valve (1) and the parking brake control valve (2) is now electronically controlled. The
brake/pilot pump (3) is a variable displacement pump that replaces the fixed
displacement pump on the H Series machines. The 836K Landfill Compactor is
equipped with only front service brakes and a front brake accumulator.

The brake/pilot pump is a variable displacement piston pump that provides oil to the
brake combination valve.

The brake combination valve maintains the pressure in the brake accumulators and
is equipped with a pressure reducing valve and a sequence valve. The pressure
reducing valve decreases the oil pressure in the brake circuit. The decreased
oil pressure is used for the pilot oil supply in the implement and steering pilot
systems (4). The sequence valve controls the oil flow from the brake/pilot pump to
the CEM fan motor (5) on the 836K Highly Regulated Countries (HRC) model.

NOTE: The sequence valve has no function on the 988K, the 834K, and the
836K Lesser Regulated Countries (LRC) model, since these machines are not
equipped with the CEM fan motor.

6_3 6_4
Brake/Pilot Pump

• Identify the brake/pilot pump. The brake/pilot pump is a variable displacement pump that provides oil to the brake
combination valve and pilot oil to the steering and implement hydraulic systems, via
the brake combination valve. The brake/pilot pump also provides oil to the autolube
system on the 988K. The brake/pilot pump (1) is attached to the left rear of the pump
drive (2) on the 988K machine. The brake/pilot pump (3) is attached to the right rear
of the pump drive (4) on the 834K and 836K machines The brake/pilot pump replaces
the fixed displacement pump on the H Series machines.

The pump compensator valve (5) controls the oil flow to the brake combination valve.
When pressure in the brake system is less than approximately 16000 ± 350 kPa
(2,320 ± 50 psi), the compensator valve keeps the swashplate at maximum angle.
The pump piston stroke is longest and pump displacement is maximum. As the brake
system pressure increases above 16000 ± 350 kPa (2,320 ± 50 psi) the pressure
compensator decreases the angle of the swashplate and the pump displacement.
The amount of oil per pump revolution is decreased to the amount needed to maintain
the system pressure at 16000 ± 350 kPa (2,320 ± 50 psi).

The cover has been removed in this image.

Oil from the brake/pilot pump flows through the brake oil filter (1) to the brake
combination valve (2). The brake combination valve replaces the brake charging
valve. The brake combination valve allows oil to flow to the brake accumulators (3)
and to the service brake valve. The 836K is equipped with only one accumulator
for the front brakes. When the engine is running, the accumulators assist in
supplying pressurized oil to the service brake valve. If the engine stops or the
brake/pilot pump fails, the accumulators provide a temporary emergency oil supply
for braking. The nitrogen accumulator charging valves are located on the bottom of
the accumulators.

The brake oil filter contains a filter bypass switch (4), which informs the Implement
ECM if the brake oil filter is restricted.

NOTE: The 836K service brake valve is similar, but only contains one brake
spool which directs oil to only the front brakes.

When the brake pedal is released (left view), the oil passages from the front
accumulator (1) and rear accumulator (2) to the brakes are closed, and the passages
from the brakes to the tank (3) are opened. Oil in the rear brakes (4) and front
brakes (5) flows through the respective brake spools to the tank. Spring force at the
bottom of the lower spool (6) moves the brake spools up.

When the operator depresses either brake pedal (right view), the piston (7) contacts
the upper springs (8), which move both the upper spool (9) and lower spool down.
The brake spools close the passages to the tank and open the passages from the two
accumulators. The oil from the rear accumulator flows through the rear brake spool
to ENGAGE the rear brakes and to fill the chamber between the lower and upper
spool. The oil from the front accumulator flows through the lower brake spool to
ENGAGE the front brakes and to fill the chamber at the bottom of the lower spool.

Parking Brake Valve

• Identify the parking brake valve. The parking brake control valve (1) is located on top of the frame, below the cab. The
parking brake control valve directs oil flow to the parking brake. When the parking
brake switch in the cab is turned ON, the Power Train ECM de-energizes the parking
brake solenoid (2). The solenoid blocks oil to the spool inside the parking brake
valve. Spring force moves the spool, which allows the oil in the parking brake to flow
to the tank and spring force engages the parking brake.

When the parking brake switch in the cab is turned OFF, the Power Train ECM
energizes the parking brake solenoid. The solenoid directs oil to the spool inside the
parking brake valve. The spool moves and directs oil to release the parking brake.

Also shown in this view is the parking brake pressure sensor. The parking brake
pressure sensor (3) sends a signal to the Power Train ECM indicating parking brake
pressure.

Parking Brake

• Identify the parking brake The spring engaged, hydraulically released, multiple disc parking brake is bolted to
components. the front of the output transfer gear case. The brake discs are splined to the hub,
which turns with the drive shaft. The plates are splined to the park brake housing,
which is held with bolts (1) anchored to the bearing cage (2).

When the parking brake is released, brake system oil acts against the piston, which
moves a plate (3) outward against spring force. With the spring force removed, the
discs, the hub, and the front drive shaft are allowed to rotate.

When the parking brake is depressed, brake system oil in the parking brake flows to
the tank. Spring force moves the nonrotating plates against the turning discs, which
are splined to the hub. The friction between the discs and plates causes the hub to
reduce speed or to stop.

If the brake/pilot pump fails or hydraulic oil flow stops, the parking brake can be
manually released to move the machine. To manually release the parking brake,
install brake release bolts (4) in the three brake release holes (5) spaced 120 degrees
apart. Tighten the bolts, which forces the plate outward against spring force. With
spring force removed, the discs, the hub, and the front drive shaft are allowed to
rotate. When not in use, the bolts are stored in the location shown in this view.

check valve to the inverse shuttle valve (7). The relief valve limits the maximum
pressure for the brake system. The pressure reducing valve decreases the brake
oil pressure, which is used as the pilot oil supply for the implement and steering
systems (8). The sequence valve directs oil from the brake/pilot pump to the Clean

NOTE: The sequence valve has no function on the 988K, the 834K, and the
836K LRC model, since these machines are not equipped with the CEM fan

In the 988K/834K/836K machines, the front brake accumulator (9) and rear
brake accumulator (10) are continuously charged when the engine is running.
The accumulators will continue to charge until the oil pressure increases to
16000 ± 350 kPa (2,320 ± 50 psi), which is the brake/pilot pump cutoff pressure. At
cutoff pressure, the brake/pilot pump will destroke. When the brake circuit pressure
decreases to approximately 10600 kPa (1535 psi), the brake accumulator pressure
sensor (11) will send a signal to the Power Train ECM.

engaged. The 836K brake hydraulic system operates the same as the 988K/834K brake
hydraulic system, but has only a front brake accumulator (1) to provide oil to the front
service brakes (2). The service brake valve (3) has only one spool, which directs oil
to the front service brakes when the right brake pedal (4) or the left brake pedal (5)

circuit decreases below approximately 13800 kPa (2000 psi), the sequence valve will
block oil flow to the CEM fan motor and give priority to the brake circuit to ensure the
brake accumulators are charged.

NOTE: The CEM fan motor is not installed on the 836K LRC model.

Fan System Components

• Identify the fan system The image above shows the location of the fan system components on the 988K
components. Wheel Loader. The 834K and 836K fan system component locations are similar. The
988K/834K/836K machines are equipped with an on-demand hydraulic fan system.
The on-demand control fan system uses a variable displacement hydraulic fan
pump (1), which provides oil flow to the hydraulic fan motor (2). The hydraulic fan
motor rotates the fan blades to move the air through the radiator package. The oil
from the hydraulic fan motor then flows through the oil cooler (3) and return oil
filter (4) to the hydraulic tank. Case drain oil from the fan pump and fan motor flows
though the fan pump and motor case drain oil filter (5).

In an on demand fan system, the fan speed will increase or decrease to provide
the required amount of cooling. During light usage, the fan system will maintain a
minimum fan speed. During heavy usage or high ambient temperatures, the fan
system will supply the fan speed that is required to cool the machine fluids (hydraulic
oil, engine coolant). Also, the fan system cools the air that is flowing through the Air
to Air Aftercooler (ATAAC).

NOTE: The 836K is equipped with a reversing fan system.

The Engine ECM processes the input signals and sends corresponding output
signals to the fan solenoid (7) to control the fan speed.

The following temperatures must be met to maintain the fan system at minimum fan
speed:

• Inlet air manifold temperature below 52°C (126°F)

• Hydraulic oil temperature below 87°C (189°F)
• Coolant temperature below 92°C (198°F)

When a sensor reads a temperature above the key target temperature, the Engine
ECM interprets a demand for additional cooling. The Engine ECM sends a reduced
amount of current to the solenoid valve and the pump starts to upstroke.

988K/834K fan hydraulic system hydraulic system. The 836K fan hydraulic system is similar, but is also equipped with

When the engine is running, the fan pump (1) draws oil from the hydraulic tank and
sends the oil to the fan solenoid valve (2), the flow control valve (3), and to the fan
motor (4). The fan motor turns the cooling fan. Oil from the fan motor flows through
the hydraulic oil cooler (5) and the return oil filter (6) to the tank.

The fan solenoid controls the signal oil to the flow control valve. When a sensor
reads a temperature above the key target temperature, the Engine ECM sends a
reduced current to the fan solenoid for additional cooling. The solenoid shifts, which
blocks pump oil flow to the tank. The oil pressure on the right side of the flow control
valve increases, which shifts the flow control spool to the left. Oil at the actuator
piston (7) flows to the tank. The actuator piston moves to the right and the fan pump
upstrokes to increase the pump oil flow.

As one or more of the key target temperatures continues to increase, the Engine
ECM will continue to decrease the current sent to the solenoid valve, which will
cause the pump to increase flow.

ECM will continue to increase the current that is sent to the solenoid valve, which will
cause the pump to decrease flow.

Reversing Fan Valve (836K)

• Identify the reversing fan valve The reversing fan will REVERSE the direction of the cooling fan to purge debris
components. trapped in the radiator grill. The auto reversing fan automatically REVERSES the
cooling fan for 20 seconds after every 20 minute interval.

The reversing fan switch (1) in the cab provides a manual override that initiates the
purge cycle when the engine is running. Pressing and releasing the top of the switch
manually activates the reversing fan and resets the timer for the automatic purge
cycle.

NOTE: The cooling fan may not automatically reverse when the parking brake is
applied. Pressing the reversing fan switch will override this feature.

The reversing fan valve (2) is located on the inside of the right frame rail near the rear
of the machine and controls the direction of oil flow to the fan motor. The reversing
fan valve components are:

• Diverter valve (3)

• Crossover relief valves (4)
• Reversing solenoid (5)
• Bypass solenoid (6)

Oil from the brake combination valve (3), via a pressure reducing valve (4), provides
the pilot oil supply to the reversing solenoid (5). In the FORWARD direction, the
reversing solenoid is de-energized, which blocks pilot oil from flowing to the top of
the diverter valve (6). Spring force moves the diverter valve up and oil from the fan
pump (7) flows to the fan motor (8), which turns the fan motor in the FORWARD
direction. Motor drain oil flows through the diverter valve and through the oil
cooler (9) and return oil filter (10) to the tank.

The fan bypass solenoid (11) will direct fan pump oil to the tank when energized by
the Engine ECM.
