SCHOOL-BASED SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WEEK 2023


Theme: ‱ (PERMYRIAD): Propelling Erudite Youths Through Myriad Advancements of
Science and Technology
March 22-24, 2023

GENERAL GUIDELINES
1. This event is open to all students of Tuguegarao City Science High School.
2. YES-O officers are not permitted to join the contests except for TUKLAS: A Research
Project Fair.
3. Participants in their respective event are the only students to be excused in that day.
4. Participants must be in the venue 10 minutes before the allotted time of the contests.
5. Time slots of contests are subject to change.
6. Participation in all events is a must and deductions will be imposed to section/s who
will fail to have a participant to a certain event.
7. Each class president is required to submit a master list of all participants on March 17,
2023.
8. All contests shall compose of two (2) divisions: the Junior division (Grade 7, 8, & 9)
and the Senior division (Grade 10, 11, & 12).
9. For each category in TUKLAS: A Research Project Fair, Top 5 Best Display Boards,
Top 3 Researchers, and Best Presenter shall be awarded.
10. For the computation of the overall scores, the following shall be observed:
• Every section will have an initial score of one hundred (100) points, which may
increase or decrease depending on the performance of the students comprising
the group.
• For every event, eighty (80) points shall be given for the 1st place; sixty (60)
points for the 2nd place, forty (40) points for the 3rd place and twenty (20)
points for participation.
• For every event that a section does not join or have no representatives
whatsoever, a twenty (20) point demerit shall be given.
11. The Overall Champion, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up, Most Punctual and Most
Disciplined class for each division shall be declared during the closing program.

TUKLAS: A Research Project Fair


A. Research Defense
1. The event is open to all Grade 7, 9, 10, and 12 students of Tuguegarao City Science
High School.
2. Only three (3) members per group are allowed to defend their project. The rest of
the members are to stay on their respective defense boards to showcase their
respective study to individuals in the TCSHS’ mini gymnasium.
3. All members are required to wear formal attire; the use of coats, slacks, and
blouses is highly suggested on the day of the defense. Cross-dressing is strictly
prohibited.
4. Each group shall provide three (3) copies of their manuscripts and shall utilized
A4 sliding folders with the respective color assigned per category: Life – Green,
Applied – Blue, Robotics – White.
5. The deadline for the paper is on or before March 20, 2023. Each group shall pass
each paper to their YES-O grade level representatives.
6. Members participating in the presentation must be at the venue 10 minutes before
the time.
7. Any request for change of sequence will not be considered unless necessary.
8. The members are only given seven (7) minutes to present their research using
PowerPoint or other presentation software. The content of the PowerPoint must
include but not limited to the abstract, data analysis and interpretation, conclusion,
and recommendations of the study. A timer will start as soon as a member starts to
speak.
9. Another eight (8) minutes are allotted for the groups to answer the questions
from the panelists and further explain their research. After this, they may exit the
stage and proceed to their respective defense board.

B. Research Paper Format


1. INTRODUCTION - What relevant background information supports your research
problem/questions?
• Explain what is known or has already been done in your research area.
• Include a brief review of relevant literature.
• Include a brief description on how your project will address an issue,
concern or problem.
• Explain why this research is important and any societal impact of your
research.
2. METHODS – What procedures were carried out for the experimentation?
• Explain in detail what you did. What data did you collect and how did you
collect that data?

• Discuss your control group and the variables you tested. The statistical
treatment used and handling and disposal of waste may be included if
applicable.
• DO NOT include a list of materials.
3. RESULTS - What were the result(s) of your project?
• Include tables and figures which illustrate your data.
• Include relevant statistical analysis of the data.
4. DISCUSSION - What is your interpretation of these results?
• What do these results mean? Compare your results with theories, published
data, commonly held beliefs, and expected results.
• Discuss possible errors. Did any questions or problems arise that you were
not expecting? How did the data vary between repeated observations of
similar events? How were results affected by uncontrolled events?
5. CONCLUSIONS - What conclusions did you reach?
• What do these results mean in the context of the literature review and other
work being done in your research area? How do the results address your
research question? Do your results support your hypothesis?
• What application(s) do you see for your work?
6. REFERENCES-What are your sources?
• This section should not exceed one page. Limit your list to the most
important references.
• List the references/documentation used which were not of your own creation
(i.e., books, journal articles).
• Your reference list should be written based on the APA 7 Style.

C. Display Board Format


1. Students must create a display board with the size of one (1) whole illustration
board (– refer to figure 1.) The display board will be presented on the day of the
fair.
2. The display board should summarize the research study. The following items should
be seen in the project display: Abstract, Background, Objectives, Significance,
Methodology, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, Recommendations,
Bibliography and if applicable, Photo Credits (including illustrations and
graphics).
3. Tarpaulins will not be used in any level of Science Fair competition in support of
the environmental advocacy of the government in reducing the consumption of non-
biodegradable or non-recyclable materials.

Tagisan ng Talino sa Agham


1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have one (1) team comprised of three (3) members. Students from
different sections may join the event as a team.
3. The categories, which the questions revolve are as follows: Earth and Space, Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Current Events in Science and Technology, Nobel Laureates,
and General Information.
4. There will be three (3) rounds in the contest:
• Easy - 10 questions; 1 point each
• Average - 5 questions; 3 points each
• Difficult - 5 questions; 5 points each
5. All questions will be read twice by the Quiz Master. Contestants will write their answers
on their slates (1/8 illustration board) after the question is read twice.
6. Contestants may start answering only after the Quiz Masters signals GO. They must
stop writing answers after the time allotments: 15 seconds for the Easy round, 20
seconds for the Average round, and 30 seconds for the Difficult round.
7. All queries about the question (considerations) will only be entertained by the Quiz
Master right after the question.
8. All queries should be backed up by proofs that are not outsourced from the Wikipedia.
The quiz master has the right to consider or not consider the query.
9. The TOP THREE (3) groups for junior (Grade 7, 8) and senior division (Grade 9, 10)
will be proclaimed WINNERS after the contest.
10. The winners will be proclaimed after the contest.

Environment Quiz Bee


1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have one (1) participant.
3. The categories, which the questions revolve are as follows: Environmental Science,
Planetary Science, Earth Science, Climate Science, Geology, and Environmental
Trends.
4. There will be three (3) rounds in the contest:
• Easy - 10 questions; 1 point each
• Average - 5 questions; 3 points each
• Difficult - 5 questions; 5 points each
5. All questions will be read twice by the Quiz Master. Contestants will write their answers
on their slates (1/8 illustration board) after the question is read twice.

6. Contestants may start answering only after the Quiz Masters signals GO. They must
stop writing answers after the time allotments: 15 seconds for the Easy round, 20
seconds for the Average round, and 30 seconds for the Difficult round.

Digital Poster Making


1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have only one (1) participant.
3. The poster should revolve around the theme: BLAST: Breaching the Labyrinth of
Adversity as Conquerors of Science and Technology.
4. Participants may use any editing software (Photoshop, Paint, etc.).
5. Any artwork in the poster must be in original design. Poster designs containing clipart
will not be considered by judges.
6. Entries must be sent in A4 size (Portrait or Landscape) in JPEG/PNG format to the
official email of YES-O TCSHS (yeso.tcshs@gmail.com) on or before March 22,
2023.
The email subject should follow the format:
SBSTF2023 – DIGITAL POSTER MAKING [GRADE LEVEL]
(e.g., SBSTF2023 – DIGITAL POSTER MAKING [GRADE 7]
7. The contestants are given ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150) MINUTES to finish
their respective poster.
8. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

Traditional Poster Making


1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have one (1) participant.
3. The poster should revolve around the theme: BLAST: Breaching the Labyrinth of
Adversity as Conquerors of Science and Technology.
4. Medium for the visual artistry shall be OIL PASTEL ONLY. The required base paper
to be used during the contest is ⅛ ILLUSTRATION BOARD.
5. At the option of the contestant, one may use pencils to draft sketches of the concepts.
6. The contestants are given ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150) MINUTES to finish
their respective poster.
7. The facilitators of the contest shall collect the entries after the given period.
8. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

EnviroPhoto
1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have one team consisting of two (2) members. One takes the photo,
and one writes the essay. The essay would serve as a caption to the photo.
3. The photo and essay should revolve around the theme: BLAST: Breaching the
Labyrinth of Adversity as Conquerors of Science and Technology.
4. The essay should contain 500 – 750 words including articles.
5. Contestants may use any camera given that the photo should not be edited. ONLY
CONTRAST AND BRIGHTNESS can be adjusted.
6. Entries must be sent in Time New Roman (font style), 12 (font size), A4 size, PDF
format (photo and essay included – refer to figure 2.) to the official email of YES-O
TCSHS (yeso.tcshs@gmail.com) on March 22, 2023.
The email subject should follow the format:

Rock Painting
1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have only one (1) team consisting of two (2) members.
3. Contestants should provide their own materials (paint, paint brushes, palette, etc.)
including the base of the piece — a single rock with a size ranging from 15-30 cm.
4. The painting should revolve around the chosen environmental campaign of the
contestants.
5. The contestants are given ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY (120) MINUTES to
finish their respective piece. Failure to comply with the said deadline will result to
disqualification.
6. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

KaKaLeaf Collage
1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. Each section must have only one (1) participant.
3. Contestants should bring their own leaves and should only make use of fallen and/or
dried leaves. Picking of leaves is strictly prohibited and will result to deduction of
points.
4. Each contestant is free to decorate and conceptualize their piece for there will be no
theme nor style requirements. Depiction of gore, horror, hate, and the like is strictly
prohibited.
5. The required base paper to be used during the contest is ⅛ ILLUSTRATION BOARD.
6. Painting of leaves is allowed, however, contestants should bring their own paint, as well
as the other materials needed for painting.
7. The contestants are given ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY (120) MINUTES to
finish their respective piece. Failure to comply with the said deadline will result to
disqualification.
8. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

Green Thumb: Dish Garden Making


1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. This event is in collaboration with the TCSHS Barkada Kontra Droga (BKD) Club.
3. Each grade level must have one (1) team consisting of three (3) members.
4. Contestants should bring their own raw materials (gardening tools, plants, pots, soil,
etc.).
5. Each dish garden must incorporate elements, which revolve around the theme: "Bata!
Magtanim Ka, Iwasan ang Tukso ng Droga".
6. For the overall product, contestants have full creative freedom on the type of plants or
figures they will use. However, plants should still be substantially evident in the dish
gardens and the use of recyclable materials is highly encouraged.
7. The contestants are given ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY (150) MINUTES to finish
their respective piece. Failure to comply with the said deadline will result to deduction
of points.
8. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

STEMtokperiments
1. This competition is open to all Junior and Senior High School students of Tuguegarao
City Science High School.
2. There should be one (1) group per grade level consisting of five (5) members; the
roles of: actors, videographers and/or video editors should be filled accordingly, and
participants should be able to produce 1 entry per grade level.
3. The participants will be conducting an experiment and will present it via a TikTok
video. Participants should think of their own concept and should present the video
creatively.
4. Visual aids such as images, backdrops, and the like are allowed. Participants should
also give proper credits to their sources, especially if the experiment conducted is not
an original work by the participants.
5. The experiment conducted should be safe and should not pose any threat to the
contestants. The use of fire, harmful chemicals, and the like is highly discouraged.
6. The video should be at least 1 minute long and with the maximum of 3 minutes. Should
the video exceed the maximum time limit, consideration will be given to those who
have exceeded only 10 seconds but anything beyond that will lead to deduction from
the final score.
7. The video should not contain any harmful, offensive, and/or abusive elements such as
weapons, bloodshed, gore, or anything that depicts violence.
8. The following TikTok video format are highly recommended:
• File size: The video should be up to 287.6 MB in size for iOS, or 72 MB on
Android.
• Orientation: TikTok is formatted to be viewed on a smartphone, so vertical
video is the best.
• Dimensions: TikTok video dimensions should be 1080 x 1920.
• Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio should be that of a standard smartphone screen,
9:16. 1:1 is also possible, but it will not take up the whole screen.
• File type: TikTok supports .mp4 and .mov files.
9. Entries must be sent to the official email of YES-O TCSHS (yeso.tcshs@gmail.com)
on or before February 28, 2023.
The email subject should follow the format:

Failure to comply with the set deadline will lead to deduction of points.
10. The entries will be posted on YES-O’s Facebook Account (TCSHS Youth for
Environment in Schools Organization) and additional points will be given to the video
with the highest combined total of Likes, Shares and positive reactions (Like, Love,
Haha, and Wow).
11. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.

Siyensikula
1. This competition is open to all bonafide Junior and Senior High school students from
Tuguegarao City Science High School.
2. For each year level, at most seven (7) students may collaborate to send only one (1)
entry.
3. The participants must choose and discuss a difficult topic under Physical Sciences and
Life concept in a clear, creative, and engaging manner through a video presentation that
is not more than three (3) minutes. The participant can discuss the topic in English
and/or Filipino.
4. All contents in the video must be original and are owned by the participant. Entries may
include personal experiences and thoughtful observations. Videos must reflect that the
student has carefully examined and thought through the topic.
5. All creative visual tools such as animations, simulations, physical demonstrations, or
visual aids are allowed. List and cite all of the resources used including but not limited
to images, audio, video clips, books, articles, etc. Use public domain sites for your
references and resources. Entries with photos and videos which are derivative works
will automatically be disqualified.
6. Entries must be sent in MP4 format to the official email of YES-O TCSHS
(yeso.tcshs@gmail.com) on or before February 28, 2023.
The email subject should follow the format:

7. There will be two stages in the judging process:

• POPULAR VOTE - The Popular Vote invites the public to participate in the judging
process through the official Facebook page of the TCSHS YES-O. The highest
combined total of Likes, Shares and positive reactions (Like, Love, Haha, and Wow)
on the video's original post on the YES-O’s official Facebook page will receive a
special recognition for this accomplishment.
• COMMITTEE REVIEW - The Committee will review and score all the video entries
based on the criteria for judging.
8. The accumulated points for the Popular Vote will be added in the final score per year
level.
9. The winners will be announced during the awarding ceremony.
