ACTIVITIES IN SCIENCE 9

(Mechanics, Energy and Thermodynamics)

I. MECHANICS and ENERGY

Activity 1:
Using the following formulas, determine the missing values on each number. Write your answer at the back
of your paper.

1. Determine the distance covered by a car which has an initial velocity of 2.5 m/s and accelerates at a rate
of 5 m/s2 in 15 seconds.

2. What will be the final velocity of a train that has an initial velocity of 1.5 m/s, North and accelerates at a
rate of 4.5 m/s2 in 5 seconds.

3. Determine the final velocity of an airplane that has an initial velocity of 2 m/s and accelerates at a rate of
7 m/s2 within 15 meters.

Activity 2:
Read the statement below and answer the questions that follow. Write your answer at the back of your
paper.

Energy is the ability or capacity to do work. It has two types: kinetic and potential energy. Potential energy
is the energy at rest while kinetic energy is the energy in motion. Examples of potential energy are mechanical,
chemical, nuclear and gravitational. While the examples of kinetic energy are heat/thermal, sound, radiant and
electrical energy.

Task: Tell whether the following are examples of kinetic energy or potential energy. Write KE if it is for kinetic
energy, and PE if it is for potential energy.

1. Listening to radio 6. A car that is moving

2. Sun’s radiation 7. A falling apple
3. Light bulb 8. Electric fan
4. Television 9. Rolling stone
5. A man standing 10. Pulling a bow

Activity 3:
On one to two sentences, define the following terms:

1. Energy :
2. Kinetic energy :
3. Potential energy :
4. Radiant energy :
5. Heat/thermal energy :
6. Electrical energy :
7. Sound energy :
8. Gravitational energy :
9. Chemical energy :
10. Nuclear energy :

II. THERMODYNAMICS

Activity 4:
Describe the following signs and equations used for thermodynamics. Write your answer on the space
provided.

Signs and Equations Description

W
ΔQ
ΔU
ΔU = 0
ΔQ = 0
W=0
W>0
W<0
ΔQ > 0
ΔQ < 0

Activity 5:
Complete the table below by providing information about thermodynamic processes. Write your answer on
the space provided.

Process Mathematical Expression Definition

Activity 6:
State the difference between the following terms. Write your answer at the back of your paper.

 Steam engine and Four cycle-stroke enegine

 Diesel cycle and Otto cycle
 Heat engine and Carnot engine

Activity 7:
Illustrate and describe the four cycle-stroke engine (movable piston inside a cylinder).
