Eee206 DC Motor p1b

This document describes an experiment to demonstrate speed control of a DC shunt motor using different methods and to observe the existence of back EMF. The methods of speed control tested are flux control by varying field current using a field rheostat, armature current control using an armature rheostat, and voltage control by varying the applied DC voltage. The experiment involves taking speed measurements corresponding to different field currents, armature currents and voltages. A test is also done to prove the existence of back EMF by observing the fading of a lamp when the motor switch is opened while the motor is running.

SPEED CONTROL OF A DC SHUNT MOTOR AND OBSERVATION

OF THE EXISTANCE OF BACK EMF.

INTRODUCTION:
Speed of a dc motor may be given by the following equation

N= K (V-IaRa)/ r.p.m. -------------------------(1)

Where
V= applied terminal voltage
Ia=armature current
Ra=armature resistance
= field flux
K= a constant which depends on the winding and construction
of the motor

Therefore speed of a dc shunt motor can be varied by the following methods:

1) Flux Control method:

Equation (1) describes an inverse relationship between speed and flux. So by
decreasing the field flux of a dc shunt motor, by inserting resistance in the field
circuit, speed can be increased above the base speed.

2) Armature rheostat method:

In this method, armature current Ia is varied by inserting a rheostat in the armature
circuit and speed can be decreased below base speed.

3) Voltage Control method:

By applying a variable dc voltage across the motor terminals, speed can be varied
below or above the base speed

In this experiment all of these methods of speed control will be accomplished. In

excess, the existence of back EMF will also be observed through a simple test.

APPARATUS:

1. Two DC ammeters
2. Two rheostats
3. One DC voltmeter
4. DC motor
EXPERIMENTAL SET-UP:

S Field
rheostat

Armature
DC Volt rheostat
V
0 - 240 V A

lamp Field

Armature

PROCEDURE:

1. Complete the connections as shown in the figure. Apply 240V dc across the
terminals. Keep the field rheostat at minimum resistance position. Start the motor.
Observe the high deflection of the armature circuit ammeter.

2. Proof of the existence of back EMF:

When the motor is running, the lamp will glow steadily. Now, open the switch S.
Had there be no back emf, the light would instantaneously turn off. However, due
to the presence of back emf the light will gradually fade out as the motor coasts
down
(Why does the motor stop running when the switch is open?)

3. Field Control Method:

Apply 240V dc across the motor terminals. Keep the armature rheostat and field
rheostat to the minimum positions. Start the motor. Vary the field rheostat in step
and measure If and speed N. Take 10 sets of reading at stable stepping.

4. Armature rheostat Method:

Keeping the supply voltage V and field rheostat fixed, vary the armature rheostat
insteps. Take readings of Ia and N. Take at least 10 sets of readings at suitable
steeping.

5. Voltage Control Method:

Apply 240V dc across the motor terminals. Keep the armature rheostat and field
rheostat to the minimum positions. Start the motor. Decrease the supply voltage V
in step and measure speed N. Take 10 sets of reading at stable stepping.
REPORTS:

1) Plot N vs. If, Ia and V curves on the same graph paper.

2) Comment on the merits and demerits of various methods of speed control of a
dc shunt motor.
3) Why is a starter required to start a dc shunt motor?
4) Draw an elaborate view of a four-point starter and briefly mention its
functions.
5) How do you get a proof of the existence of back emf in step 2 of the
procedure?
