PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF SICK LINE SHED AT
DORNAKAL JUNCTION.
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Client decided to estimate the ultimate bearing pressure of the soil by conducting
plate load test. Results of plate load test will show load settlement behavior of Soil. M/s
Hyderabad test labs & Engineering services LLP. was entrusted with work of conducting
tests in field. M/s Hyderabad test labs & Engineering services LLP carried out fieldwork of
two tests on August 4th, 2019.
This report has been prepared by M/s Hyderabad test labs & Engineering services
LLP. Report covers data collected in fieldwork of three tests. Report is limited to
defining the load-deformation characteristics. It does not involve any specialist design
for any subsurface component or visits by the undersigned to confirm any of the design
parameters.

PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF SICK LINE SHED AT
DORNAKAL JUNCTION.
Client decided to carry out plate load tests to determine load settlement
behaviour of sub base soil. This information will be used to decide suitability of present
sub base for operational use of various equipment loads.
The Plate load Test is conducted at the test location at Dornkal railway station at
the foundation level i.e 3.00 m depth from the existing ground level. The plate load test
was done as per IS : 1888-1982. The size of the plate will be 300 mm x 300 mm x 25
mm thick. The test was conducted on 04-08-2019.
iv) Calibrated dial gauges with 25 mm travel of 0.01 mm least count for
measuring settlement of plate.
vii) Steel pipe and plate of adequate size and length for packing between test
plate and bottom of loading platform.

i) Plate Load Test is conducted strictly as per IS: 1888 – 1979.
ii) Test was carried out at below the existing ground level.
iii) Test plate is placed over a fine sand layer of 5 mm thick, so that the plate is
perfectly levelled at the centre of pit. Test plate is placed in such manner
that it coincides with the centre of loading platform. Hydraulic jack is
centrally placed over the plate.
IV. In this type of test, compression load is applied to the top of bearing plate
by means of a hydraulic jack against steel joist and settlement is recorded
by suitably positioned dial gauges. A minimum seating load 70 gm/cm2 of
plate area will be applied and removed before starting of the test.
V. Test will be carried out by applying increments of load, each increment
being of about 20% of estimated ultimate bearing capacity. Settlement will
be recorded with minimum 2 dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity and
normally held by independent datum bars resting on immovable supports
for each increment of loading after standard time intervals. Each load
increment will be kept for not less than one hour. Each load is maintained
constant until the rate of settlement is less than 0.02 mm/min in case of
sand. In case of clay, the load is maintained until about 70% to 80% of
probable ultimate settlement at that stage is reached. The next increment
will then be applied, and the observation will be repeated.
VI. Failure in test is deemed to be reached if one of the following stages is
attained:
VII. a) Settlement becomes progressive, indicating shear failure.
b) Applied pressure exceeds three times the allowable pressure.

The test results are tabulated in table No.1,2 & 3 and respective load v/s
settlement curves.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS

3.2
Since distinct shear failure has not occurred, the final load is taken as ultimate load 43 t.
Hence Safe bearing pressure of 15 T/m2 with factor of safety 2.5 is recommended.
