TITLE: FATAL VEHICLE CRASH

On Sunday, July 2nd, 2023, at approximately 1:59AM, the Ozaukee County Dispatch Center was notified
of a possible car crash through an automated phone crash detection notification. Mequon Police and the
Southern Ozaukee Fire Department were dispatched and responded to the 9800 block of N River Road
in Mequon.

Upon arrival, officers located a single vehicle crash with severe damage. It was determined the vehicle
was traveling northbound on N River Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating
a curve; causing the vehicle to cross the center line and strike a tree on the west side of the roadway.

Officers located a critically injured juvenile passenger in the vehicle. Life saving measures were
provided by Mequon officers and Southern Ozaukee Fire Department personnel. The juvenile
subsequently died of their injuries on scene.

Officers located the driver, an 18-year-old Mequon man, a short distance from the vehicle walking on
the roadway. The driver was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for observation and
treatment of suspected minor injuries.

The Mequon/Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Unit was contacted and is investigating the crash.
The Thiensville Police Department, Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office, River Hills Police Department,
and Southern Ozaukee Fire Department all assisted.

The driver is currently in custody at the Ozaukee County Jail. Charges are being forwarded to the
Ozaukee County District Attorney’s Office for the driver. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in
the crash.
