Analysis Worksheet

PAW is a poetry analysis worksheet that you can give to your students for any poem that they read! This worksheet forces students to
take a closer look at the poems they read and gain a deeper understanding of the author’s use of poetry to communicate his/her
ideas.
Concepts included on the worksheet:
Summarizing literal meaning
Determining poetic form
Identifying rhyme scheme
Identifying sensory images
Determining types of rhyme (internal vs. end rhyme, exact, eye, slant)
Identifying literary devices (similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, allusions, symbolism, hyperbole, and
personification)
Determining the theme of the poem
Giving a personal response

PAW can be used in a whole class discussion of a poem or on an individual level. Keep a stack of these worksheets in a literacy center
along with a copy of different grade level appropriate poems for students to read and interact with during workshop or as an early
finishers activity.

These are also great for a CLOSE reading activity! Read the poem the first time together to get the main “gist” of the poem. Then,
work through the worksheet during a second read to dig deeper. There’s no need to create a separate sheet for each poem you read.
It’s all here!

PAW is created by Martha Hach from “The Owl Spot.” Your purchase entitles you to copy and use this for your single classroom. If
you wish to share with another colleague, either purchase an additional license to share or direct others to my TpT store to purchase
their own. You may not share, copy or upload to a shared server.
