Developing a staff training program

Standard Operation Procedure

Department: Human resources

Purpose: Identify and understand customer needs, requires minimal training. For that
reason, employee development should be a shared responsibility of management and the
individual employee. To develop a strong training culture, all parties must understand the
benefits of good training.

Frequency: When needed

Procedure:

1) Assess the training needs.

2) Identify the staff for the training.

3) Define the goals of the programs before you commit.

4) Create or outsource the creation of the content for the training.

5) Communicate the training program.

6) Implement the training modules in the order of importance.

7) Encourage the staff to develop their individual development plans.

8) Assess employee training programs.

Definition/Explanation:

I. Training needs: To implement the right training program to the employees, it is

necessary to identify employee training needs. First, determine the needs of your
company by identifying weak areas where training would prove beneficial then, en-
gage the staff in the process. It will help you to make sure the training is suitable
and that they want to participate.

II. Staff: Plan the training by identifying individuals or groups likely to benefit from it.
Also, make training a part of every new employee orientation going forward.

III. Goals: They must be clear and measurable.

IV. Content: Content could be in many different forms. Professional training organiza-
tions use slide-shows, white boards and videos in addition to written material, for
instance.

V. Communicate: Communicate the training program to all staff so they are aware of
what is happening in the business.

VI. Importance: For instance, if sales techniques or customer service are major is-
sues, roll out those training sessions first.

VII. Development plan: Encourage your staff to design their own learning path. Let
them determine the knowledge, skills and abilities to be learned. They will be more
motivated if they are involved in the whole process.

VIII. Asses: Review and redesign your educational programs if they don’t meet your in-
tended objectives.
