Electrician Demo Plan 5
Electrician Demo Plan 5
I. PREPARATION:
(1) Objectives: (After demonstrating the skill the trainees will be able to)
1. Check the components and equipments.
2. Draw the subtractive and additive polarity Circuit diagram.
3. Construct the circuit.
4. Observe the ammeter and voltmeter reading.
(2) Tools & other requirements: Transformer, AC voltmeter (0-500V), variac, connecting lead, etc.
(3) Introduction:
(a) Review: Transformer, step up, step down transformer.
(b) Motivation: Transformers are employed for widely varying purposes; e.g., to reduce the voltage of
conventional power circuits to operate low-voltage devices, and to raise the voltage from electric
generators so that electric power can be transmitted over long distances.
II. PRESENTATION:
Check the Check the physical and electrical working conditions of the
components components and equipments.

Procedure Information points/ Safety precautions. Hints
Construction of (1) As per circuit diagram, terminals A1 and A2 are marked plus and minus Record the reading
circuit arbitrarily. in Tabular column
(2) Now terminal A1 is connected to one end of secondary winding and a
voltmeter is connected between A2 and other end of secondary winding.
(3) A voltage V3 of suitable value is applied to the high voltage winding.
(4) Measure E1 and E2 by connecting voltmeters V1 and V2 across two
Polarity Test: windings.
(5) If the voltmeter V3 reading, measured in step 3 , is equal to E1 - E2 , then Voltage Ratio:
secondary terminal connected to A1 is +ve and another terminal –ve.
(6) If the voltmeter V3 reading is equal to E1 + E2, then secondary terminal Sr. No. 1 2
connected to A1 is -ve and another terminal +ve.
Reading
(1) Connect one voltmeter on the primary and the other on the secondary for V1
Voltage ratio side, on open circuit. Reading
(2) Note down readings of both voltmeters. for V2
Safety Voltage
(1) All connections should be tight.
Protections Ratio
(2) All steps should be followed carefully.
V2/V1
(3)Readings and calculation should be taken carefully.
(4)Don’t touch the live terminals
III. APPLICATION:
Ask the Trainees to observe and note down the reading for Subtractive and Additive Polarity and
Find out voltage Ratio.
IV. TEST:
Assignment:
1. What is the need for performing polarity test on a transformer?
2. What is the need for performing voltage ratio test on a transformer?
