A MOBILE APPLICATION Proposal

This document proposes developing a mobile application for Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital to better manage patient and hospital information. The application would allow patients access to their health records, reports, and appointment scheduling from their mobile devices for more convenience. It would also help the hospital digitally manage staff, service details, and appointments. The proposal outlines collecting requirements through research and interviews, developing workflows, and implementing the application over 3 months with testing and documentation. The expected outcomes are a mobile system providing detailed hospital and patient information for improved healthcare access and delivery.

1. Introduction
A hospital is a health care institution providing treatment to the patient with specialized
staff and equipment which occupies an important role in society. Hospitals deal with the
life and health of their patients. Good medical care relies on well-trained doctors and
nurses and on high quality facilities and equipment.

A Mobile application for hospital is an application software designed to run on a mobile

device to support healthier living, help manage a long-term condition and to provide initial
advice on an emerging medical problem. Recent technological advancement in mobile
communication and rule based expert system together enable new types of healthcare
systems.

Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital (NOH) was established in the premises of the Nepal Disabled
Association (NDA) at the Khagendra New Life Centre in Jorpati in Kathmandu in August
1998.Its sole intention has been to provide quality orthopaedic care, at an affordable price,
of which most Nepalese have been deprived. This hospital was conceived as a World
Community Service Project of various Rotary Clubs of District 7090 of USA and Canada,
Rotary Club of Patan and Nepal Disabled Association as local partners (Nepal Orthopaedic
Hospital, 2011).

In this paper I proposed an idea of a mobile application for Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital.
This is a management system for hospital that records the information about patients,
doctors and the service provided by the hospital. This application helps user/patients to
provide better connectivity with the doctors and hospital. With this application patients can
have all the data on their smartphones, having all the data on their smartphones, they can
observe the dynamics of being on the mend, report doctors and nurses about changes in
stage and so on.

2. Problem Statement
In order to address the dynamism of the technology and the requirement of the
stakeholders Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital has already developed a well-functioning web
application that provide information about hospital, its services and doctors but it lacks in
providing information about the patients’ health details. To store the information of the
patient’s desktop based application is used in which only the administrator have access.
Due to this patients cannot have easy access on their own reports and has to face
inconvenience in carrying his big reports file in every hospital visit. Similarly, hospital is
still dealing with manual appointment management process due to which patients has to
wait for long period. Hence to overcome all these inconvenience a Mobile Application for
hospital is purposed in this paper. Due to the widespread adoption and use of mobile
technologies people will feel convenience to have an innovative ways to improve health
care facilities in their fingertip. With this application patients can register and have all their
health details and reports on their mobile phone and can experiences the better delivery of
health care.

3. Literature Review
Mobile integrated hospital information system is a system that uses a mobile phone-based
software application to allow health workers to capture, store, and process, transmit, and
access patient records (Opolinto, 2018).

There are 3, 25,000 healthcare apps available worldwide and Android is leading the way
forward in Health platform. Yet another survey from Accenture Consultants point out that
the download in the number of healthcare app has doubled in the past couple of years
(Mind Inventory, 2018).

In 2011, Apple created the “Apps for Healthcare Professionals” section within the medical
category of the iTunes Appstore, a unique feature among mobile app marketplaces. In
2013, this section was further divided into subcategories including: reference, medical
education, EMR and patient monitoring, nursing, imaging, patient education, and personal
care (Ventola, 2014).

Among different mobile application, MobiCare is an advanced mobile application for

hospitals that provides mobility and convenience. Mobicare incorporates most common
and widly used aspects of healthcare information systems into a portable and mobile
friendly user interface. The design and user interface takes in to consideration the influence
of smart phones. The idea behind mobiCare is to provide convenience and health tracking
tools by the smart and effective usage of mobile technology (Mobicare, 2016).

4. Objective of Study
4.1 General Objectives

The basic purpose of this study is to design a mobile based application for the hospital that
records all the information about the hospital, doctors, its services and the patients.

4.2 Specific Objectives

The specific objective of this study are mentioned below:
 To develop a system that allows patients to have full access to view their health
details, details of doctors and past treatment history.
 To manage records of the services provided by the hospital.
 To view the past appointments and reserve an appointment for treatment.
5. Methodology
This section describes the methodology used for gathering required information, and
the design of the application. It gives insights into the technical aspects of developing a
proposed application and discusses typical questions related to the medical device
directives. Online Publication research, direct interviews with questionnaire and work
process observation are the some of the methods to gather the information required.

5.1 Data Collection

5.1.1 Online publication research

Various reports (Opolinto, 2018), articles (Ventolo, 2014), and other related websites
(Mobicare, 2016), (Mind Inventory, 2018) regarding Hospital Management System
were reviewed for preparing this report. Analysis of these articles, and websites,
important information about what a hospital management system does, how it is
important to a hospital to develop a mobile application and how this system enhance
efficiency were gathered.

5.1.2 Direct interviews

This research is based on interview taken in Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital. A direct
personal interview with Ms.Rolina Karki, Senior nurse of Nepal Orthopaedic Hospital,
was conducted based on questionnaire to gather information.

Questionnaire:

1. Does the organization use any kind of application system to manage hospital or
not?
2. What kind of software is being used in the organization?
3. Before implementing software, what was used to record information of hospital?
4. What are the drawbacks of the manual record keeping system?
5. How does hospital provide treatment records to the patients?
6. How the schedules and appointments are managed?
7. Does the patients satisfied with the system used by hospital?
5.1.3 Work process observation
With the close observation and analysis of the work process of the hospital related to
scheduling of the staffs, records of the patients, service being provided etc. different
information’s were gathered. These information provide various ideas about the working
process of firm, its working environment, how the records of patients are stored and how
the schedule is managed.

6. Requirement Analysis
Requirements analysis encompasses those tasks that go into determining the needs or
conditions to meet for a new or altered product or project. Some of the functional
Requirements of the purposed system are:

 For User
a. If the user is new he/she have to create an account and log in to the application
where as if a user already have an account he/she can directly log in to the
application.
b. After login user can view their health information, view service detail and make an
appointment for treatment from desired doctor, view an appointment, cancel an
appointment and view hospital’s information.
 For Hospital
a. Hospital can create their account, login to their system, add, edit or remove staff
records, service details, view schedule, manage appointment, add and update
patient’s details about the treatment and the report of the treatment.

8. Expected Outcomes
Every project is designed to obtain certain goals and some future outcomes. Some of the
expected outcomes of the proposed systems are:

 A mobile application with the detail information about the hospital, its services and
the information about the doctors, nurses and patients.
 An application that provide full access to the user for viewing their health details,
treatment reports, view services of the hospital, view, book or cancel appointment.
 An application that helps hospital to manage their work schedule, employee records
and service detail.
