(b) A continuous beam ABC (AB=BC=15 m) has a uniform cross-section with a 07
width of 230 mm and depth of 610 mm. A cable carrying an effective
prestressing force of 450 kN is parallel to the axis of the beam and located at an
eccentricity of 200 mm. Determine the secondary and primary moment
developed at mid support section B. If the beam supports an imposed load of
2.5 kN/m, calculate the resultant stress developed at top and bottom of the beam
at B. Also, locate the resultant line of thrust through the beam AB.

Q.3 (a) Explain with sketches the various methods of achieving continuity in 07
prestressed concrete members.
(b) A prestressed concrete beam of size 230 X 450 mm carries a factored shear 07
force of 165 kN and factored moment of 40 kN.m. The effective prestress after
all losses is 675 MPa. Compressive stress at Centroidal Axis due to prestress is
5 MPa. Design suitable Shear Reinforcement using following data:
Grade of Concrete – M30
fp – 1500 Mpa
Ap – 125 mm2
Cover to Steel Wire – 50 mm
Q.4 (a) A cylindrical prestressed concrete water tank of internal diameter 25 m is 07
required to store water over a depth of 7.5 m. The permissible compressive
stress in concrete at transfer is 13 N/mm2 and the minimum compressive stress
under working pressure is 1 N/mm2. The loss ratio is 0.80. Wires of 5 mm
diameter with an initial stress of 1000 N/mm2 are available for circumferential
winding. Design the tank wall for Hoop Tension assuming the base connection
to be hinged. Use fck = 40 MPa.
(b) Explain in detail the advantages of prestressed concrete pipes. 07

Q.4 (a) A non-cylinder prestressed concrete pipe of 1.6 m diameter with a core 07
thickness of 100 mm is required to withstand a working pressure of 1 N/mm2.
Determine the pitch of 5 mm diameter wire winding if the high tensile initial
stress in the wire is limited to 1000 N/mm2. The permissible maximum and
minimum stresses in the concrete are 12 N/mm2 (Compression) and Zero
(Tension). The loss ratio is 0.8 If the direct tensile strength of concrete is 2
N/mm2, estimate the load factor against cracking.
(b) Explain the advantages of using prestressed concrete floor slabs mentioning 07
their common applications.
Q.5 (a) A Pretensioned beam of 80 mm wide and 120 mm deep, is to be designed to 07
support working load of 4 kN, each concentrated at the third point over a span
of 3 m. If the permissible stresses in tension are zero at transfer and 1.4 N/ mm2
under working load condition, design the number of 3 mm wires and the
corresponding eccentricity required at the mid span section. Permissible tensile
stress in wires is 1400 N/ mm2. The loss of prestress is 20% and the density of
concrete is 25 kN/ m3.
(b) Write short note on methods of prestressing shell structures along with 07
diagrams.
OR
Q.5 (a) Explain the term composite construction and its advantages in using precast 07
units in association with cast in situ concrete.
(b) Enlist the advantages of prestressing long span folded plates. Sketch the typical 07
cross-section of folded plates showing the distribution of tendons in the section.
