MdE - Maréchal d'Empire In France existed a notional hierarchy of nobility titles.
GdD - Général de Division An edict of 1575, rarely enforced, established a minimum
GdB - Général de Brigade size and income for the land to which the created title
Col. - Colonel was attached, thus establishing a hierarchy :
Mjr. - Major - duc (duke)
ChdB - Chef de Bataillon - marquis (marquis)
ChdE - Chef de Escadron - comte (earl)
Cpt. - Capitaine - vicomte (viscount)
Ltn. - Lieutenant - baron (baron)

btns. - battalions This removed the legal foundation of titles. When Napoleon
sq. - squadrons brought back titles in 1804-08, he did not restore feudalism.
Inf. Reg. - Infantry Regiment He did try to give titles a landed basis, by laying down as
Hus. Reg. - Hussar Regiment rule that a title, to become hereditary, had to be formally
H.Chas. Reg. - Horse Chasseur Regiment attached to a land endowment called a "majorat", whose contents
Lan. Reg. - Lancer Regiment had to be provided by the title-holder, and whose inheritance
