MATHS - 8th MAY POLYNOMIALS - Assignment

1. The document discusses polynomials and parabolas. It provides examples of parabolic shapes and discusses properties of quadratic polynomials including their zeros. 2. Questions are provided about finding zeros of polynomials given information about the polynomials as well as properties of parabolas, circles, and tangents. Proofs of geometric properties are also requested. 3. Additional questions involve modeling projectile motion and height over time using quadratic polynomials and finding polynomial expressions based on given information about their zeros.

ASSIGNMENT 3 - POLYNOMIALS

SECTION C
1 If 1 and –2 are the zeroes of the polynomial (x3 – 4x2 – 7x + 10), find its third zero.
2 The below pictures are few natural examples of parabolic shape which is represented by a quadratic
polynomial. A parabolic arch is an arch in the shape of a parabola. In structures, their curve represents an
efficient method of load, and so can be found in bridges and in architecture in a variety of forms.

i) If the roots of the quadratic polynomial are equal, then write the condition?
1
ii) If  and are the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial 2x2 – x + 8k, then find k?

iii) Write the quadratic polynomial whose sum of the roots is –p and product of the roots is P ?
(OR)
In the standard form of quadratic polynomial ax2 + bx + c, what are a, b, c?
3 "The tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact". Prove it.

4 Basketball and soccer are played with a spherical ball. Even though an athlete dribbles the ball inboth sports,
a basketball player uses his hands and a soccer player uses his feet. Usually, soccer isplayed outdoors on a
large field and basketball is played indoor on a court made out of wood. Theprojectile (path traced) of soccer
ball and basketball are in the form of parabola representing quadratic polynomial.

i) What is the shape of the path traced shown?
ii) Write the condition if the graph of parabola open upwards?
iii) Write the zeroes in the above shown graph?

(OR)
What will be the expression of the polynomial?
5 Two tangents TP and TQ are drawn to a circle with centre 'O' from an external point T. Provethat
PTQ  2 OPQ .

6 Find the quadratic polynomial, the sum and product of whose zeroes are –3 and 2 respectively. Hence
find the zeroes.
7 The figure given alongside shows the path of a diver, when she takes a jump from the diving board.
Clearly it is a parabola. Annie was standing on a diving board, 48 feet above the water level. She took a
dive into the pool. Her height (in feet) above the water level at any time ‘t’ inseconds is given by the
polynomial h(t) such that h(t) = – 16t² + 8t + k.

i) What is the value of k?

ii) At what time will she touch the water in the pool?
iii) If the zeroes of the polynomial r(t) = –12t2 + (k – 3)t + 48 are negative of each other, then find k?
(OR)
A polynomial q(t) with sum of zeroes as 1 and product as –6 is modeling Anu’s height in feet above the
water at any time t (in seconds). Then find q(t)
8 "The tangent at any point of a circle is perpendicular to the radius through the point of contact". Prove it.

9 Find the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial 6x2 + x – 2 and verify the relationship between the zeroes
and the coefficients.
10 A car moves on a highway. The path it traces is given below :

B
x' A C x
-3 -1 2E 5

y'

Based on the above information, answer the following questions :

i) What is the shape of the curve EFG?
ii) What is the distance between C and G?
iii) If the curve ABC is represented by the polynomial –(x2 + 4x + 3). Then what are its zeroes?
(OR)
How many number of zeroes of the polynomial representing the whole curve?
11 Prove that, " The lengths of tangents drawn from an external point to a circle are equal".
1 3
12 Show that and are the zeroes of the polynomial 4x2 + 4x – 3 and verify the relationship between
2 2
zeroes and co-efficients of polynomial.

SECTION D

1 If  and  are the zeroes of the polynomial p(x) = 2x2 + 5x + k satisfying the relation,
21
2 2    , then find the value of k.
4

2 If  and  are the zeros of the polynomial 6y2 – 7y + 2, find a quadratic polynomial whose zeros
1 1
are and .
a b
3 Show that 3 is a zero of the polynomial 2x3 – x2 – 13x – 6. Hence find all the zeroes of this
polynomial.
4 For what value of k, –7 is the zero of the polynomial 2x2 + 11x + (6k – 3)? Also, find the other zero of the
polynomial.
