Research Exemplar - Filtration

Filtration separates mixtures based on differences in particle size. The process involves pouring a mixture through a filter, allowing smaller particles like water to pass through while retaining larger particles like sand. This results in two separate substances - the filtrate which passes through the filter and the residue which is collected. Filtration is commonly used to purify water and air by removing insoluble particles and is limited by the potential for clogging and the filtrate still containing some impurities.

Separation Technique 1 Presented by:

Homogenous or Heterogeneous

Which properties does this technique take advantage of?

Filtration is used to separate solids of di erent sizes.

It separates an insoluble solid from a pure liquid or a solution.

Therefore, ltration takes advantage of particle size.

Describe the process of this separation technique.

This process is used to separate substances that have di erent particle sizes. An example is sand and water. If you pour
a mixture of sand and water through a lter, the water particles which are smaller than the sand particles will slip through
the holes. The sand which is bigger will not. You can also use ltration to separate dirt from water to obtain cleaner water.
The water that runs through the lter is called the ltrate and the sand that is removed is called the residue.

Filtration is the process of removing insoluble substances from a solution

What is the expected result when the mixture has been separated with this technique?

There will be two obvious substances at the end - residue and ltrate.

The solids that are too large to pass through the lter paper are known as the residue.

The liquid that remains at the bottom is called the ltrate.

Where is this separation technique used in everyday life?

• Treatment of water uses ltration techniques to remove impurities from the water we drink (think Pura Tap)

• Our kidneys are lters, they lter bad things out of our blood.

• Aircon lters - ltering out impurities to ensure the air is clean

• Vacuum cleaners - lter the dirt through

What are some limitations of this separation technique?

• Needs to be done multiple times to ensure no residue remains (e.g. sand and water separation)

• Can be a long process

• The ltrate is usually not clear

• Cleaning the lter needs to be done otherwise clogging may occur
