Gr8 ICT Term1 Tasksheet1 Answer Key

1. The document provides information about networking concepts including different network devices like switches, bridges, and modems. It describes star, bus, and ring topologies and explains their advantages. 2. Limitations of wireless access points include limited effective connection distance, obstacles reducing connectivity, positioning of the access point, interference from other wireless devices, and weather affecting signal transmission. 3. A star topology is best for security since the central hub monitors all traffic. A bus topology is suitable for a temporary network since devices can easily and quickly connect. A ring topology avoids collisions by having data packets travel in one direction between devices.

TASKSHEET - 1

Name: …………………………...……… Grade: 8 Div:.…… Roll no: ………..

Topic: Networking Concepts Date: ……. / …….. / ……………
Subject: Information & Communication Technology

1. A variety of network devices can be used to connect computers together.

Complete the following sentences using the most appropriate network device from the list.
Your answers must be different in each case.

an access point a bridge a hub

a modem a network interface card a switch

A device used to connect a Local Area Network (LAN) to another LAN that uses the same

protocol is called a bridge

A device used to convert a computer’s digital signal to an analogue signal for

communication is called a modem

A device that connects a number of other devices and sends data to one specific device

only is a switch

An item of hardware in a computer that allows a device to connect to a network is

a network interface card.

2. Describe the limitations of using wireless access points (WAPs) to connect portable
computers to a cabled network.

 Effective connection distance is limited

 Obstacles in between WAP and device can (further) reduce connectivity
 Affected by positioning of WAP/height above ground/type of antenna in use
 Affected by the presence of other wireless devices/mobile (cell) phones
 transmitting on the same/close frequencies
 Weather conditions affect the transmission of wireless signals
 Number of devices that can connect to a WAP is limited

3. There are many different types of network topology. State the most suitable topology for
the following and explain how the topology will meet the requirement.

(i) Offers good security

Topology

Star Topology

Explanation

Since this topology is controlled by central computer or hub, it is easier to keep

track of incoming and outgoing data. Also, as endpoints operate independently of

each other; if a node is attacked, the rest of your network still remains intact.

(ii) Network needed for a short time (temporary)

Topology

Bus Topology

Explanation

It is easy to connect a computer or other device to the network. The new device

connected gets access to the network immediately. It is the best option for a

temporary network connection that can be set up quickly.

(iii) Avoids collisions

Topology

Ring Topology

Explanation

Each packet of data on the network travels in one direction and each device

receives each packet in turn until the destination device receives it.

4. A Local Area Network (LAN) consists of three computers, one server and a switch. The LAN uses a
star topology.

(a) Complete the following diagram to show how the computers, the server and the switch could
be connected:

(b) There are four statements in the following table. For each statement, place a tick (✓) in the
appropriate column to indicate whether it is true or false.

Statement True False

The server can send packets to Computer B and Computer C at

True
the same time.

The network software on each computer needs to include

False
collision detection and avoidance.

Computer B can read a packet sent from the server to Computer

False
C.

Computer A can send a packet to Computer B and at the same

True
time the server can be sending a packet to Computer C

(c) The LAN shown in part (a) will be connected to the Internet.

(i) A router will be attached to one of the devices on the LAN.

State the device used. Give a reason for your choice.

Device Switch

Reason all computer are connected to switch, hence switch is forming internal

network. When router gets connected to switch all computer connected to switch

will be able to use internet.

(ii) Explain why a router is required.

A router is a device that connects two different types of networks with each other

example, a LAN with a WAN. Router transmits the messages on the network from

source computer to destination computer.

(ii) After the router has been connected, Computer A sends several packets to an internet web
server.

Explain how the packets are transmitted from the router to the web server.

Router holds the list of all IP address of the computer in its network and also the IP

address of its adjacent routers. So it provides the best suitable route to deliver the

message from source computer to destination computer.

5. State true or false for most accurate statements regarding peer-to-peer and client-server networks.

Statements True False

False
Peer-to-peer networks must have a central server.

Client-server networks generally offer greater security than peer-to- True

peer networks.
Peer-to-peer networks can support millions of users with no loss of False
performance.
The server will determine which users can access the files on a client- True
server network.
In a client-server network each client functions both as a client and as a False
server simultaneously.
If one computer crashes it has no effect on the other users in a client- True
server network.
A client-server network is cheaper to set up than a peer-to-peer False
network.
Peer-to-peer networks always require an employee to manage the False
network.
In a peer-to-peer network only one computer is allowed to use the False
printer.
In a peer-to-peer network computers can communicate and share files True
with every other computer on the network.
