Torque Converter
SMCS - 3101
S/N - 8LJ1-UP
The torque converter connects the engine to the planetary transmission. This connection between the
engine and the transmission is a hydraulic connection. There is no direct mechanical connection between
the engine and the transmission.
The torque converter uses oil to send torque from the engine to the transmission. When the machine is
working against a load, the torque converter can multiply the torque from the engine. The torque
converter can also send a higher torque to the transmission.

The oil for the operation of the torque converter comes from the transmission. The oil for the operation
of the torque converter also comes from the torque converter scavenge pump. The oil pump is driven by
gear (4) and gear (5). An inlet ratio valve (part of the pressure control valve in the transmission) controls
the maximum oil pressure to the torque converter. An orifice in the outlet passage controls the minimum
oil pressure in the torque converter.
Rotating housing (1) is connected to the engine flywheel with splines of gear (8). Impeller (3) and drive
gear (5) for the oil pump are connected to the rotating housing (1). These components turn with the
engine flywheel at engine speed.
Stator (13) is connected to carrier (11) which is connected to the torque converter cover. The stator (13)
does not turn.
Turbine (10) is connected to the output shaft (9). Drive gear (5) is fastened to the impeller (3). Drive
gear (5) turns gears (4) and (14) for the oil pumps.
Oil from the hydraulic controls of the transmission goes into the torque converter through inlet passage
(6) in carrier (11) .
Impeller (3) turns with rotating housing (1) at engine speed. This makes the oil flow toward the outside
of the impeller (3). The oil then flows around the inside of rotating housing (1) and against the blades of
turbine (10). The oil that hits the turbine blades causes the turbine (10) and the output shaft (9) to turn.
This sends torque through a drive shaft to the planetary transmission.
After the oil hits the turbine blades, the oil flows toward the inside of turbine (10). As oil flows from
turbine (10), the oil moves in a direction that is opposite of the rotation of impeller (3). Stator (13) will
cause the oil to change direction. The oil will then flow back into impeller (3) in the direction of
rotation. This gives an increase to the impeller oil output which gives an increase to the torque output
from turbine (10) .
When there is a great difference between the speeds of rotation of impeller (3) and turbine (10), the

Oil from outlet passage (12) goes through an orifice and to the oil cooler.
