CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 Introduction
Considering our study relates to the impact of team sports regarding support to the volleyball
players, we identified different studies that will help explicate further.
According to Carlson, B., & Engerbretsen, L. (2014). “Injury prevention in sports: An
overview of systematic reviews” reveals increasing evidence exists for all age groups, that
physical activity is more important in both prevention and treatment of some of the most sizeable
conditions of our time, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension, obesity,
osteoporosis, and depression. Although overall population levels of physical activity is a general
concern, increasing levels of leisure time, physical activity, and sports participation have been
reported in some population groups. Injuries are virtually the sole drawback of exercise, but may
be a common consequence of physical activity and have been shown to pose substantial
problems. Nonetheless, in the study of Al-shehri, M. A., & Alshamrani, R. A. (2021). “The
effects of Volleyball Training on Physical Fitness and Skills for University Students in Saudi
Arabia.” It reveals that volleyball has been popularized to a very high degree in China’s major
universities, and college students have a strong interest in participating in volleyball events.
Therefore, the development of volleyball in colleges and universities has a certain scale. In
addition, relevant courses are also constantly improving. Compared with other sports, volleyball
not only puts forward certain requirements for college students’ sports ability, but also has
certain requirements on the skill level. Therefore, participating in volleyball is great help to
improve the overall quality for college students.
The study conducted by Yoon, J., & Lee, Y. S. (2023). “Effects of Volleyball Training on
Physical and Psychological Variables in Adolescent Students’ states that the ability to maintain
balance, either dynamic, is a great importance for performing everyday activities, as well as for
the development and optimization of an athlete’s basic motor skills. It is also one of the most
important skills that protect from injury. It has been established that highly trained athletes show
more accurate postural control than sedentary subjects, and differences in postural control
become noticeable between trained and untrained adolescents. However, in the study of
Saavedra, J. M., Escobar, R., Vera, M., & Cossio-Bolanos, M. (2019). “The impact of a School
based program of dance and volleyball on the physical fitness of adolescents” reveals that the
study evaluated the impact of a school-based program that included volleyball on physical fitness
in adolescents. It found that the program led to significant improvements in physical fitness,
particularly in areas such as agility and muscular endurance.

2.2 Prior Research

In this study, Martin-Albo, J. L., Navarro, J. G., & Grijalvo, F. (2017). Stated that “Effects
of a mindfulness-based intervention on psychological burnout and perceived stress among sport
coaches” sought to examine the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention helped reduce levels
of psychological burnout and perceived stress, thus benefiting both the coaches and the players.
Compared to the study of Bohman, T., Hassmen, P., & Lunqvist, C. (2018).
“The benefits of playing volleyball for half a year: Effects on Horizontal jumping power in boys
and girls aged 10-16 years”. It focuses on the investigation of the effect of half a year of
volleyball training on horizontal jumping power in boys and girls aged 10-16 years. It found out
that volleyball training can improve jumping power in both boys and girls which is a valuable
physical attribute in many sports.
According to the study conducted by Geiger, C. M., & Teitelbaum, J. (2019). “Adolescents
Girls’ Perceptions and Experiences playing Volleyball: Implications for Sport Oppurtunities”
states that this study explored adolescent girls’ perceptions and experiences playing volleyball,
specially with regards to social support and confidence. Its findings suggest that volleyball can
help enhance social connections and self-confidence among adolescents girls. Meanwhile, in the
study of Eberhardt, M., & Ommundsen, Y. (2019). “The Relationship Between Team Sports
Participation and Physical Activity Among Adolescents Girls: A comparison of Three Euro”
affirms that this examines the relationship between team sports participation and physical
activity among adolescent girls in three European countries. It found that participation in team
sports is positively associated with overall physical activity and may be a gateway to creating
lifelong healthy habits.
The study conducted by Roberts, G. C., & Conroy, D. E. (2007). “Understanding the
dynamics of motivation in sports and physical activity: An achievement goal interpretation’
reveals that the handbook of sport psychology provides an overview of the role of motivation in
sports and physical activities. It highlights how different achievements goal and impact players
motivation and how factors such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness can influence that
motivation. However, in the study conducted by Lihua, Y., & Tzu-Wei, F. (2020). “The
Relationship Between Physical Fitness, Body Mass Index and Learning Achievement in
Elementary School Students.” This states that a gradual increase in sedentary lifestyles along
with the increased consumption of a modern, hypercaloric diet has resulted in a substantial
increase in the number of those classified as overweight or obese in china. The prevalence of
overweight and obesity has become a key public health. However, it is important to be cautious
when interpreting the literature as the majority of studies apply cross-sectional data to assess and
subjectively compare the relationship between physical fitness and being overweight and obese.
According to the study of Robazza,C., Bortoli, L., Durigon, M., & Filho, E. (2020). “Sport
Motivation and Competitive Anxiety on Sport Performance in Adolescent Soccer Players: A
comparison Between School and club context.” The main aim of this thesis was to obtain a
comprehensive understanding of young football players motivation, competitive anxiety, the
association between these two variables, and basic psychological needs (BPN) satisfaction in the
Saudi Arabian context based on the application of self-determination theory (SDT). The thesis
consists of two studies. Just like in the study Kim, M., Hong, B., Yang, S. H., & Oh, D. (2020).
‘The Effect of Volleyball Training on Psychological Well-being in college Students” reveals the
possibility that the physical activity can prevent from depression or develop some symptoms of
depression has become the focus of the relevant studies. Exercise interventions are gaining
increasing attention in especially coping with depression forward are investigated, it is seen that
the physical activity applications have a promising influence on children and adolescents. In a
study, conducted by Motl et al. (2004), the inverse proportion between the change in the physical
activity and depressive symptoms during the prepubescent period was reported. A literature
review supported the idea that physical activity decreases symptoms of depression if it is
enthusiastic and in the form of leisure activity.

2.3 Related Research

The study conducted by Silva, M., Marcelino, R. Lacerda, D., & Joao, P. (2016). “Match
Analysis in Volleyball: a systematic review.” Explained that volleyball is probably one the most
popular sports in the world (Reeser & Bahr, 2003). Despite its universal nature and its official
history dating back more than a hundred years, there are still some uncertainties about its
techniques and tactics multidimensions (Joao, Leite, Mesquita, & Sampaio, 2010), psychological
(Trajkovic, Milanovic, Sporis, Milic, & Stankovic, (2012), nutritional and psychological needs.
(Valliant, Emplaincourt, & Wenzel, 2012). Therefore, there are still some ambiguities in the
planning of the training process to improve performance in the competition. However, in the
study of Schulenkorf, the field of sport-for-development (SFD) has received significant attention
from non-government organization, governmental agencies, sport practitioners, and sport
academics around the world. Sport-for-development has been defined as “The use of sport to
exert a positive influence on public health, the socialization of children, youths, and adults, the
social inclusion of the disadvantaged, the development of regions and states, and on fostering
intercultural exchange and conflict resolution” (Lyras & Welty Peachy, 2011, p.311). As a
consequence of growing political and institutional support, the number of sport-based projects
aimed at contributing to positive developments in these areas has been constantly increasing
(Coalter, 2007, 2013; Levermore & Beacom, 2009; Schulenkorf & Adair, 2014) (Schulenkorf, N.
2015)
According to the study of Shieh, S. (2023). “Influence of mental energy on volleyball
competition performance: a field test.” Sports scientists are also interested in mental energy.
Mental energy is defined as ‘an individual’s ability to continue long hours of thinking,
concentrating attention, and blocking distractions to achieve a given task” (Lykken, 2005,
p.331). As human beings, it is important to have sufficient mental energy to maintain attention
and accomplish daily activities and work. Sports science researchers are also interested in how
mental energy influences athletic performance. As well as in the study of Gokce, E., Gunes, E. &
Nalcaci, E. (2022). “The cognitive Benefits of Playing Volleyball. A systematic review’. A
recent study showed that the team sport athletes performed better in sustained attention and
processing speed that recreational athletes. As a team sport, volleyball is one of the sports with
the lowest incidence of concussion. Considering the cognitive functions such as attention,
cognitive functions such as attention, cognitive processing speed, and working memory are
susceptible to the effects of sports-related concussion.
