INTRODUCTION

A vacuum cleaner is a home appliance that uses suction to clean carpets, floors,

and other surfaces, according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary (2016). You may define

what it means to be clean by using this tool, which is also known as a "Vacuum

sweeper." Each day, a number of people carry out the tedious task of cleaning the

house. Hence, a revolution in science and technology is needed, one that could

immediately help with the routine work that humans do every day. Moreover, cleaning is

a tedious and boring task that is devalued for its expertise and respect. In many public

service businesses, cleaning should be more appealing even if it will soon be required

because people do not want to spend a lot of time on manual labor.

The debris collecting device has a compaction mechanism that collects debris

captured in the toroidal vortex flow and deposits it in a specified chamber without

requiring constant fluid intake and exhaust. (Kensington 2004) Backpack vacuums have

experience numerous significant advancement over the years, increasing overall user

comfort by reducing the size and weight of the machine and developing harmness

specifically for the female workforce. (Rosenzweig Weltin, 2006) According to studies,

using this type of vacuum can significantly cut down on the time and labor required to

vacuum. (Fried, R 2005)

According to Qiuzon (n.d) research from Cathal O’Connell (2016), energy is that

it has the ability to produce work, but it also has the ability to generate movement. He
claimed that because it is an abstract concept and a generic idea of something that is

crucial to all scientific activities, energy is challenging to define. Energy comes in a

variety of forms, including thermal, electrical, mechanical, and physical energy. An

energy that is in motion or has the potential to be in motion is said to have mechanical

energy. Any item with this capability has access to mechanical energy (Henderson,

2018). Additionally, mechanical energy is a type of energy that an object has as a result

of its location or motion. Since mechanical energy and work are proportional, nearly

everything possesses mechanical energy, which also means that virtually every object

has the capacity to perform work. Work is defined as the movement of an item when a

force is applied to it. Kinetic energy is energy that is in motion, while potential energy is

energy that is at rest but has the capacity to do work. It can only be moved from one

item to another; it cannot be created or destroyed. (Madaan, 2018).

The cost of a vacuum cleaner is one of the primary causes of complaints. Some

people find that the cost of purchasing a vacuum cleaner makes it unaffordable for them

to do so. Additionally, folks who are whining about their electricity bill when they use a

vacuum cleaner will only see an increase in their account since the vacuum uses the

power of their home, forcing them to pay more for electricity. The more powerful the

vacuum cleaner, the more it can consume electricity, depending on how great the

wattage is (O'Neill, 2016), but also because of the revolution in technology, there are

existing vacuum cleaners being proposed by many researchers. It includes vacuum

cleaners that are low-cost and use batteries, which makes them cheaper. Some are

using solar panels to conserve energy, which is also quite expensive.

Everyone found vacuums to be helped while cleaning their rooms or homes.

There are various modern variations on vacuum. Additionally, some people decide to

improvise in order to have their own version of it and save money. However, people

who improvise also use electricity to thoroughly clean a room.

Vacuum cleaners have the ability to release significant amounts of particles, both

in their exhaust air and through the resuspension of collected dust. Although there is

evidence to suggest that these emissions may contribute to the transmission of

illnesses and trigger allergic reactions indoors, it is unknown how much of them there

are, how unpredictable they are, and what kinds of microbes they contain. ( Veillette,

Marc; Knibbs, Luke D.; Pelletier, Ariane; Charlebois, Remi; Blais Lecours, Pascale; He,

Congrong; Morawska, Lidia, 2013)

Meanwhile, the Upcycling Plastic Bottles for a Sustainable Vacuum Cleaner is

very helpful to our environment. Plastic bottles have different sizes; like 50 ml, 100 ml,

150 ml, 200ml, 250 ml, 380 ml, 420 ml, 500 ml, 568 ml, 750 ml, and 1 liter. Because of

the facts presented above, the researcher aimed to seek alternative way in making a

sustainable Vacuum Cleaner. The researchers wanted to find a way to make the wasted

plastic bottles useful. The researchers wanted to help the environment by using the

unlimited supply of wasted plastic bottles as the key ingredient of the improvised

vacuum cleaner. To have a vacuum that will not take days to make.
Objective of the study

The overall purpose of this study is to:

1. To be able to make a DIY or homemade vacuum out of recycled materials

that can be found at homes.

2. To be able to help in acquiring a cost efficient and affordable appliance

for the people.

3. Lessen the dust in rooms, save electricity, recycle plastic bottles, and

save money by using cheap and recyclable materials.

Significance of the study

This study will provide prior knowledge to the household, to the housekeeper and

also to the future researchers.

To Household:

This study will be important to householders since they can have cleaning

equipment that only uses mechanical energy as a source of power, which means that
their electric bill will go down and they won't need to buy electricity from an electric

company to power their vacuum.

To the house keeper:

The results of this study will allow housekeepers to use wireless cleaning

equipment, which will solve the problem of a wire's limits during cleaning sessions. The

housekeeper won't have any trouble cleaning because of the wire's length.

To the future researcher:

It will make it easier for them to come up with fresh concepts for further cutting-

edge cleaning tools and will enhance the cleaning process.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

The researcher will look at the effectiveness of upcycling plastic bottle for a

sustainable vacuum cleaner in the household. There will be the respondents of this

research are the households, house keepers, or people who can be one of the

beneficiaries of the product, it’s because the main reason is they’re the one who are

using the product to clean their rooms and houses.

Operational Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study, the following terminology are defined

and organized according to their conceptual and operational definitions.

Alternative – one or more available possibilities.

Beneficiary - a person who derives advantage from something.

Improvised - self-made/ self-created

Mechanical Energy – energy that possessed by an object due to its position.

Mechanical energy can be either kinetic energy (energy in motion) or potential energy

(energy at rest/stored).

Vacuum Cleaner - a household appliance for cleaning floors, carpets, upholstery, etc.

by suction.

Resuspension - the removal of deposited material from the ground to the atmosphere

as a result of wind, traffic, soil cultivation, and other activities.

Conceptual Framework

The figure below shows the conceptual framework of the study. Its input is the

materials needed in the experiment. The process is the actions or steps taken in order

to achieve a particular end, and the output is where you produce the outcome and that

is the Improvised Vacuum Cleaner.

This section of the study provides details on the supplies utilized for the

experiment, as well as the steps used to carry it out.

Materials and Instruments

The sources of information used by the researchers in this study are 1.5 L

Plastic Bottle, Cutter/ knife, Dynamo, Soda Can (for the fan), Batteries, Switch, Cord

/wire, Tape, Voltage regulator, and Hose.

Making of Vacuum Cleaner

1. Cutting the Plastic Bottle

-Take the empty plastic bottle and cut into half.

2. Making the Fan

 Sheet From the deo bottle is taken and place the previously cut portion of

the bottle and sketch the round bottom opening with the marker and the

cut the marked portion you will get a round metal portion

 .Then take a scale and draw 4 lines as shown in figure it gives a middle

point and 8 wings portions to cut them later

 Take a hammer and nail and at middle portion of round sheet place the

nail and make a hole

 Then basing on the lines drawn cut the wings of fan leaving some round

area near the middle hole we will get the wings

 Twist the wings means all the wings in the same direction as shown in

figure.

 Your fan is ready

3. Attaching the Fan to Motor

 Take the 12 v DC toy motor and to the rotating rod attach the ball point

pen refill and press it to tighten.

 Cut the excess portion of refill and then take the fan previously prepared

and fix it to the refill placing the refill portion into the hole of the fan.

 Apply hot glue for extra strength around the joint.

 Fan is ready

4. Placing the Fan in the Plastic Bottle Bottom Portion

 In the bottom portion make a round portion with the marker that holds the

motor at the center

 Using the soldering rod or else any heated needle make holes on the

entire bottom of the bottle that is useful for letting suction air outside

 then make a big hole on the trace to fix the motor after placing the hole

apply hot glue and fix the motor in the hole placing fan side inside the

bottle and connecting part of motor outside.

5. Fixing Bottle and Attaching Using Plaster

-Take the net or mosquito net and place the top portion of plastic bottle

and place it on the net or mosquito net and trace round slightly more than

bottle and using double sided tape fix it to the bottle and fix the two

portions of the bottle using a tape.

6. Making Suction Pipe

-Take the bottle cap and make a hole and place a wire pipe that bends in

any direction and fix it to the cap and on the other end fix the small plastic

bottle and fix it to the bottle.

7. Final Steps
-For decoration purpose i added any color of paper or any paint and a

handle using the card board sheet and connect the motor with wires and

switch on vacuum cleaner.
