Connecting Rod Bolts
DE_45H and_S/USOH
Dear Sirs,
On engines of the above type some cases of fretting on the guide piece of the
connecting rod bolts, with risk of a reduction in the fatigue strength for the
bolt material, have been reported.
To counteract this we recommend part of the guide piece on the connecting
rod bolt to be machined away.
When the connecting rod is dismantled for overhaul, we recommend machining
of the bolts (shown on the enclosed drawings) as follows :
Type Tightening Drawing No.
DE 45H Torque Spanner 3-34 31 98-4
DE 45H Hydraulic 3-34 3199-6
DE S/US0H = Hydraulic 2-34 02 07-7
Machine-turn the guide piece on a length of 40 mm to the smallest diameter on
the bolt.
imultaneously with this we recommend relieving the first thread on the nut
in order to reduce the stress concentration at the bottom of the thread on the
face of the nut.
We draw your attention to the necessity of polishing the machined areas so that
the roughness is at least as fine as the rest of the bolt and so that no sharp edges
or scratches are present.
Yours faithfully,
B&W MARINE SERVICE
