Design

The document discusses the conceptual design of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and a multi-role aerial refueling aircraft. Some key points are: 1) The UAV design had long wings with a high aspect ratio to enable better control and lift with less thrust. Maintenance costs were also low. 2) The multi-role aircraft could refuel up to 18 other aircraft in a single flight, transport 150 patients or cargo, and had a maximum endurance of 15 hours. 3) Conducting aerodynamics and stability analysis to determine specifications like static margin was the most challenging part of the project.

If I was a boss of an aircraft company, I would accept the conceptual design of my team

because of the design specifications such as wing load and configuration. The wing load would

enable the UAE to achieve high speeds. There were longer wings with a higher aspect ratio in the

UAV. The longer wings would create the same lift with less thrust. They would enable better

lateral control. The long wings would also produce less lift. They would have less downwash on

the tail, to make it more effective.

The manufacturing and fuel costs of the UAV were low. The UAV design would not be

costly to implement because maintenance costs were also low. The main wing incidence angle

was 2 degrees, elevator incidence angle -5 degrees while the wing dihedral angle was 1 degree.

The wing dihedral angle would give lateral stability to the aircraft. Since the wing dihedral angle

was only 1 degree, it would not reduce the rolling controllability.

The tail configuration of the UAV was simple. It would perform functions such as trim,

control and stability efficiently. The tail would help to generate aerodynamic force that would

trim the aircraft longitudinally. The UAV would be able to perform the anti-submarine

operations. It would also have positive static stability. The stability analysis showed that the

aircraft would return to its initial attitude whenever it is disturbed.

The conceptual design that I liked the most was the “multi-role aerial refueling aircraft.”

The aircraft would have a maximum endurance of 15 hours and a maximum payload of 55 tons.

It would perform its role of refueling other aircrafts efficiently. The static margin of the aircraft

showed that it would be stable. The aircraft would be stable in its plane of symmetry. The

aircraft would be fuel efficient because of its endurance.

The multi-role aerial refueling aircraft did not have high operating costs. The cost of the

aircraft was not high. The aircraft would refuel up to 18 aircrafts in a single flight. It would also

be able to transport 150 patients. The payload of the aircraft would enable it to transport a lot of

cargo. The aircraft mass distribution would contribute to dynamic and static stability.

The most challenging part during the project was conducting aerodynamics and stability

analysis. it was challenging to determine the lateral stability and static margin of the aircrafts.

Designing the aircraft to ensure that it would perform the intended function well was difficult. It

was challenging to determine the design specifications that would enable the aircraft to perform

various functions properly.

My contribution to the team was conducting cost analysis. I conducted cost analyses to

determine the fuel cost of the aircraft, manufacture cost, engine maintenance and system

maintenance. the manufacture cost was determined by conducting research about various

materials that would be used in the aircraft. The fuel cost was also determined by researching

about the fuel costs and determining the fuel consumption of the aircraft. If I was to choose the

VIP, I would choose the one who came up with the design specifications.
