Problem Statement
An investigation into the impact of ICT on increased motivation and achievement of students at
Variables
Independent- ICT
Hypothesis
ICT has a positive impact on students' motivation and achievement at York Castle sixth form.
Research Questions
How much technology is used in the teaching and learning process at York Castle High School?
Relevance of Topic
technology (IT) that stresses the role of unified communications and the integration of
storage and audiovisual, that enable users to access, store, transmit, understand, and manipulate
information. Schools use a diverse set of ICT tools to communicate, create, disseminate, store,
and manage information. In some contexts, ICT has also become integral to the teaching-
learning interaction, through such approaches as replacing chalkboards with interactive digital
whiteboards, using students’ own smartphones or other devices for learning during class time,
and the “flipped classroom” model where students watch lectures at home on the computer and
use classroom time for more interactive exercises. With the introduction of ICT in the learning
system it is less complex for both teacher and students, brings about more communication of
educational information. ICT is a very important topic to study, as it helps to acquire knowledge
Statement of problem
The study will be conducted at the York castle high school, Browns town, Jamaica to investigate
into the impact of ICT on increased motivation and achievement of students. Respondents will
be chosen from several students at the sixth form level to obtain different opinions to gather
accurate information. The study will be conducted on the impact of emerging technologies and
Educational Value
This research will be beneficial to a wide audience of people but specifically to persons
considering making improvements to the education system, they will be informed about how
York Castle children are impacted by ICT and how it increases their motivation and also their
Today technology has marvelously infused itself into everyone's daily lives. It is a potent tool
that has greatly altered schooling. As such, many teachers incorporated technology into their
lessons with the aim of motivating their students and making it easier to reach academic
achievement.
New England Charter School with a population of 348. The study concluded that most students
felt that technology usage in the classroom was motivating, as well as having the added benefit
of allowing students of all levels (learning impaired to gifted and talented) access
to education at the school (NECS). The research explained that the same devices that are
familiar to the students, when used in the classroom to assist and support, help motivate and
engage the students. A student who can access the curriculum on an individual basis, and is
excited and motivated to learn, will learn better, leading to better engagement in learning
activities.
motivation and performance of secondary school students in Ikorodu Local Government Area of
Lagos State. The results showed that there was a significant impact on students’ academic
performance. The researcher argued that the finding was due to the fact that when teachers and
quality of lesson delivery and students’ mastery which eventually translates to improved
students’ academic motivation. The researcher argued that it was because technology provides
instant feedback with instructional assistance. Thus, technology must be made relevant and
useful in order for teachers to expect increased motivation among their students, especially those
students who have special needs and require more attention from their teachers.
Kreutz,J and Rhodin,N (2016) released a paper about a study conducted in Sweden on (The
influence of ICT on learners’ motivation towards learning English.) which shows a similar
conclusion when compared to the study by James Francis (2017). From their study they
concluded that most learners have a positive view on incorporating and using technology in
school. They believe that ICT technology in the classroom is beneficial for learning because it is
a motivational tool for learners. They concluded that the students believe it is fun when the
teacher uses ICT, but it is even more fun when they use computers and tablets themselves.
However, A study done by Bingimlas,K. A. (2009) on the topic (Barriers to the Successful
Integration of ICT in Teaching and Learning Environment) shows a different conclusion from
the articles mentioned above. The findings of this study indicated that teachers have a strong
desire for the integration of ICT into education but that they encountered many barriers to it. The
major barriers were lack of confidence, lack of competence, and lack of access to resources. The
researcher explained that confidence, competence and accessibility have been found to be critical
components for technology integration in schools, ICT resources including software and
hardware, effective professional development, sufficient time, and technical support need to be
explained that some challenges of integrating technology in the classroom involve students
misusing technology, teacher lack of knowledge and understanding of how to use technology, or
discomfort with using it, keeping students safe online, cost of new technology and keeping up
with changes.
