STATE STANDARDS
(our school system uses the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Fine Arts Standards)
117.209 (c) (4) (B) examine written and aurally presented music representative of diverse
genres, styles, periods, and cultures.
117.209 (c) (4) (C) identify relationships of music content and processes to other academic
disciplines such as the relationship between music and mathematics, literature, history, and the
sciences.
LEARNING/BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
 Discuss with peers about the cultural attitude surrounding jazz music when it was
first becoming popular.
 Write reflective answers to the same topic as above.
RATIONALE
Students are rehearsing Jazzy Holidays by Johnnie Vinson, and have spent time this semester
listening to jazz music and learning to play swing rhythms.

This lesson occurred during our week of elearning during the semester, when in-person
rehearsal was not possible. In this lesson students watched a short video about the development
of Jazz then reflected on what they discussed.
IMPLEMENT
LESSON OPENING
 Watch the Birth of Jazz
TEACHING PROCEDURES
 Whole group discussion – teacher asks clarifying questions about the content of the
video. Checking for understanding of terms, geography, and culture referenced in the
video
 Students watch the video again
 Students are assigned into small groups to discuss the answers to two questions based on
the video. The teacher listens in on the discussions.
o Why do you think that jazz music became so popular so quickly?
o What does the narrator mean that “jazz is America’s genuine classical music?”
LESSON CLOSING
 Students work alone to write reflective answers on the same two questions above.
Student answers are submitted to the teacher.
Analyze
PRE/POST ASSESSMENT or EVALUATION (as needed)
 Students are assessed based on their thoughtfulness in answering the above questions.
