• D)ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.

1)Compare a globe and a map. List the advantages and
disadvantages of each.
Ans) A globe is a round model of the Earth. A map is a
representation of the Earth’s surface or a part of it, on a
flat surface.
Advantages of a globe
a)It represents the Earth in a simple and accurate way.
b)It shows the shape, size and location of the continents
and water bodies.
c)It helps us to understand the Earth’s movements on its
axis and around the sun.
Disadvantages of a globe
a)It shows only one side of the Earth at one time.
b)It cannot be carried easily from place to place.
c)The details are not shown on a globe because of space
limitation.
Advantages of a map
a)They can be drawn on a flat surface to show
continents, cities, neighbourhoods and even market
places.
b)They show more details, especially when a small area is
being mapped.
c)They can easily be carried from place to place.
Disadvantages of a map
a)The Earth is shaped like a sphere, hence, the shape of

accurately on paper as paper has a flat surface.
b)They do not help us to understand the movements of
Earth.

Ans) The four main directions are North , South , East and

north lies. All maps show directions in this way.

map.

the help of an example.
Ans) Distances on the map are measured with the help
of a linear scale. This scale is shown as a straight line,
divided into units of length. When the distance between
two places ( for example, Delhi and Kolkata ) has to be
measured , the procedure is as follows:
a)Take a political map of India.
b)Take a thread or strip of paper.
c)Measure the distance between Delhi and Kolkata using
the thread or strip of paper on the map.
d)While measuring , pull the thread straight form Delhi to
Kolkata.
e)This gives you the distance between the two cities .
f) Place the thread on the linear scale and measure the
distance.
