1. A teacher should always make lesson plans as it allows them to thoroughly plan various important elements of the lesson like needs analysis, goals and objectives, student and material evaluation, and teacher reflection. 2. A good lesson plan consists of what will be taught, objectives and goals, suitable teaching level and methods, time management, introduction, evaluation approach, and teacher reflection. 3. Teachers may face challenges like not properly analyzing student needs, satisfying all student types and levels, lack of resources, balancing testing and modern teaching, and lack of preparation time.

LESSON PLANNING-QUESTIONS AND TASKS

BEFORE-READING

1. Do you think a teacher should make lesson plans? Why?/Why not?

A teacher always ought to do his/her lesson plans since it consists more
than what should be done in the classroom. “Needs Analysis”,“Goals And
Objective Determination” “Evaluation of student”, “Evaluation of material”,
“Teacher Reflection” are just few elements of LP .

By doing LP we obtain:

In depth look at our lesson what it consists and what should be

included.

Which way/methods are suitable for this lesson/classroom ? Since

our LP will be built around it it is very crucial to choose the right activities
which will be sufficient in our classrooms.

What is the best way to Evaluate the outcomes of this lesson? Since
every method will have different outcomes they should be evaluated with
separate methods.

Is our lesson suitable with our overall goals/objectives? Therefore

we will be in touch with our goals and objectives.

how much time should we consume while doing this lesson? Time
management is an essential characteristic of a teacher as well as a
normal person.

Which activities would be suitable and sufficient for our Lesson?

Since our LP will be built around different methods according to the
subject and classroom differences. Our activities should be suitable as
well.

Why not? If we see our self as a master teacher and we want to be an

IGNORANT person who overlooks the fact that every classroom has their
own differences to consider we may not do it.
1
2. What makes a good lesson plan? In other words, what does a good
lesson plan consist of?
What should be taught, what are the objectives and goals of this
course and what should be Achieved in this lesson in order to reach
those goals.

What is the suitable level of teaching should be done in the class

regarding the level of the students. This includes a needs analysis to be
done so.

How much time should be consumed while teaching as well as doing

the activities related to the subject. In order to be sufficient enough.

What is the best way/method to teach this particular lesson which

method would be more suitable since every subject has his
own properties.

A good introduction should be included since it gives your students to

learn about what you plan to teach. Your introduction will set the stage
for the rest of the lesson.

How the Evaluation will be done. Since every subject has his own
method they should be evaluated in suitable ways.

Teacher Reflection- This section is to be completed after lesson. It

represents what you think worked, or what did not work, and why. It is
meant to give you some insight into practice and will hopefully help you
to make adjustments and modifications where necessary.

2
3. What challenges may a teacher face while making lesson plans?

If the needs analysis haven't been done, the teacher naturally cannot
determine the needs of the students as well as their relative level in the
subject therefore it may make it harder for the teacher to plan his/her
lessons.

the type of students in a classroom will be different Therefore

Satisfying all of them might be a little bit tricky.

Lack of proper funding and financial/cultural background related

problems may be restricting for the teacher.

Teaching on a communicative or more modernist way at the same

time satisfying the needs of standardized testing.

Lack of parental support is of course one of the problems since

learning involves outdoor/informal learning as well as indoor/formal
learning in itself.

Available time for the teacher to prepare her LP may not be enough
therefore teacher might not be able to prepare her own LP

4. Before making a lesson plan, what should a teacher do?

Knowing who your students are, is a big part of the teaching.

Therefore a needs analysis should be done right before a new
lesson/subject.

Know your subject:What it contains and how it should be taught as

well as how much in depth it should be taught in your class should be
considered.

Analyse and study the related teaching materials/sheets for an

overlook on the related subject and how it should be Evaluated

Identify the objectives as well as goals that you hope your students
will achieve in the course.

3 Consider your resources since you have to depend on them

WHILE-READING:

1. Do the task at the very beginning of the chapter: ‘Exploring

metaphors’.
I would go with a symphony. While the teacher is the Orchestra Director
students are the very essential instruments which every one of them has
an unique sound/characteristic. Teacher directs the Learning in the
classroom while students acts according to their characteristics. Also every
student plays his own role and attributes to learning in the class.

2. In how many different ways can we vary language learning activities

within a lesson?
It depends on the requirements of the subject/class but essentially it should
involve 4 basic language skills which are
Speaking/Writing-Reading/Listening

3. Read the ‘Guidelines for ordering components of a lesson plan’ on

page 97 carefully and answer these questions

A:How far do you agree with these guidelines?

Answer: I fairly agree with these guidelines yet I would make some changes
according to age of my learner as well as their level and interest in the
target language. I will be mentioning my reasonings and changes in the B
part of the exercise

B:Would they be appropriate for each teaching context as they

stand, or would you wish to omit, add to or change any of them according to
our own teaching situations?
Answer:They wouldn't be appropriate for each teaching context just like
every other guideline which can be listed yet there are some changes that I
would like to do.

1. I would add to 5.End on a positive note part since I would like to present
a challenge to my own class in order to create interest and further
activities which will be done as a homework activity. iiiiiiiiiiiiii b
2. 1. Put the harder tasks earlier. For adolescent and young learners I
wouldn't change it. However for advanced and adult learners Creating a
bridge from know to unknown would be more sufficient. since their
learning subjects requires more cognitive thinking.
4
4. Visit the link below and watch the video of a lesson.evaluate the
effectiveness of it.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING LESSON EFFECTIVENESS

=I Agree. =I Don't Agree ~
=Somehow Agree

a) The learners were active all the time.

In the lesson we have watched students were more passive rather than
active. Since they were mostly listening to the teacher and his instructions.
There should have been more time left to activities.

b) The learners were attentive all the time.

They seemed to be paying attention almost all the time yet they couldn't
attend to activities since it wasn't directed by the teacher. Some was more
active than the others which should have been regulated by the teacher.

c) The learners enjoyed the lesson, were motivated.

They seemed to be enjoying the class since the teacher was
interesting and playful at the same time.

d) The class seemed to be learning the material well. ~

I don't think we can possibly understand how well the material is
learned since we didn't see any evaluation during the class yet
some of the students performed the wished outcome so it might be
somehow learned.

e) The lesson went according to plan.

The introduction, presentation of materials,Group activities has been done
and explained. Teacher evaluated the speakers and left with a further activity
which will be done at home.

f) The language was used communicatively throughout.

It was used communicatively however It was used mostly by the teacher
~
himself with little Contribution of the students Therefore It wasn't used
effectively as it should be.

5
g) The learners were engaging with the foreign language
throughout. ~
Some of them was engaging with the language yet some of them wasn't
since they were in more of a passive role. The teacher didn't direct the
communication made in the groups. Therefore some of the students just took
the control of the communication made in the groups.

4.MY VERSION OF CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING LESSON

EFFECTIVENESS
a) The learners were active all the time.
b) The learners enjoyed the lesson, were motivated.
c) The learners were engaging with the foreign language
throughout.
d) The language was used communicatively throughout.
e) The student was able to perform the desirable behavior.
f) The class seemed to be learning the material well.
g) The lesson went according to plan.
h) The learners were attentive all the time.

AFTER-READING

1. What do you think you know about lesson planning (LP) after you
have studied the topic thoroughly? Write 5 things you think you have
learned about LP.

It is more than just thinking what should be done in a classroom it

includes “Needs Analysis”, “Goal And Objective Determination”
“Evaluation of student”, “Evaluation of material”, “Teacher Reflection” ...
Therefore making it combination of all of them. It ıs way more complicated
than I thought so.

One should always do his lesson planning even if he is experienced in the

teaching of a given subject. Since the type of students in a different
classroom will be different. Therefore their needs will be different as well.
Suitable method should be determined and the lesson should be
planned according to those needs.
6
Despite how essential and important it is LP is not used widely and
effectively as it should be regarding my experiences with my co-workers
in my workplace as well as my previous teachers.

In the end I have grasped the importance of the LP and what are the
elements of it. Im sure I will be using LP ın my future teaching life as well
as my own learnings(Japanese self-learning B1.)

As an subjective opinion I Thought ı was good enough to teach in a

classroom(I had been working as an etut teacher in a private institution
for 6 months before the covid-19) But after learning about LP I think
There are still things I have to learn before I become one.

INTERVIEWING TEACHERS

Levent Kurtuluş Experience:25 years lvntkrtls@gmail.com

BOX 15.2: QUESTIONS ON LESSON PREPARATION

1.How long before a specific lesson do you prepare it?
At least one or two days ago I start for the preparation of the lesson. I collect
documents and worksheets and then I organize them according to the level
of the classes since there might be differences in their levels based on the
class as a whole or on the individual students.

2.Do you write down lesson notes to guide you? Or do you rely on a
lesson format provided by another teacher, the coursebook, or a
Teacher’s Book?
I take notes on the course of the lesson: warm-up, structural information and
drills after presenting the subject so that they can grasp the subject by
practicing in simple sentences.

3.If so, are these notes brief (a single page or less) or long (more than
one page)?
A single or less, generally some notes on the paper.
7
4.What do they consist of?
Some notes that will guide me to the worksheet exercises to get the students
to grasp the subject of the lesson.

5.Do you note down your objectives?

I note down the objectives on the class file. For example; the students will be
able to ask / answer the questions about time / daily routines etc.

6.Do you actually look at your notes during the lesson? If so, rarely
Occasionally? Frequently?
Rarely.

7.What do you do with your lesson notes after the lesson?

I take some notes about what percentage of the subject I have achieved,
failed to give so that it might be helpful for other classes before the lesson.
Then I try to make up all those shortages.

Hüseyin Göktekin Experience:2 years.

BOX 15.2: QUESTIONS ON LESSON PREPARATION

1.How long before a specific lesson do you prepare it?
I approximately spend my half an hour to get prepared for the lesson.
Sometimes the time spent may be longer

2.Do you write down lesson notes to guide you? Or do you rely on a
lesson format provided by another teacher, the coursebook, or a
Teacher’s Book?
Most of the time, i follow the book but rarely i use my own notes that i have
prepared beforehand

3.If so, are these notes brief (a single page or less) or long (more than
one page)?
Actually, i write some key words to tell about the content of the topic,
information etc. They are mostly one-page Long.

8
4.What do they consist of?
The words or notes tell about the details of the topic or thought

5.Do you note down your objectives?

If necessary, i add my own opinions about the subject before telling the point

6.Do you actually look at your notes during the lesson? If so, rarely?
Occasionally? Frequently?
I hardly ever have a look at my notes because i always try to revise my notes
before the lesson.

7.What do you do with your lesson notes after the lesson?

I use them for the following lessons as a guide. I hold them to check the
students' progress.

2. Reflect on the evidence-the teachers’ answers- you have

gathered. What conclusions have you arrived at about lesson
planning? Note down.
Before doing the interview I Thought an experienced teacher who has been
working for over 25 years probably won't be preparing his LP. However as it
seems in my interview, he does prepare it couple days ago.
On the other hand Hüseyin Göktekin who has been working for 2 years
seems to be sparing less time than Levent Kurtuluş. As an result we might
say, There isn't any correlation between Age/Experience and Preparing
LP. Depanding on what I have learned about LP on this task and I Admire
Levent Kurtuluş as a teacher as well as a person, I would like to fallow his
footsteps and prepare my LP carefully from now on in order to become a
great teacher.
