COURSE DESCRIPTION (242210)
Microsoft Office 1 is a year-long technology course that teaches the core competencies of Microsoft Word. All
students will be provided with the opportunity to earn their Microsoft Word certification. This certification is a
valuable, professional credential which includes globally recognized standards for digital literacy and desktop
computing proficiency. When students earn their Microsoft Word certification, they will receive a .5
Occupational credit (CR) on their transcript at the end of their 9th grade year. (Note: CR grades do not impact
a students’ GPA.) Should you elect to Opt-Out of this additional credit, please contact your child’s counselor.
When students finish their MS Word certification, they will be given the opportunity to work towards their MS
PowerPoint and MS Excel certifications. If students earn both the MS PowerPoint and MS Excel
certifications, they will earn an additional .5 high school credit.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS


• Why are Microsoft Office fundamentals important in our digital world?
• How can document formatting and presentation skills help manage time and organize thoughts to
produce professional written work and oral presentations?

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS/MATERIALS
Students will be guided and prepared for each certification exam using Jasperactive and G’Metrix. Once
students are ready for the exam, it will be administered on-line using Certiport/Compass.
• Jasperactive: an online application used for certification preparation through self-guided practice lessons
• G’Metrix: an online application used to practice taking the MS Office certification exam(s)

OBJECTIVES GRADING
You will learn these fundamental Microsoft Word skills: Course grades will be based on:
• 1: Manage Documents • 75% Formative: Coursework
• 2: Insert and Format Text, Paragraphs, and Sections (Jasperactive & G’Metrix)
• 3: Manage Tables and Lists • 25% Summative: Microsoft Word
• 4: Create and Manage References Certification Exam
• 5: Insert and Format Graphic Elements
• 6: Manage Document Collaboration Grade Scale – Must finish all course
work (Formative) with the following
ASSESSMENT certification exam Score (Summative):
Microsoft Office certification exams are administered on-line • A 700 or above (Certified)
through Certiport/Compass. Microsoft requires a minimum • A- 650-699
proficiency level of 70% to pass the exam and earn certification. • B+ 600-649
• B 550-599
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS • B- 500-549
Students are expected to exhibit respectful behavior to staff and • C+ 450-499
