Redundant-design CAN-bus for communication over extended distances
iBus for local communication of a master unit with its slave units
Software-configurable analog inputs for all usual sensor signals, typically voltage 0…10V, current
0…20mA, Pt100, Pt1000, NiCrNi-type thermocouples, frequency signals
Sensor monitoring of analog signal inputs
Local status information for sensor channels by individual LED per channel
Actors: - volt-free digital switching outputs (relay or semiconductor)
- current or voltage sources

The N3000 modular-concept sensor / actor system is distinguished by the compactness of the devices, the rugged
construction for severe environments, their standardised size for panel cutouts and the possibility of distributed
placement of the individual components: the I/O units can be located in the immediate vicinity of the sensors, the
actor units are installed directly adjacent to the valves to be controlled, indicators, etc., and dialog units are arranged
for convenient operation at central or local control positions. Both stand-alone solutions with individual I/O units and
complex integrated systems are possible.
Communication between the components which can be distributed over extended distances is by the redundant-
design CAN-bus. This design permits the amount of wiring to sensors and actors to be reduced to the very minimum
without compromising the availability of the individual components in the event of any failure of, say, a bus line or an
individual master or slave module.
The measured-data acquitsition units can be equipped for connecting all types of commercial sensors. Likewise,
digital inputs and actor outputs are available as current or voltage sources or digital contacts. A master unit, to be
extended in steps of 4, may incorporate up to 32 channels. Extended by slave units, one master can handle up to
256 channels.
Each analog input channel is individually programmed by configuration software for the particular sensor or
transducer to be connected without the need for manual intervention. Switching over of the analog sources is also by
programmed electronic switches.
Thanks to the pluggable connecting lines, the system is extremely user-friendly, especially during pre-assembly of
the control cabinets in the workshop and later during servicing.
The operating voltage required is a DC voltage in a range of 18…32 Volts. Power requirements depend on the
number of components used.

1. The concept – The components

The block diagram in Fig. 1 provides an overview of the distributed and modular design of the system and the bus
connections used for interconnecting the components. Via the redundant buses CAN1 and CAN2, the data are
exchanged in between the individual head stations (masters) and with the optional PCs. The connection of the
expansion units (slaves) to ”their” master is by means of a local iBus each. Each of the three basic types of the
N3000 system – I/O-, dialog and signal module – is available as a master unit and as a slave unit for front mounting
in the operator panels/consoles as well as in a 19” rack. The I/O module is also available for direct surface mounting
on back-plates, e.g. in the control cabinet.

Each module coupled to the buses handles the local tasks autonomously. Communication with the slave modules is
controlled by the respective master. The masters report cyclically to the two CAN-buses, if no message is
forthcoming, failure of the CAN node is signalled to all other nodes. Consequently, if one master unit fails, this will
not affect the total system, but only the part with the measuring points and actors downstream of this master. This
quite substantially enhances the availability of the total system.

1.1 Master / Slave – The differences

The master modules differ from the slaves only in their functionality and not in their shape or dimensions. The
interfaces with the CAN1 and CAN2-buses and the RS232 – RS422 – RS485 combination interface are only
available in the master. Moreover, it is the controlling module for ”its” iBus, keeps the data of the slave modules, that
are connected to it, ready in its store for transfer to the CAN-buses, reports cyclically, and transmits any change in
measured data, etc. via the CAN-buses.

The slaves are provided only with a connection to the iBus. Responding to cyclic requests from the master, they
deliver to it the sensor data collected by them, or pass on the actor data issued by the master to their outputs. The
dialog modules receive the data to be displayed and enable new data to be called up from the master by keystrokes.
The signal modules are only passive LEDs and continuously indicate the current sensor status for a maximum of 24
channels.

1.2 Slaves to master

A maximum of 6 slave modules can be connected to each master. The details and limits for the hardware-I/Os are
descript in the software documentation. The specific addresses of the slave modules are set by means of a rotary
switch located on the connector panel.
Available slave modules - up to the maximum number specified - can be connected to a master module in any
desired sequence.
Each slave is connected in parallel to the signal lines of the iBus. Electrically, response of each slave is passive.
Thanks to the plug-and-socket design of the connectors it is possible, if a defect occurs, simply to remove the slave
module from the bus line and to join the two cables by means of their terminations. The remaining modules will
continue to operate without the module that has been removed and their performance will not be affected.

2.1 The dialog module

The dialog module is the man/machine interface (MMI) of the N3000 system at central or local control positions, a
duty station or also in dayrooms and cabins. The user-friendly, straightforward keyboard permits essential machine
data to be displayed – in a customised selection – on a luminous graphic LC display by briefly pressing a button.
But all other data can also be conveniently displayed. Sensor groups are available, visualised as bar graphs,
showing limit values and clear-text display of measured data.
The built-in signal horn provides an audible alarm in the event of malfunctions or whenever any monitored points
exceed limit values. Audible and visual alarms can be acknowledged by means of two separate buttons.
Backlighting of the LC display is infinitely variable from zero to maximum.

2.1.1 The panel version for front mounting in control panels/consoles

The panel-mounting version is installed directly into precut openings in the control panels/consoles and fixed to the
four concealed studs at the corners to the front plate of the panel/console.

All plug-in terminals have two fixing screws on the sides. These secure the plugs against slipping out of the their
sockets due to vibrations in operation.

All connected cables are to be provided with suitable cable clips or cable conduits by the user.

2.3.3 The different functions of the digital inputs

The four digital inputs are separated from the microprocessor unit by optocouplers and internal soldering bridges
adapts them to the following tasks:

- Working as a twin pole with wire break monitoring for direct connection of volt free switching contacts.
- Volt free inputs to detect wire break monitored switching contacts powered by other sources.
- Input 1 and 2 to monitor signals from impulse sources, as a twin pole or volt free.
- Input 3 and 4 to monitor frequency signals from Pick-ups, as a twin pole or volt free.
- Input 1, and if necessary 2, as volt free and independent inputs for the function fire signalling (refer 2.3.5)

2.3.4 The function of the integrated buttons

The versions with integrated push buttons make possible the following additional functions:

- Adapting the LED light intensity to the ambient light (dimmer) by the push button . Repeated pushing the
button the LED light intensity is adjusted more dark or more intensive. The intensity of the LED „Power“ and the
white backlight of the dimmer push button is adapted as well.
- The push buttons F1 to F3 are backlightable with the colours red or green and are available for free functions
selected by the project department or pre selected as described in section 2.3.5.

2.3.5 The type N3000-SMP10 to place in the accommodation

In this version as a master box an independent and against all other parts volt free unit is inbuilt for fire signalling
with buzzer, red signalling lamp and test button (F1). Depending on the society class the buzzer and the signalling
lamp is activated in common by the digital input 1 or separated by digital input 1 and digital input 2. In action the
buzzer works automatically and symmetric with sound on / sound off.

A second buzzer activated by the master electronic is signalling at the “On Duty“-station engine alarms.

Pushing the button F2 activates the function “On Duty“ and the button field is backlighted green. The next push on
button F2 deactivates the functions and selects “Off Duty”. A not authorised logout is quitted by the 2 seconds
lasting red and following green backlighted button. The station is logged in continued.

The red backlight of the push button F3 is signalling an active engine alarm. Pushing F3 acknowledge the sounding
alarm. The red flashing light changes to steady light on.

2.4 The visualisation module

The visualisation module of the N3000-VMP type is a dialogue module that has been expanded by many functions.

The graphics, data or pictograms visualised on the touch-panel TFT display in colour and with a high resolution are
freely programmable. The touch function thus provides intuitive operator guidance, also in a number of languages.
As a man-machine interface, the module has application in such areas as machine monitoring systems, power
management systems (PMS), pump control systems, or telecontrol systems.

The Linux operating system used makes the N3000-VMP an ahead-of-time and powerful tool. The units are
available with screen diagonals of 6,5“ or 10,4“.

Backlighting of the TFT display is stepless from zero to maximum. The lamps for the backlighting are housed in a
slot at the side that is closed in operation; thus they are readily accessible and, consequently, easy to replace. Being
sealed at the front and protected from moisture and dust, the module lends itself also for outdoor application, e.g. on
the flybridge.

For data exchange between the visualisation module and the other equipment, the N3000-VMP is equipped with a
CAN-bus, a combination interface RS232 – RS422 – RS485, a USB-connection and an Ethernet network-
connection. Digital inputs are provided to scan switches or push buttons, and relay outputs to activate horns or
indicating lamps, etc..

3. The electrical connections, signal lamps, and address switches

3.1 24 V DC operating voltage

The operating voltage required by all modules is a DC voltage in a range of 18…32 Volts, ideally buffered by a
battery or similar source of adequately dimensioned capacity. The leads are connected to the screw clamp-terminal
X1 on the modules. The terminal is of the duplicated type so that, where modules are wired side by side, the
operating voltage can be looped through. No further terminals are required for distribution of the operating voltage.

3.2 Signal lamp to indicate operating status

The signal lamp identifying the operation status shows whether the module is operational (green), an insulation fault
exists to the battery voltage or the housing (green/yellow, flashing), the boot or programming mode has been

In the panel-mounting and rack-mounting modules, this lamp is located at the front in the upper left corner inside the
green framing. In the cabinet-mounting modules, it is located to the left of the address switch(es).

3.3 The iBus

The iBus is a 3-wire serial multi-point differential signal bus designed according to RS485 and serves for internal
communication of the slaves with ”their” master. Up to a maximum of 6 slaves can be connected to an iBus line. For
more details see software description. Positive connection of the pre-fabricated cables to the modules is by means
of the rugged 5-pin plug-in connectors with an M12 screw socket.

3.3.1 The addressing on the iBus

All modules are connected in parallel to the iBus lines. In order to prevent data collision and provide logically unique
assignment, each module has an address assigned for the specific application. These addresses are set on the
slave modules by means of rotary switches arranged on the plug panel, the adjustment being effected by means of
small screw drivers.
The slave modules are addressed hexadecimally from 2 to F by means of the rotary switch S1. The master to be
controlled on the local iBus invariably has the two-digit CAN-bus address assigned (rotary switches S1 and S2),
while the control module installed in the I/O master for the inputs and outputs has the address 1 assigned. With this
assignment, the address 1 is not available for the external slave modules.

3.3.2 The cable connections

The cable connections of the iBus are pre-fabricated ready for use and terminations are in the form of an angle-type
plug and an angle-type socket. The angle is such that the outgoing cables on the two connectors connected to the
modules are inside the rear wall of the modules and, consequently, it is not necessary to allow any clearance for
add-ons at the sides of the modules.
In the event of a module being replaced or removed for repair, the plug-and-socket connection of the cable permits
the integrity of the circuit to be maintained without the need for any additional parts or replacement of the cable.

3.3.3 Measures for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

The bodies of the plug-and-socket connectors are screened throughout and bonded to the module housings. The
cables are of the twisted-pair type, also screened and the screening is fully bonded to the connector body. On each
module, the iBus-GND signal is capacitatively bonded to the screening.

3.4 The CAN-bus to the master modules

All master modules communicate with each other or with other systems via the CAN-bus systems to which they are
connected like a string of pearls. Each module has an address assigned to it for the specific application. This
provides logically unique assignments. These addresses are set on the modules by means of rotary switches
arranged on the plug panel, which can be operated by means of small screw drivers.

3.4.1 The addressing of the two CAN-buses

A two-digit hexadecimal address is assigned to the masters. This has to be set by means of the rotary switches S1
and S2. At present, up to 31 CAN-nodes can be connected to the N3000 system.

3.4.2 The signal lamps for status indication

A signal lamp each is installed on the right-hand side of the two connectors of the CAN-bus connections. These
lamps signal access of the respective master to the CAN-bus. If any malfunction occurs, this makes it easier for the
service people to detect the cause of the malfunction on the CAN-bus.

3.4.3 The cable connections

The cables of the CAN-bus 1 (CAN1) are connected to the terminal X3, those of the CAN-bus 2 (CAN2) to terminal
X4. The terminals are of the duplicated type, i.e. the cables are looped through. In this manner, it is possible to
continue the cabling conveniently to the next unit with a CAN-bus connection.
Both bus strands are completely independent of each other, both electrically and in respect of the data transfer. This
provides redundancy.
The cables used on the CAN-buses must be suitable for this purpose! Only cables that are screened and whose
cores are of the twisted-pair type must be used. It is important in making the connection to ensure that only cores
from a core pair are connected to the “High” and “Low” terminals. The ”GND” terminal only serves for equipotential
bonding within the CAN-bus circuits. The screening of the CAN-bus cables must be wall-bonded to the two cable
clips under the CAN-bus terminals of the modules.

3.4.4 Measures for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

On each module, the “GND” terminals of the CAN-buses are capacitatively bonded to the module housing and,
consequently, to ground. In selecting the cables and in making the connections, reference should be made to the
preceding notes.

3.5 Serial universal interface RS232 – RS422 – RS485 of master modules

Provided at the sub-D9 connector X5 is a universal serial interface for serial point-to-point data transfer, e.g. to a
printer or similar equipment. The wiring up of the socket of the connected cable automatically selects the setting for
RS232, RS422 or RS485. The protocol for data transfer must be provided by means of the software.

3.6 The input and output channels of the I/O modules

The sensors and actors are connected to the terminals X10 to X40.
The 16-pole terminal X10 in its basic version is equipped with 4 volt-free relay switching outputs and 4 opto-
decoupled digital inputs for monitoring of switches. The wiring-up of the internal soldering jumpers defines whether
the relay outputs are normally open circuit or normally closed circuit working and whether the connected digital
contacts are operated by the internally provided 24 Volt sensor voltage or from an external source. Individual
selection is possible for each channel.
The X10.3 and X10.4 channels can also be used as opto-decoupled frequency inputs for frequency transducers with
the NORIS standard signal output. This mode is defined by the built-in operating software.
Up to 24 additional channels can be connected to the terminals X20, X30 and X40.

In order to use these channels, it is necessary either to have plug-in modules with universal inputs, with analog
signal outputs, or relay outputs to be installed. These modules are described in the Section ”Plug-in Modules”.

3.6.1 The mounting locations of the plug-in modules

The plug-in-modules, a maximum of 7, are each plugged into an edge-card socket directly on the baseboard of an
I/O-module. Coding bars of these plug sockets protect the slot of the control module and the other slots against mis-
matching. In the built-in condition, a positive locking metal cage locates the plug-in modules.
For installation and removal an allen wrench is needed. The plug-in sockets and modules are accessible on removal
of the baseboard from the housing and the metal cage.

Plug-in modules inside I/O-module Fig.18

3.6.1a The mounting locations of the plug-in modules in the design from Revision N
The improved design for applications with higher vibration levels uses instead of the edge-card sockets on both sides connectors
type ERNI SMC-B, on the I/O interface board female style, on the plug-in modules male style.
With the snap-in construction of the polyamide cage to fix the plug-in cards on the I/O interface board a simple replacement of the
plug-in modules without tools is possible. In the polyamide cage integrated springs for each plug-in card hold them in closed
position exact in their slot without clearance.
The position of the plug-in socket for the control module is different from them of the other plug-ins to avoid mismatched mounting
of plug-in cards.

3.6.2 The selection of the cables

The cables to the sensors and actors must be suitable for the specific application.
Where Pt100 sensors are directly connected, it is important to see to it that the lengths of the cables are as short as
possible and that the cores are of sufficient cross-sectional area in order to minimise measuring errors due to the
influence of the cable.
The compensating leads of the thermocouples must be led directly to the terminals where the sensor for the
temperature reference junction is installed. These may also be the terminals of the I/O unit.

3.6.3 Measures for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

The chromated aluminium housing acts as a Faraday cage against electromagnetic fields. EMI-suppression filters
are provided at each individual connection directly at the terminals to discharge any unwanted signals that may be
injected through the cables.
The measures at the universal inputs for sensor signals are described in the Section ”Plug-in Modules”.

4. The plug-in modules for the I/O modules

There are four different plug-in modules available for installation in the I/O modules to handle the different measuring
and actor tasks::
• Control module: acts as coupling element between main CPU module and the modules serving
the inputs and outputs, in addition
4 digital inputs and
4 relay outputs with volt-free contacts
• Universal analog input module: 4 universal inputs for connection of two-, three- or four-wire sensors and volt-
free sensor signals
• Analog output module: 4 analog signal outputs with standardised output voltages 0…2…10V or
currents 0…4…20mA
• Digital input / output module: 4 digital inputs with broken-wire monitoring
4 relay outputs with volt-free contacts settable as NCC or NOC by
soldering jumpers
4 volt-free short-circuit-proof semiconductor outputs

4.1 The control module SA653 with digital inputs and relay outputs
In its basic configuration, each I/O module has a built-in control module with its own microprocessor as a sub-
processor to the main processor to handle a variety of tasks: The sub-processor controls a maximum of six
additional plug-in modules, processes the measuring and actor tasks of the up to 32 input and output channels
independently, and exchanges its data with the main processor of the I/O module on the SA650 board serially via
the iBus. In sharing the work, it reduces the load on the main processor.

4.1.1 The on-board signal inputs and outputs

There are 4 individually configurable, opto-decoupled, digital input channels and 4 volt-free relay outputs on-board of
the control module. Soldering jumpers define whether the relay outputs operate as NOC or NCC and whether the
digital inputs are operated by the internally provided 24 V voltage for sensors or by an external source. Through
selection by means of specification software, the control processor also permits frequencies up to 10,000 Hz to be
measured at the X10.3 and X10.4 channels.

The control processor monitors the +5V, +24V and ±15V voltages supplied by the power pack of the I/O module and
the insulation against the module housing (ground-fault monitoring).
The temperature at the .circuitry is continuously determined and, consequently, a reference junction realised for
temperature measurements by means of thermocouples. This eliminates the need for an external temperature
measuring point for this measuring task.

4.1.2 The control of additional plug-in modules and signal lamps

The data transfer to a maximum of 6 additional plug-in modules is by the serial SPI interface of the control module
SA653 and hard-wired selection logic. In order to attain a sufficient rate of data throughput, the data transfer is
effected at a substantially higher speed compared to the iBus.
All modules that are operable from the control processor are equipped with a serial EEPROM in which the module-
specific data like the type of module and calibration data of the universal inputs or analog signal outputs are stored.
Consequently, the control processor inherently identifies the plug-in modules used in an I/O module in every switch-
on cycle to compare them with the specification data from the main processor.
The plug-in modules with SA647 universal inputs are supplied with the data for configuring the measuring channels,
selecting the actual measuring channel, and controlling the analog-to-digital converters. The raw measured data of
the selected A/D converter are delivered back to the control processor.
The plug-in modules with SA656 analog outputs are supplied with the data for configuring the output channels and
setting the output signals. The data remain stored there until the next overwriting cycle.
The data for setting the relay switching position are transmitted to the plug-in modules with SA655 relay outputs.
There, the data also remain stored until the next overwriting cycle.
The data on illumination colour – off, red, red flashing, green are transmitted to the signal lamps for channel status
indication inside the I/O module. Here again the data remain stored until the next overwriting cycle.

4.2 The SA647 plug-in module with universal inputs for connection of the sensors
Volt-free electric signals of all usual sensors with two-, three- or four-wire connection can be measured directly from
the SA647 plug-in module: resistances like Pt100, Pt1000 etc., thermocouple type K, voltage 0…2…10V, current
loop 0…4…20mA, switching contact, also with wire break monitoring.

Each of the 4 symmetrically laid out analog input channels, which are software-configurable independent of each
other, is protected against disturbing voltages up to a maximum of ±40 Volts and set after switching on and checking
for wrong connection for the programmed sensor signal by means of electronic switches. The calibrating data of
each individual channel are stored in the on-board EEPROM and transmitted after initialisation to the control
processor of the control module. The EEPROM also carries information for identification of the module.
The 4 channels of the module are periodically scanned by the A/D converter with 16-bit resolution. Access to the
channels is managed by the control processor. The latter is also where the measured values are ready to be
”fetched” by the main processor via the iBus which in the further process evaluates, corrects them with the individual
calibration data, and transmits them with an accuracy of up to 10 bits to all other components via the iBus and the
CAN-buses.

4.3 Power supply to sensors on X2

At the X2 terminal, each I/O module provides a stabilised 24 Volt power supply for sensors requiring an operating
voltage (e.g. speed pickups or measuring transducers with 4…20mA signal output). The power supply is electrically
isolated from the primary battery voltage and loadable with a maximum of 200 mA.
In order to avoid measured data from being falsified by different reference potentials at the analog inputs, the signal
outputs of the sensors must only be connected to the I/O modules feeding them!

4.4 The SA655 plug-in module with digital inputs and/or digital outputs
For added functionalities or where only simple, but low-cost digital inputs are required, users can choose the SA655
plug-in modules.
The SA655-1.G plug-in module provides four digital inputs which, set by soldering bridges, scan the respective
external switching contact, galvanically bonded to the internal 24 V or volt-free and, consequently, driven by an
external voltage source. If the switching contact is fitted with a 22kOhm-resistor, the leads to the switching contact
are also monitored for integrity.

on the on-board EEPROM are the calibration data plus information for identification. Upon initialisation, the data
are transmitted to the control processor of the control module.

The voltage values to be set (0…2…10V) or current values (0…4…20mA) are transmitted periodically from the
control processor to the 4 D/A converters and remain stored there until the next overwriting cycle. The sources are
protected against reverse voltages up to a maximum of ±40 Volts.

4.6 Measures for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

As described earlier in Section 3.6.3, EMI-suppression filters provided directly at the connecting cable/screw
terminal transitions act to prevent the injection of high frequency signals.
Low-pass filters and symmetrically laid out amplifiers at the universal inputs for sensor signals act to prevent
conducted interference. Further protective measures are provided to prevent polarity reversal, short-time
overvoltages or transients and wrong connection to the operating voltage.
Connections to the sensors should preferably be made by means of screened and twisted-pair cables. The cable
screening should be fully bonded at suitable points in the direct vicinity of the respective I/O module to the housing
potential.

5. The additional components in the master modules

5.1 The clock in the master modules

The master modules in the panel casing are equipped with a battery-backed clock. This means that the master
module will maintain the current time information also in the event of the 24 V DC operating voltage failing.
The clock comes factory-set at UTC or GMT.

5.2 The log book on the removable compact flash card

The master modules are provided with a slot accessible at the side to insert a compact flash card. This is available
with different storage capacities between 64MB and 1GB (status 12/03).
This compact flash card fulfils several functions:
• a suitable configuration in the specification software provided, it can replace the usual data logger. The
operating data are continuously stored in the same format with data and clock time. If required, these data are
delivered via the CAN-bus, e.g. to a PC for display. Or, the compact flash card is removed from the module
and the data transferred via a card reader into the PC for evaluation.
• Transfer newly prepared or modified specification software to the master.
• Transfer newly prepared or modified operating software the main processor.
In regular operation, the slot is protected from the ingress of coarse dust by a tightly sealing plate. Upon removing a
screw, the plate can be turned away to the rear, the compact flash card is pushed out of the slot with the unlocking
mechanism and can be removed for evaluation or archiving.
