The document discusses infant weighing scales, which are important tools for tracking infant growth and development. They describe key details of infant weighing procedures and categories of infant birth weight. Premature infants in particular require careful weight monitoring in the NICU until they can maintain steady weight gain and be discharged. Low birth weight can indicate health issues and is associated with risks, making accurate weighing essential for infant health assessments.

Infant Weighing Scale

Weighing scales are a type of measuring tool used to determine the
weight or mass of an object. A full-size infant weighs 2500 g or more; a
low birth weight is less than 2500 g; a very low birth weight is less than
1500 g; and an extremely low birth weight is less than 1000 g. In
humans, the first weight of an infant obtained within less than the first
60 completed minutes after birth; a full-size infant weighs 2500 g or
more; a low birth weight is less than 1500 g; and an extremely low birth
weight is less than 1000 g The name scales comes from the pair of
scales or dishes in which the objects to be measured are placed, as
well as the weights / masses against which they are to be weighed.

Description:

Measuring a child’s height and weight can assist determine whether or

not he or she is developing normally.

The importance of accurate and consistent newborn weighing in

tracking an infant’s growth and development cannot be overstated. As
a result, infant weighing scales are one of the most important
equipment in clinics, hospitals, maternal and child health centres and
private offices..

• It also includes a fast reading guide.

• Designed specifically for baby support

For precise weighing, neonatal care recognises the need of utilising

high-quality baby scales. We provide a variety of well-designed baby
scales that can fit all medical needs.

Procedure :

1. Place the weighing scale on a flat, solid surface after cleaning the
infant tray.

2. Record weight prior to feeding..

3. Remove as many tubes and equipment as you can. Keep the infant
naked on the towel and weigh it (subtract the weight of the towel if the
scale has no facility to zero).

4. Place the baby in the centre of the scale pan while holding the
remaining tubes and lines in your hands.

5. Use a sterile towel for each infant separately.

6. If you’re using a pre-weighed splint, subtract the weight from the

baby’s.

7. Every week, check the accuracy of the weighing scale using

standard recognised weights for quality assurance.

Weight in premature babies

Prematurely born babies usually, but not always, weigh less than full-
term babies. If a baby is born at or after 39 weeks of pregnancy, it is
called full-term.

It makes a difference every week. The weight of a baby born at 24 or 25

weeks is less than that of a baby born at 28 or 29 weeks.

If your kid is born prematurely, he or she may have a low or very low
birth weight:

• At birth, babies weighing 3 pounds, 5 ounces (1.5 kilogrammes) to 5

pounds, 8 ounces (2.5 kilogrammes) have a low birth weight.

Underweight Newborn at NICU

When premature babies are delivered, they require additional medical

attention and assistance. They are frequently admitted to the neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU) until they are well enough to be discharged.
This usually happens around the time of their initial due date.

Before your infant can go home, you’ll need to be able to acquire

weight steadily. Babies are frequently, but not always, held in the NICU
until they weigh at least 5 pounds.

Preemies, like other babies, lose some weight after delivery and then
start to gain it again. You’ll most likely be able to give your baby
pumped breast milk while they’re in the NICU.

Because neonates do not develop the sucking reflex until they are 32
weeks old, milk is initially administered to premature babies through a
tube into their stomach.

This is also a good way for your infant to drink formula.

Premature newborns’ weight gain is an essential indicator of their

health.

Your kid will gain weight steadily if there are no underlying health
conditions that make it harder for them to grow.

For the first few weeks, their weight gain may be close to what they
would gain if they were still in the womb, depending on their level of
prematurity.

Premature babies gain weight and grow faster than their full-term
counterparts. Premature newborns are weighted during their first year
depending on the age at which they would have been born if they had

been born full term rather than their actual birth date.

If your baby is born at 35 weeks, their paediatrician will use the

newborn weight percentiles instead of those for a 5-week-old infant
when they are 5 weeks old.

By their first birthday, many preterm babies have caught up to full-term

newborns in terms of weight. It’s possible that some children won’t
catch up until they’re 18 to 24 months old.

Low birth weight has the following consequences:

Birth weight refers to a baby’s weight at the time of birth. A baby’s birth
weight is important because newborns with extremely low birth weight
are 100 times more likely to die than babies with normal birth weight.
Low birth weight is a key sign of a mother’s health, nutrition, healthcare
access, and poverty.

A weighing scale for determining birth weight is essential in all

facilities where births are made and infants are cared for. The weight
of a newborn at birth is used to assess the level of care required and to
categorise him or her into weight for date groups.

Neonatals weighing fewer than 2500 g have a 20-fold greater likelihood

of dying than neonates weighing more than 2500 g.

Low birth weight has also been associated to long-term neurologic

disabilities, delayed language development, poor academic
performance, and a higher risk of chronic conditions such as
cardiovascular disease and diabetes. As a result, many of these babies
were born underweight.

What to expect from weight gain in babies?

In the days following delivery, healthy baby newborns usually lose

some of their birth weight. This is due to the fact that they are born
with excess fluid. They swiftly get rid of the fluid.

Soon after, babies begin to acquire weight. They normally regain the
ounces infants lose at birth within two weeks.

Babies acquire 5 to 7 ounces per week during their first month of life.
Your baby may be fussier than usual just before or during a growth
spurt. They may also consume more or feed in groups. When they
cluster feed, they breastfeed more frequently for longer periods of time
(clusters). In addition, they may sleep more or less than normal.

After the growth spurt, you may notice that their clothing no longer fits.
They’re ready to move into the next size up. Babies’ weight increase
might also be slowed for a period of time.

Boys grow more weight than girls throughout their first few months.
However, by the age of five months, most newborns have doubled their
birth weight.

Conclusion:

The weight of your baby is one of many indicators that you and your
baby’s doctor can use to track his or her development. If not
addressed, gaining weight too slowly or too quickly might have long-
term health consequences.

The weight of a newborn at birth, on the other hand, does not predict
their adult weight. Premature or low-birth-weight babies might soon
catch up to their peers. Overweight older babies and toddlers can
receive assistance in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight
range.
