Public Health Inspection For Kilimani Primary School

A public health inspection was conducted at Kilimani Primary School to examine the sanitary conditions of the school kitchen. The inspection found 5 food handlers with medical certificates but identified several issues including a dirty and damaged floor, poor lighting and ventilation, and lack of proper food storage and preparation surfaces. RE: PUBLIC HEALTH INSPECTION FOR KILIMANI PRIMARY SCHOOL, ARGWINGS KHODHEK ROAD,
NAIROBI

A sanitary inspection report for Kilimani Primary School was carried out on 21/06/2023 for the purpose
of ascertaining the sanitary condition of the School's kitchen facility and the report obtained is as shown.

MAIN KITCHEN

FOOD HANDLERS

There are 5 food handlers; 1 male and 4 females, all with medical certificates.

FLOOR AND INTERNAL WALL

The floor of the kitchen is terrazo type which is chipped and greasy. The internal wall surfaces are dirty
which need repainting.

LIGHTING AND VENTILATION

The kitchen has poor lighting and poor ventilation and the windows need repair.

FOOD PREPARATION AND STORAGE

The food preparation surfaces have formica surfaces and shelf compartments need repair. The kitchen
also lacks a store for charcoal.

TEMORARY MAKE SHIFT (Boiler Area)

FLOOR
The floor of the boiler area is cemented and is very dirty.

SLAB AREA

The firplace is damaged and needs repair.The boiler area has 2 chimneys which are non-functional.

DINING HALL

FLOOR, INTERNAL WALLS AND CEILING

The floor of the dining hall is terrazo type which is cracked. The internal wall painting is cream and dirty
which needs repainting.

VENTILATION

The ventilation of the dining hall is back to back.

DINING TABLES

There are 11 dining tables and 2 serving tables; 1 with aluminium sheet surface.

WASHING POINTS

The external washing points are taps with no running water.

FIRE SAFETY

There is a fire extinguisher of 9 litres which is water type and is not serviced.

CONCLUSION

It is evident that the school's kitchen requires a lot of repair since it was observed that there were
damages such as the slab area and the floor. The facilities are not very well appropriate for handling food
and need servicing.

RECOMMENDATION

1. There is need for cleaning and repainting the internal wall surfaces to maintain cleanliness and
hygiene.

2. Ensure repair of the shelf compartments for proper storage and installing a charcoal storage area for
efficient cooking.

3. There is need for thorough cleaning of the floor.

4. Repairing the chipped floor to create a clean and safe working surface.

5. Improve the lighting system in the kitchen to ensure sufficient visibility during food preparation and
repair the windows to enhance ventilation.
