. The analogy for
each cell should “match” or parallel the actual cell part function and make sense within
your analogy as a whole. A good project will help you establish your central image of the
cell and its parts which function together to enable the cell to grow, acquire energy,
make wastes, make proteins, etc.

Components:

The components of your project must be as follows:

1. 2- or 3-dimensional model of your analogy, made with materials of your choosing that
you must obtain yourself. You may build a physical model, draw by hand, or create a
computer model or presentation.
2. 10 labels that adequately introduce each part of your analogy, its function within your
analogy, and how it compares to a part of the eukaryotic cell. The language you use
between the two parts of your label should be parallel.
a. Example; The nucleus of the cell is represented by the principal, because as the
principal directs the school, the nucleus directs the activities in the cell.
b. Example; The principle represents the nucleus because the principle directs the
activities of the school, and the nucleus directs the activities of the cell

Organelles to choose from

● cell membrane
● cytoplasm
● chloroplasts
● golgi apparatus
● rough endoplasmic reticulum
● smooth endoplasmic reticulum
● ribosomes
● cytoskeleton
● nucleus
● mitochondria
● lysosome
● vacuole
● cell wall

Note: You can work in pairs (you and one other person) or by yourself
Special Instructions
Your model should include the following:
1. an original and creative title.
2. an introductory statement such as:
a. "A cell is like a ___________because ______________ ."
3. a list or chart of least 10 statements which name the 10 organelles chosen for your
comparison and state how the functions of these organelles relate to your comparison.
4. an attractive, colorful set of illustrations to illustrate your analogy. Each of the organelle
addressed in your analogy should be represented and labeled, on a picture of your
system.
5. your name and members of your group’s names.
6. neat and attractive presentation.

Marks

/20 10 organelles and how the function of each on relates to the function of the symbol in
your analogy
/10 Visual – each of the organelles addressed in the analogy is represented and labeled. The
visual model is clear and well done
