ccwl –– Switch counter clockwise limits sccwl  Software counter clockwise limits
upl  Switch upwards limits supl  Software upwards limits
downl  Switch downwards limits sdownl  Software downwards limits

Software limit is a kind of limit protection method, which limits the antenna rotation via the
angle. ACU compares the current antenna angle with preset software limit angle at any time
while it controls the antenna. Once the current antenna angle reaches the limit angle, ACU will
stop antenna and display the limit status. The software limit improves the reliability of limit
protection and it is much safer when the antenna is operated by ACU. The angle value of
software limit is set in the monitor mode (refer to 4.1.2 for detail). The value of the software
limit is usually set before the switch limit, so that the antenna first reaches the software limit
because the software is more reliable than switches.
3.3.1.5 ACU/Local Control

In the step track mode, ACU starts a track process firstly. During tracking, “tracking” is
displayed on the screen. When signal level reaches maximum, ACU stops tracking and marks
the maximum level as the bases for next track process, the screen displays “waiting”. Then
ACU examines the signal level continuously, when value of signal variety is higher than the
dropout level, it starts next track process. If the receiver level drops below protection threshold
due to channel, ACU will automatically stop tracking and the antenna isn’t in the motion
status. It doesn’t start tracking until the signal level returns to the normal status. When the
signal level is lower than protection threshold, the screen of ACU displays the “signal low”.

Note: If the antenna is limited in some direction by the software during tracking process,
limit indication in that direction appears, but the antenna rotation is not affected, the
track process can go on.

size, elevation step size, dropout level and protect threshold.

Both Az. and El. step sizes mean the length of which Az. and El. axes of the antenna rotate
every step during the tracking process and allowed values are from 1 to 255. Both Az. and El.
step sizes should be determined depending on the travel speed and aperture of antenna as well
as the operation frequency bands of the satellite in the practical applications in order to get a
good tracking result.

The dropout level means the value of signal variety for ACU startup track. When the value of
signal variety of the tracking receiver is higher than it, ACU will start a track. The allowed
value of the dropout level is 0―6, which is the voltage value with unit in volt.

The North West China Research Institute Of Electronic Equipment (NWIEE)

3

The protection threshold means the threshold level that ACU stops tracking and protects the
antenna. Sometimes, the signal level of the tracking receiver will largely decrease because of
the channels and the signal shall be lost if the antenna continues to track the target, the
protection threshold has been set in the design. When the signal level of the tracking receiver is
lower than the protection threshold, ACU doesn't enable the tracking and the antenna is in the
protection status. When the signal level is recovered and is higher than the protection threshold,
ACU will continue to track the target again. The allowed range of the protection threshold is
0―8V.

Turn the switches CW/CCW or UP/DOWN, the antenna will rotate towards the corresponding
direction. It will stop rotating when the switch is on the “OFF”.
7.4 Speed Control
The speed control switch is used to switch the drive speed of the antenna azimuth and
elevation. The drive speed of the antenna is the low speed when the switch is in the L status
and it is the high speed when the switch is in H status.
7.5 Polarization Adjustment (L/C, PCW/PCCW)
L/C switch is used to adjust the polarization mode: The polarization mode is switched to the
linear polarization when the switch is in L position the antenna will automatically stop rotating
when it reaches the linear polarization position; the polarization rotation in CW or CCW can be
controlled by PCW/PCCW switch so as to adjust the linear polarization angle when it is in the
linear polarization mode.
7.6 Emergency Stop Switch
The internal power (DC) of the driver is cut off by pressing the emergency stop switch when it
is required to stop the antenna rotating under the emergent situation. Rotate the emergency stop
switch in CW to release it and restore the internal power of the drive.

10.3 Instruction for Control Command

The operation modes for the local control of ACU are: Standby, Manual, Step track, Pointing
and Satellite selection.

The operation modes for the remote control of ACU are: Standby, Step track and Pointing.

The remote/local mode of ACU is set in the local status of ACU and can be held when the
power is cut. When ACU in the local status, the only command it can be implemented is Status
inquiry command and returns current status of antenna. If other commands are received, it will
return an illegal remote control error. The default operation mode of power-on when ACU is in
remote is the standby status. When a tracking command is received, ACU will operate the
antenna tracking the satellite according to the signal level presented by tracking receiver and it
will return to standby when receives a Standby command. ACU will control the antenna travel
according to the pointing angle after ACU receives the pointing command and ACU return to
the standby status after the pointing is completed. The pointing command parameters must give
the azimuth and elevation angles simultaneously, if it is necessary to control an axis, the
pointing angle of another axis should be the current angle of antenna. ACU can not implement
the command and returns to the error status (equipment in busy) if it receives the control
commands except the standby command in the process of pointing. When a polarization
control command is received, ACU will control the antenna polarization according to the
polarization pointing angle and return to standby after the pointing is completed. ACU also can
not implement the command and returns to the error status (equipment in busy) if it receives
the control commands except the standby command in the process of polarization pointing.
