Form 2 Topic Proposal Format

The document is a topic proposal form submitted by 5 students for their Bachelor of Science in Physical Education program. They propose assessing the effects of social media usage on self-esteem and peer relationships among their fellow Physical Education students. The proposal provides background on social media and its potential impacts. It outlines the study's objectives and research methodology. A theoretical framework using the triangular theory of self is presented to conceptualize how the self is represented privately, publicly on social media, and through others' inferences. The proposal requires approval from an evaluation committee.

on Self- Esteem and Peer Relationships
among Bachelor of Science in Physical
Education students in Colegio ng
Lungsod ng Batangas.

Background of the Proposed Topic

Social media is a term that refers to websites and applications that allow
people to create and share information, ideas, interests, and other forms of expression
through virtual communities and networks. The study aims to assess the effects of
social media usage on self-esteem and peer relationship among Bachelor in Physical

both positive and negative ways, depending on how people use it and what kind of
feedback they receive. Social media worsens emotions of low self-esteem, peer
relationship loneliness, and stress, while raising rates of depression, anxiety and
suicidal. To gather the data for this study, the researcher will conduct survey
questionnaires to the Bachelor of Physical Education who use any kind of social media.

esteem and peer relationship and to know what are the things on how it can be solve.

THEORETICALFRAMEWORK

TRIANGULAR THEORY
According to the triangular theory by (Stone and Wang 2019), the term
"represented self" refers to a person's subjective self-representations, which include
representations of autobiographical experiences and are "located" in the person's own
mind and brain. However, the portrayed self is built and rooted in the sociocultural
context, and in the age of social media, it is externalized and outsourced to cyberspace,
where the user selectively processes, encodes, and transmits information about
themselves online. When compared to earlier generations, one of the largest
distinctions in the lives of today's teenagers and young adults is how much more time
they spend communicating with their peers online, primarily through social media.
According to some specialists, the rise in depressive disorders is proof that the
interactions people make online through social media are less emotionally fulfilling and
make them feel socially isolated.

Triangular theory of self to characterize the sense of self-hood in the era of social
media. According to the theory, the self in the social media era comprises the
represented self that is located in the private mind of the person, the registered self that
is presented on social media platforms, and the inferred self that is constructed by the
virtual audience. The three components of the self interact in dynamic ways to
constitute a sense of self-hood and identity specific to the social media era.

Autobiographical memory plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of

these components. The triangular theory of self introduces new ways to understand and
study memory and self in a digitally mediated world.

The dynamic characteristics of the self are accentuated in the digitally mediated
modern society (Wang 2013). According to the triangular theory, the self in the social
media era is composed of three types of representations: the represented self, the
registered self, and the inferred self. The represented self is the characteristics, roles,
and experiences of oneself as perceived and encoded by the person who acts as an
agentic experiencer and knower. The registered self is the characteristics, roles, and
experiences of the person as shared on social media. The inferred self is the
characteristics, roles, and experiences of the person as viewed and interpreted by the
virtual audience.

This theory is relevant to this study in a way of social media usage that
conceptualizes the self as represented in the private mind of the person, the public
sphere of social media platforms, and the trans-active mind of the virtual audience. the
construction of the inferred self is a collective process in which information about the
person is perceived, negotiated, integrated, and updated through the trans-active mind
of the virtual community. The inferred self and the audience’s reactions to the online
posts further shape the sense of self of the person as well as his or her subsequent
engagement with social media and the audience.
