The N3000 modular-concept sensor / actor system is distinguished by the compactness of the devices, the rugged
construction for severe environments, their standardised size for panel cutouts and the possibility of distributed
placement of the individual components: the I/O units can be located in the immediate vicinity of the sensors, the
actor units are installed directly adjacent to the valves to be controlled, indicators, etc., and dialog units are arranged
for convenient operation at central or local control positions. Both stand-alone solutions with individual I/O units and
complex integrated systems are possible.
Communication between the components which can be distributed over extended distances is by the redundant-
design CAN-bus. This design permits the amount of wiring to sensors and actors to be reduced to the very minimum
without compromising the availability of the individual components in the event of any failure of, say, a bus line or an
individual master or slave module.
The measured-data acquitsition units can be equipped for connecting all types of commercial sensors. Likewise,
digital inputs and actor outputs are available as current or voltage sources or digital contacts. A master unit, to be
extended in steps of 4, may incorporate up to 32 channels. Extended by slave units, one master can handle up to
256 channels.
Each analog input channel is individually programmed by configuration software for the particular sensor or
transducer to be connected without the need for manual intervention. Switching over of the analog sources is also by
programmed electronic switches.
Thanks to the pluggable connecting lines, the system is extremely user-friendly, especially during pre-assembly of
the control cabinets in the workshop and later during servicing.
The operating voltage required is a DC voltage in a range of 18…32 Volts. Power requirements depend on the
number of components used.

The slaves are provided only with a connection to the iBus. Responding to cyclic requests from the master, they
deliver to it the sensor data collected by them, or pass on the actor data issued by the master to their outputs. The
dialog modules receive the data to be displayed and enable new data to be called up from the master by keystrokes.
The signal modules are only passive LEDs and continuously indicate the current sensor status for a maximum of 24
channels.
In the versions for installation in 19" racks two components are mounted side by side.
All single components listed above are combinable. The rack versions are designated as listed here:
The dialog module is the man/machine interface (MMI) of the N3000 system at central or local control positions, a
duty station or also in dayrooms and cabins. The user-friendly, straightforward keyboard permits essential machine
data to be displayed – in a customised selection – on a luminous graphic LC display by briefly pressing a button.
But all other data can also be conveniently displayed. Sensor groups are available, visualised as bar graphs,
showing limit values and clear-text display of measured data.
The built-in signal horn provides an audible alarm in the event of malfunctions or whenever any monitored points
exceed limit values. Audible and visual alarms can be acknowledged by means of two separate buttons.
Backlighting of the LC display is infinitely variable from zero to maximum.

All plug-in terminals have two fixing screws on the sides. These secure the plugs against slipping out of the their
sockets due to vibrations in operation.
All connected cables are to be provided with suitable cable clips or cable conduits by the user.
The four digital inputs are separated from the microprocessor unit by optocouplers and internal soldering bridges
adapts them to the following tasks:
- Working as a twin pole with wire break monitoring for direct connection of volt free switching contacts.
- Volt free inputs to detect wire break monitored switching contacts powered by other sources.
- Input 1 and 2 to monitor signals from impulse sources, as a twin pole or volt free.
- Input 3 and 4 to monitor frequency signals from Pick-ups, as a twin pole or volt free.
- Input 1, and if necessary 2, as volt free and independent inputs for the function fire signalling (refer 2.3.5)
The versions with integrated push buttons make possible the following additional functions:
- Adapting the LED light intensity to the ambient light (dimmer) by the push button . Repeated pushing the
button the LED light intensity is adjusted more dark or more intensive. The intensity of the LED „Power“ and the
white backlight of the dimmer push button is adapted as well.
- The push buttons F1 to F3 are backlightable with the colours red or green and are available for free functions
selected by the project department or pre selected as described in section 2.3.5.
In this version as a master box an independent and against all other parts volt free unit is inbuilt for fire signalling
with buzzer, red signalling lamp and test button (F1). Depending on the society class the buzzer and the signalling
lamp is activated in common by the digital input 1 or separated by digital input 1 and digital input 2. In action the
buzzer works automatically and symmetric with sound on / sound off.
A second buzzer activated by the master electronic is signalling at the “On Duty“-station engine alarms.
Pushing the button F2 activates the function “On Duty“ and the button field is backlighted green. The next push on
button F2 deactivates the functions and selects “Off Duty”. A not authorised logout is quitted by the 2 seconds
lasting red and following green backlighted button. The station is logged in continued.
The red backlight of the push button F3 is signalling an active engine alarm. Pushing F3 acknowledge the sounding
alarm. The red flashing light changes to steady light on.
The visualisation module of the N3000-VMP type is a dialogue module that has been expanded by many functions.
The graphics, data or pictograms visualised on the touch-panel TFT display in colour and with a high resolution are
freely programmable. The touch function thus provides intuitive operator guidance, also in a number of languages.
As a man-machine interface, the module has application in such areas as machine monitoring systems, power
management systems (PMS), pump control systems, or telecontrol systems.
The Linux operating system used makes the N3000-VMP an ahead-of-time and powerful tool. The units are
available with screen diagonals of 6,5“ or 10,4“.
Backlighting of the TFT display is stepless from zero to maximum. The lamps for the backlighting are housed in a
slot at the side that is closed in operation; thus they are readily accessible and, consequently, easy to replace. Being
sealed at the front and protected from moisture and dust, the module lends itself also for outdoor application, e.g. on
the flybridge.
For data exchange between the visualisation module and the other equipment, the N3000-VMP is equipped with a
CAN-bus, a combination interface RS232 – RS422 – RS485, a USB-connection and an Ethernet network-
connection. Digital inputs are provided to scan switches or push buttons, and relay outputs to activate horns or
indicating lamps, etc..

NET USB
Via the two CAN-buses - CAN1 and CAN2 -, the N3000-VMP communicates with the other components of the
N3000 system. The CAN-bus address is stored in the internal EEPROM and can be changed only by a password-
protected access via the software. The plug-in terminals X3 and X4 accept conductors up to 2,5 mm² with screw or
cage-clamp connections.
Two independent universal serial interfaces at the sub-D9 connectors X5 and X8 are provided for serial point-to-
point data connections, e.g. printers, PCs for DICARE or similar devices. Assigning the socket of the connected
cable automatically selects the settings for RS232, RS422 or RS485.
The bottom-connecting X9 provides a quick USB connection for direct communication with PCs. X9 will accept all
devices to USB standard. Also, it is possible to transfer new operating software or user data by means of a memory
stick.
A 10/100MB Ethernet network can be connected at an RJ45 plug-in connection at the bottom. Suitable software
back-up provided, this permits access to diverse data sources, such as on-board computers, cargo computers, etc.
Also conceivable is its use as a terminal with web-server.
Two volt-free digital inputs at 24 V level are provided at the connection X12.
The four relay outputs at connector X11 are equipped with two-way contacts. For the maximum switching currents
and voltages, please refer to the technical data in the Appendix.
On the right next to the network connection, there is a slot on the underside to load a compact flash card. In normal
operation, the slot is closed for protection against coarse dust by a tightly sealing plate. Upon releasing the two
screws, the plate can be removed. The compact flash card is forced out of the slot by the unlocking mechanism and
can be removed for evaluation or archiving. Further details on its use are described under “The log book on the
compact flash card”.
In order to use these channels, it is necessary either to have plug-in modules with universal inputs, with analog
signal outputs, or relay outputs to be installed. These modules are described in the Section ”Plug-in Modules”.
3.6.1a The mounting locations of the plug-in modules in the design from Revision N
The improved design for applications with higher vibration levels uses instead of the edge-card sockets on both sides connectors
type ERNI SMC-B, on the I/O interface board female style, on the plug-in modules male style.
With the snap-in construction of the polyamide cage to fix the plug-in cards on the I/O interface board a simple replacement of the
plug-in modules without tools is possible. In the polyamide cage integrated springs for each plug-in card hold them in closed
position exact in their slot without clearance.
The position of the plug-in socket for the control module is different from them of the other plug-ins to avoid mismatched mounting
of plug-in cards.
4.1 The control module SA653 with digital inputs and relay outputs
In its basic configuration, each I/O module has a built-in control module with its own microprocessor as a sub-
processor to the main processor to handle a variety of tasks: The sub-processor controls a maximum of six
additional plug-in modules, processes the measuring and actor tasks of the up to 32 input and output channels
independently, and exchanges its data with the main processor of the I/O module on the SA650 board serially via
the iBus. In sharing the work, it reduces the load on the main processor.

The control processor monitors the +5V, +24V and ±15V voltages supplied by the power pack of the I/O module and
the insulation against the module housing (ground-fault monitoring).
The temperature at the .circuitry is continuously determined and, consequently, a reference junction realised for
temperature measurements by means of thermocouples. This eliminates the need for an external temperature
measuring point for this measuring task.
4.2 The SA647 plug-in module with universal inputs for connection of the sensors
Volt-free electric signals of all usual sensors with two-, three- or four-wire connection can be measured directly from
the SA647 plug-in module: resistances like Pt100, Pt1000 etc., thermocouple type K, voltage 0…2…10V, current
loop 0…4…20mA, switching contact, also with wire break monitoring.
Each of the 4 symmetrically laid out analog input channels, which are software-configurable independent of each
other, is protected against disturbing voltages up to a maximum of ±40 Volts and set after switching on and checking
for wrong connection for the programmed sensor signal by means of electronic switches. The calibrating data of
each individual channel are stored in the on-board EEPROM and transmitted after initialisation to the control
processor of the control module. The EEPROM also carries information for identification of the module.
The 4 channels of the module are periodically scanned by the A/D converter with 16-bit resolution. Access to the
channels is managed by the control processor. The latter is also where the measured values are ready to be
”fetched” by the main processor via the iBus which in the further process evaluates, corrects them with the individual
calibration data, and transmits them with an accuracy of up to 10 bits to all other components via the iBus and the
CAN-buses.
4.4 The SA655 plug-in module with digital inputs and/or digital outputs
For added functionalities or where only simple, but low-cost digital inputs are required, users can choose the SA655
plug-in modules.
The SA655-1.G plug-in module provides four digital inputs which, set by soldering bridges, scan the respective
external switching contact, galvanically bonded to the internal 24 V or volt-free and, consequently, driven by an
external voltage source. If the switching contact is fitted with a 22kOhm-resistor, the leads to the switching contact
are also monitored for integrity.
Channel EEPROM
Select
The SA655-2.G plug-in-module is equipped with four relay outputs with volt-free contacts which are set by soldering
bridges for NCC or NOC working. It is important to note the maximum switching voltages and currents shown in the
technical data!
Channel EEPROM
Select
The internal combination with the respective input enables the user to monitor the connected loads, such as a
multiplier or amplifier relay, for integrity of the leads.
The SA655-3.G plug-in-module is equipped with four volt-free, short-circuit-protected semi-conductor switches rated
for maximum switching currents up to 120mA. The integrity monitoring function operates as described for the
SA655-2.G. The semi-conductor switches are advantageous where fast and frequent switching sequences occur,
such as with two-point controllers, etc.
The EEPROM of the circuit carries the information for identification and the soldering jumper data.
The voltage values to be set (0…2…10V) or current values (0…4…20mA) are transmitted periodically from the
control processor to the 4 D/A converters and remain stored there until the next overwriting cycle. The sources are
protected against reverse voltages up to a maximum of ±40 Volts.
