M11GM-Ic-2 Part 1

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for teaching Grade 11 students about determining the intercepts, zeroes, and asymptotes of rational functions. The lesson plan includes objectives, key concepts, procedures, activities, and assessments. Students will learn to graph rational functions by finding intercepts, vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptotes, and slant asymptotes. They will practice this by graphing sample functions in groups and explaining their work to the class. The goal is for students to understand how to solve for these components of rational functions and apply the skills confidently.

(The process of systematically planning, developing, evaluating and managing the instructional process by using principles of
teaching and learning – D.O. 42, s. 2016)
DETAILED LESSON PLAN

60 mins
Learning Competency Determines the: (a) intercepts; (b) zeroes; and (c) Code: M11GM-Ic-2
asymptotes
of rational functions.
Key Concepts/ To graph rational functions, factor the numerator and denominator(if necessary), find
Understandings to be the intercepts:*x - intercepts:zeros of the numerator y - intercept: f(0), Find the
Developed vertical asymptotes (determine the zerps of the denominator, find the horizontal or
oblique(slant asymptotes). Then, plot and graph the function.
Objectives At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students will be able to:
Knowledge Define an asymptote, zeroes of function and intercepts;
Skills Solve for the asymptotes, zeroes and intercepts;
Attitude Solve confidently on the board; and
Values MAKATAO-Help others who has difficulty in the lesson.
Content Intercepts,Zeroes and Asymptotes of Rational Function
Learning Resources LM’s, TG’s, chalk and board, smartphones and projectors
Procedures
Introductory Activity RECAP:
(5 mins) Yesterday, we have talked about domain and range of a function.
Today, we will learn some parts of the graph of a function with the aim to (the
objectives are read).

Video (Math Saddest Love Stories)

Transition: What do you feel in the video?
We feel sad.
What information have you learned in the video?
Tangent Lines that will meet only once and parted forever.
Parallel Lines that is never meant to meet.
Asymptotes that will get closer and closer but will not meet.
Geometrically, by definition:
 Tangent Lines
 Parallel Lines
 Asymptotes
We will learn about one of the stories, the Asymptote and Zeroes
and Intercepts of a function..
Activity (3 mins) Remember our function in our running activity f(x)= 10/x. Now, please get your phones
and let’s graph it
(The class take their smartphones and those who do not have
share with seatmates.)
*see Attachment
* You may use PowerPoint presentation using GeoGebra
Please observe your graph, scrutinize, and investigate the curves .
(The students are observing the graph)
Analysis ( 22 mins) Based on the video, what is asymptote? What is/are the asymptote of the graph?
A line where the curve goes nearer but never touches it.The lines
y=0 and x=0
Yes, what kind of line is y=0 and x=0?
Horizontal lines and Vertical lines respectively!
Very good! In your graph, where can we find the lines?
The x=0is taken by the denominator equate to 0 while the y is
the numerator equate to 0.
You are correct and partially correct?
To solve for the vertical asymptote, equate the denominator to 0
and find x..
Let’s have another function. . .
Let’s graph f(x)= x-2/x2-4
What is our horizontal asymptote?
y=0
*see Attachment
How then, can we solve the horizontal asymptote?
The horizontal asymptote is y=0 if the degree of the numerator is
lesser than the denominator, y=a/b where a is the coefficient of
the numerator and b for the denominator if the degree of
numerator and denominator is the same.
How about if the degree of the numerator is greater? Any idea?
No.
Let’s find out by graphing f(x)= x2-3x-10/(x+3).
Do we have a horizontal asymptote?
No, instead there is a slant asymptote.
*see Attachment
Yes, a slant asymptote exists. What is the function for the slant asymptote?
f(x)= x-6
Where can we get the f(x)=x-6?
Divide the numerator by the denominator and get the quotient
while disregarding the remainder.
In the three graphs, are the function touches the axes?
Yes!
What do you think we call these points?
Intercepts
Correct! What are intercepts?
These are the points where the graph touches the axes?
Will you agree in the examples that when the graph touches the x axis, y=0?
Yes! These are also the zeroes of the graph.
What is the definition of zeroes of the graph?
The value of x that gives y=0.
Abstraction (3 mins) Yeah, right. How then can we solve our asymptotes, zeroes and intercepts?
To find the intercepts of the function, set the value of x to 0 to find y
and y to 0 to find x. The x-intercept/s is/are the zero/es of the
function. To find the vertical asymptote, equate the denominator to
0 and find its x. The horizontal asymptote is y=0 if the degree of the
numerator is lesser than the denominator, y=a/b where a is the
coefficient of the numerator and b for the denominator if the degree
of numerator and denominator is the same. There is exists a slant
asymptote if the numerator’s degree is greater than the denominator.
Just divide the numerator by the denominator and take only the
whole number quotient and disregard the remainder..
Application (12 mins) Now, based on what you learn, in a group discuss the zeroes, intercepts and asymptote of
these functions. Make it sure to help those who did not understand because I will choose
randomly those who will solve on the board and explain.
*see Attachment
(The class work with the group and help those members who has
difficulty to grasp the lesson then they solve on the board)
Assessment(Project) Solve the asymptotes, zeroes and intercepts of this function f(x)= x-1/x+2
(25 mins)
Assignment Try to master your lesson by solving these functions f(x)= 1/x and f(x)= x 2 +x-6/x+4
Concluding Activity
Your life maybe passing to others but always leave a good mark to someone’s life.
