COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE AND ORGANISTION

NIKITHA MARIUM JOHN 20BCE0647
SLOT: C2/TC2
INTRODUCTION
The Intel Core i9-9900K is the most powerful CPU in the 9th Generation Intel
Core line up. For casual web browsers and YouTube devotees, this chip is
overkill. But for gamers and creatives, Intel claims that this processor will take
your performance to the next level.
In fact, Intel even suggests the Intel Core i9-9900K is ‘the world’s best gaming
desktop processor’. With a boost clock speed of 5GHz and the capability to
overclock, such a suggestion doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Plus, there are a
stonking eight cores and 16 threads, giving the Intel 9th Gen i9 a sizable
performance boost.

HISTORY
They were introduced in May 2017 for LGA 2066 chips, also known as Intel
Core X-series processors. With their high number of cores, high power draw,
high thermal output, and high performance, they are intended to be used by
enthusiasts. A mobile version based on the standard BGA1440 socket was
released in 2018, featuring six hyperthreaded cores and 12 MB of cache. It has
been proven to be able to attain 5 GHz under ideal conditions.
The Core i9 brand was expanded to incorporate mainstream processors in
October 2018, following the release of the Core i9-9900K processor, which uses
Intel's mainstream consumer platform.

SUPPORT
COMPATIBLE DEVICES

There are 3 conditions for a device to be compatible with a processor;

1.While building a computer, you will find multiple form factor options to
choose from. This includes EATX, ATX, Micro ATX and Mini ITX
motherboards that have to match with your cabinet size. You can simply go
with the popular ATX size for high compatibility and multiple connectivity
options or with a mini ITX board for a compact system.
2. To use your i9 9900K CPU with a given motherboard, it needs to be
compatible with its chipset. And while you can use it with entry-level chipsets,
we highly recommended to go with a Z390 motherboard to get the most out of
your Intel CPU. Thus, all of the i9 9900K motherboards listed here are the Z390
chipset-based motherboards.
3. Since the motherboard of your computer acts like the central bridge, you have
to connect all of the internal components as well as external input and output
devices to it. Thus, you should be looking for connectivity options like multiple
RAM slots, a number of M.2 slots, USB type C ports, high-speed USB ports,
Wi-Fi connectivity and various other things to ensure that you are getting a
versatile one.

1) Micro Center Intel Core i9-9900K Desktop Processor

Why this device is compatible with the processor is that it comes with 8 cores
16 threads and offers up to 5 GHz turbo. Apart from this, you also get a 16 MB
intel smart cache. It features a 5x protection III hardware level that ensures its
longevity. The motherboard is only compatible with Intel 3000 series chipsets.

With the maximum storage capacity of 128 GB, you have ample space for
necessary software and basic programs. You can expand the memory using the
two memory channels with a maximum memory bandwidth of 41.6 GB/s. When
it comes to connectivity, there is a M. 2 slot and a USB 3.1 Gen2 port. The
motherboard is equipped with a Realtek ALC887 HD audio code that provides 8
channel HD gaming audios.
2)Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula Motherboard

The Asus ROG Maximus XI Formula Z390 motherboard is the most powerful
option stated in this article. Other than offering high-performance numbers and
an inbuilt water cooling block, you also get a standard ATX form factor with
this Z390 motherboard along with the LGA1151 socket.

You can also easily connect various devices to it using the various ports like the
dual M.2 SSD slots, 6 SATA3 ports, 4 memory slots that support a maximum of
128 GB RAM, USB 3.2 Type-A ports, USB type C ports, 4 PCIe slots, Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, 5G LAN and much more with this board. Being a premium option,
you also get a 3-year warranty with this motherboard for i9 9900K.

3) Asus ROG Strix Z390-E Gaming Motherboard

Asus also makes high-performance motherboards under its ROG Strix lineup
that have mid-range prices including its Z390 offerings made for Intel
processors.

This Asus ROG Strix Z390 motherboard is the 3rd product in this article and
you get a high-performance Z390 ATX motherboard with the LGA1151 socket
made for Intel 8th gen and 9th gen CPUs. With this Z390 motherboard, you can
expect to get excellent overclocking performance for both the CPU and the
memory.

Speaking of the memory, there are a total of 4 memory slots supporting up to

128 GB RAM along with dual SSD slots as well as 6 SATA3 ports. Other
connectivity options are USB type C, type A, Display Port, HDMI, ethernet and
much more with this board. While you do get Wi-Fi included with this board, its
speeds are a bit limited as it is not Wi-Fi 6. Fortunately, you can easily add a
separate network card using the included 6 PCIe slots.

4) GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS PRO Wi-Fi Motherboard

At the price this motherboard is sold for, the buyer gets, standard ATX
form factor with this Gigabyte Z390 motherboard made for Intel Core i9
9900K as it includes the LGA1151 socket. Talking about its expansion
options, you get a total of 6 PCIe slots of various sizes with this
motherboard.

While it may not be the best option for high end overclocking, you do get
various connectivity options with it. This includes things like Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth connectivity, dual M.2 slots with heatsinks, 6 SATA 3 ports, USB
type C, type A, 4 memory slots for up to 128 GB RAM, ethernet, HDMI and
much more.

PRICING
The intel i9 9900K processors is sold at a price of Rs60,000(excluding tax) in
the market.
FUTURE
Launched as a replacement to the 8th Gen Coffee Lake lineup, the 9th Gen
Coffee Lake Refresh CPUs were brought to the market to compete against the
AMD Zen+ based Ryzen 2000 CPUs but came with one of the worst
core/thread segmentation in Intel's history where they were offering Core i5
CPUs with just 6 cores and 6 threads and Core i7 CPUs with 8 cores and 8
threads. Only the flagship model, the Core i9-9900K retained multi-threading
support with 8 cores and 16 threads. They will now be replaced by 10 th Gen
Comet Lake CPU’s.

CONCLUSION
The new Core i9-9900K marks the first time that Intel is using its Core i9 brand
for a mainstream desktop CPU, supplanting the usual top-spec Core i7 model. It
has eight cores with Hyper-Threading, for 16 total threads. The base speed is
3.6GHz and the single-core boost speed is 5GHz. The company is calling this
the first “broad-volume” 5GHz CPU. There’s also a 16MB cache and dual-
channel DDR4 RAM support. The rated TDP is 95W, and Intel points out that
compared to the Core i7-8700K, the new Core i9-9900K has more cores with
similar frequencies running within the same thermal envelope.

Intel claimed that gaming performance was improved by up to 10 percent

compared to the previous generation and up to 37 percent compared to a three-
year-old PC. Similarly, video editing with Adobe Premiere is up to 34 percent
and 97 percent faster respectively, as per Intel’s own testing. The company
demonstrated a single PC with a Core i9-9900K running two games in separate
virtual machines simultaneously, but gaming while encoding and streaming is a
more likely usage scenario.

While the Intel Core i9 9900K may not be the latest processor from Intel right
now, it is still one of the best processors. As it is a couple of generations old, it
has a high-performance processor at a great price and at the same time you can
expect to get excellent performance out of this chip especially for gaming,
thanks to its excellent overclocking capabilities.
