SCHOOL OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND INFORMATICS

TEST (28/7/2022)
Course: Probability, Statistics, and Random Signals (MI2036). Time: 90 minutes

Question 1 Suppose that 15 cards are selected at random from a regular deck of 52 playing
cards.
(a) If it is known that one ace has been selected, what is the probability that at least two aces
have been selected?
(b) If it is known that the ace of hearts has been selected, what is the probability that at least
two aces have been selected?

Question 2 Box A contains 2 red balls and 2 white balls; Box B contains 3 red balls and 1
white ball. Take randomly 2 balls from box A and put them into box B. Then, take randomly
2 balls from box B and put them into box A. Let X be the number of white balls present in
boxe A after the transfer is complete, find the probability mass function of X .

Question 3 The probability density function

( of X has form
kx, if 0 ≤ x ≤ 1,
fX (x) =
0, otherwise.
Let (
X, if 0 ≤ x ≤ 1/2,
g(X) =
1/2, if X > 1/2.

(a) Find the constant k .

(b) Find the cumulative distribution function for Y = g(X).
(c) Find E(Y ).

Question 4 Suppose that a person’s score X on a mathematics aptitude test is a number

between 0 and 1, and that his score Y on a music aptitude test is a number between 0 and 1.
Suppose further that in the population of a college students in the HUST, the scores X and Y
are distributed according to the following
( joint probability density function
c(3x + 2y), 0 < x < 1, 0 < y < 1,
fX,Y (x, y) =
0, otherwise.
(a) Find the marginal density function fX (x) for X .
(b) Find E(Y |X = x).
(c) If a student’s score on the mathematics test is 0.5, what is the probability that his score
on the music test will be greater than 0.9?

Question 5 The noise voltage in a radar detection system is a standard normal random
variable, N . When a target is present, the received signal is X = 5 + N volts. Otherwise, the
received signal is X = N volts. Periodically, the detector performs a binary hypothesis test
with H0 as the hypothesis no target and H1 as the hypothesis target present. Based on X ,
(a) Design a maximum a posteriori probability test.
(b) Calculate the alarm PFA , miss PMISS , and total error probabilities PERR .
