Functions of the Directorate:
i) Implementation of the Intellectual Property Management Policy;
ii) Identification and assessment of the university IP assets; iii) Guiding faculty/staff, students and associates of the university on acquisition of IP protection for their inventions or works; iv) Advising the Board on the marketability and Patentability of the invention or innovation disclosed for consideration; v) Recommend amendments to the IP Management Policy to the Board; vi) Establish guidelines, procedures and prepare agreements for sharing of information and distribution of materials relating to MTA; vii) Create awareness through seminars, conferences, symposia, colloquia, workshops, encouragement of each faculty/college/division/unit of the university to incorporate IP as one of the compulsories/elective courses in the curriculum, encouragement of the development of IP awareness promotion materials, entering into strategic partnership with appropriate institutions for the promotion of IP and any other appropriate means as circumstances dictates; viii) Liaison with the National IP Offices for purposes of intellectual property protection; ix) Management of the day-to-day activities of the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC); x) Maintaining an IP assets inventory/register; xi) Establish and maintain procedures to guide IP management from the time an invention is generated to commercialization of the IPRs; xii) Ensure compliance with IP provisions of the university sponsored research grants and contracts; xiii) Carry out IP audit annually; xiv) Perform initial assessment of the disclosures submitted to the university to determine the subsequent rights thereof; xv) Ensure that required agreements regarding the administration of IP in which the university has a proprietary interest, and consequent rights of all parties concerned, are properly executed; xvi) Review funding and service level agreement with reference to IPRs and where appropriate, negotiate agreements relating to IP ownership prior to signing, xvii) Provide services that facilitate the management, evaluation, protection, marketing and commercialization of the university IP through internal and/or external resources including, but not limited to, patent management agents, consultants and lawyers; xviii) Helping researchers and students attain entrepreneurial skills and mindset, xix) Defining strategies for technology transfer; xx) Providing a channel through which companies, research organizations and government agencies can access the knowledge, expertise and technologies found in the university; xxi) Initiating and promoting technology transfer and commercialization of the university’s Intellectual Property assets in view of providing fair and reasonable economic returns to faculty/staff and the university; xxii) Initiating and promoting commercialization of expertise/skills/knowhow found in the university in view of providing fair and reasonable economic returns to faculty/staff and the university; xxiii) Advising and providing support to students, staff and associates of the university regarding the IP policy through continuous education and sensitization programs; xxiv) Work with external organizations to ensure effective management and exploitation of IP for purposes of income generation, technology transfer and stimulation of local and regional economic growth; xxv) Establish and maintain procedures for commercialization of IPRs; xxvi) Seeking for commercial and financial partners (Venture capital funds etc.); xxvii) Marketing the University’s research potential; xxviii) Fielding inquiries from industry; xxix) Seeking jobs, internships and external attachment placements for students; xxx) Seeking apprenticeship/Industrial attachment placements for staff; xxxi) Partnering researchers with industry and government for collaborative research and development; xxxii) Organizing visits to university’s laboratories by outsiders interested in collaborative research or contract research; xxxiii) Linking the university with the JKUAT Industrial and Technology Park/Industries; xxxiv) Maintaining a register/directory of collaborators. xxxv) Coordination of incubation/commercialization activities in collaboration with other relevant units of the university as shown in annex I; xxxvi) Maintaining accurate and transparent documentation of IP expenses for a particular IP and ensuring that all IP Expenses incurred have been recovered; and xxxvii) Perform such other responsibilities that may be required to comply with laws with regard to the university IPRs and IP Management policy.
