Diesel, Gas Turbine, and Combied Cycle Power Plant
Diesel, Gas Turbine, and Combied Cycle Power Plant
electricity. The diesel engine serves as the primary mover, referred to as a diesel power
plant.
A combined-cycle power plant is a set of heat engines that transform heat into
mechanical energy. The most widely used form is a combined cycle gas turbine. A similar
concept is employed in marine propulsion, called combined gas and steam plant. It
minimizes fuel consumption by combining two or more thermodynamic cycles.
The windmill was the first turbine to produce helpful work, where compression and no
combustion existed.
Diesel
Rudolf Diesel is most recognized for inventing the diesel engine. His idea occurred in
the late 1800s when the steam engine dominated large industries.
Gas Turbine
Gas turbine was invented in 1930 by Frank Whittle and then patented in 1934.
It was first used for aircraft propulsion in 1942 on Messerschmitt Me262 or
Sturmvogel by Germans during WW2.
And it is most currently used on aircraft and ships using the gas turbine.
Combined Cycle Power Plant
The first recognized combined cycle plant was installed by an Austrian utility NEWAG
at their Korneuburg A plant in Austria in 1961.

Theoretical Background
The diesel engine uses the Diesel cycle, one of automobile engines' most common
thermodynamic cycles.
o Instead of using spark ignition, the diesel engine uses compression ignition.
o Higher compression ratios can be achieved.
o At the start of the compression stroke, there is no fuel in the cylinder.
The gas turbine converts fuels like natural gas to mechanical energy using the Brayton
Cycle.
The combined cycle power plant uses two power cycles: the Joule or Brayton cycle and
the Rankine cycle.
