1.2) Functional Overview

The purpose of the Mega-Guard Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) is to
monitor bridge activity and detect operator disability which could lead to marine accidents. The
BNWAS monitors the awareness of the officer on the bridge and automatically alerts an on duty
officer in case the officer on the bridge becomes incapable of performing his duties. In case the
officer on duty does not respond, the other officers and other crew members are alerted by the
BNWAS. Also, the BNWAS can monitor the alarms associated with navigation equipment if it
is connected in a network with Mega-Guard Alarm Panels used in the same purpose and can
warn the on-duty officer in the event that any alarm initiated by navigation equipment on the
navigating bridge has not been acknowledged within 30 seconds.
The Mega-Guard BNWAS fulfils all applicable rules including: IMO MSC. 128(75), IEC62616
and Type Approval by class societies.
The BNWAS Panel has standard DIN size 144 x 144 mm for flush panel console mounting.
The BNWAS Panel contains operator push-buttons and LEDs. A text sheet with description for
each push-button and each LED is inserted from the top of the panel.
The rear side of the BNWAS Panel is equipped with detachable terminal strips for field wiring.
The Mega-Guard Navigational Watch Alarm System consists of the following items:

 BNWAS Panel, installed in bridge console for flush panel mounting.

Autopilot_In Autopilot is engaged Autopilot is disengaged

ECDIS_In ECDIS is engaged ECDIS is disengaged

1.4) Bridge Watch Mode selection

Four different Bridge Watch Modes are available on BNWAS Panel:
- WATCH ON mode (selected by default at power-up)
- WATCH AUTO ON mode
- WATCH STAND-BY mode
- WATCH OFF mode
The selected watch mode is indicated by the corresponding LED.
Only the Supervisor (Master Officer) can change the Bridge Watch Mode after entering a
personal code (password) via the Arrow Left and Arrow Right pushbuttons (LEVEL2 of
security).
In WATCH ON mode, the BNWAS panel is always active and monitors the awareness of the
officer on the bridge.

Title : BNWAS Panel Page 7 of 52

File : PTD-BNWAS-Panel-R1.11
Operator Guide Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

WATCH AUTO ON and WATCH STAND-BY modes are available only if the “Automatic
Mode” option is set as “Controlled by HCS/TCS” (configurable from setup menu, see chapter
3.23 Setup screen: Automatic Mode). If the “Automatic Mode” option is configured as
“Compliant with SOLAS V/19.2.2.3”, then only WATCH ON and WATCH OFF modes are
available.

In WATCH AUTO ON mode, the BNWAS panel is active only when the ship’s heading or
track control system is engaged. The BNWAS panel automatically switches to WATCH
STAND-BY mode when the ship’s heading or track control system is disengaged. The BNWAS
panel is not active while it is in WATCH STAND-BY mode. The panel automatically return to
WATCH AUTO ON mode when the ship’s heading or track control system is re-engaged.
In WATCH OFF mode, the BNWAS panel is permanently de-activated.

1.5) On Duty Officer Selection

The On Duty officer can be selected by pressing ON DUTY pushbutton in between
OFFICER1...OFFICER4. If less than 4 officers are defined in BNWAS configuration (setup
menu), then only this number of officers can be selected, starting from OFFICER1 (e.g. if 3
officers are defined in setup menu, then only the OFFICER1, OFFICER2 and OFFICER3 can
be selected). The current on duty officer is indicated by corresponding OFFICER1...OFFICER4
LED. If the on duty officer is changed while the current on duty officer is already alarmed, the
new on duty officer will be alarmed, too.
The selection of the On Duty Officer is always allowed in LEVEL2 of security (protected by
password). Only the Supervisor (Master Officer) can enter/exit from LEVEL2 of security.
The selection of the On Duty Officer can also be allowed in LEVEL1 of security (configurable
from setup menu). In this case no password is needed to change the on duty officer.

1.6) Monitoring the awareness of the bridge officer

1.6.1) Normal Operation

The BNWAS panel contains a watch timer which can be adjusted between 3 and 12 minutes
(from setup menu). If the BNWAS is in WATCH ON or WATCH AUTO ON mode, the set-
time is displayed on the LCD display and the BNWAS is downcounting, starting from set-time,
and the remaining time is also displayed on the LCD display. The officer on bridge has to reset
the watch timer before the timer reaches zero. In this way he shows his awareness. The reset of
the timer can be done in two ways:

 By pressing the RESET pushbutton

 By showing activity so that a PIR motion sensor is activated

The BNWAS panel contains an illuminated RESET pushbutton and in bridges with large work
area, additional RESET pushbuttons have to be installed and connected to Reset_In input.
Pressing the RESET pushbutton once will reset the watch timer and initiate a new dormant
period. If the RESET pushbutton is kept pressed (continuous activation of reset), this will not
prolong the dormant period or cause a suppression of the sequence of visual indications and
alarms.

1.6.2) Visual Alarm and Audible Bridge Alarm

In case the watch timer reaches zero, the BNWAS first warns the officer on the bridge via
VISUAL ALARM LED. Also the panel RESET pushbutton and all remote RESET pushbuttons
installed on bridge will start to flash at current dimming level. If the officer on the bridge does
not reset the BNWAS within 15 seconds, the BNWAS built-in buzzer is activated and the
external bridge audible alarms which are connected to the Bridge Alarm Output are activated as
well. The Bridge Alarm is also known as first stage audible alarm. A specific modulation
characteristic sound for first stage audible alarm can be selected from set-up menu (the built-un
buzzer and the Bridge Alarm Output have the same modulation characteristic sound configured
for first stage audible alarm). The BNWAS panel indicates this mode by activating the BRIDGE
ALARM LED. In this manner, the officer on the bridge is alerted and he can press the RESET
pushbutton to reset the watch timer before the on duty OFFICER ALARM is activated. If the
watch timer is reset, then the panel RESET pushbutton and all remote RESET pushbuttons
installed on bridge will stop flashing and will illuminate at backlight level.

1.6.3) On duty OFFICER ALARM

If the officer on the bridge does not reset the BNWAS panel within 15 seconds after the audible
alarm on bridge is activated, the on duty officer alarm is activated as well. The audible alarm in
the cabin of the selected on duty officer will be activated. The Officer Alarm is also known as
second stage audible alarm. A specific modulation characteristic sound for second stage audible
alarm can be selected from set-up menu. The BNWAS indicates this mode by activating the
OFFICER ALARM LED. In this manner the on duty officer is alarmed and can go to the bridge
and overview the situation. He can press the RESET pushbutton to cancel all alarms and to reset
the watch timer before the crew alarm is activated.

1.6.4) Crew Alarm

If the on duty officer does not reset the BNWAS within 90-180 seconds (adjustable from setup-
menu) after the audible alarm in the on duty officer’s cabin is activated, the audible alarms in all
other officer cabins and a crew audible alarm is activated as well. The Crew Alarm is also
known as third stage audible alarm. A specific modulation characteristic sound for third stage
audible alarm can be selected from set-up menu. The BNWAS indicates this mode by activating
the CREW ALARM LED. In this manner an officer or other crew member can go to the bridge
and overview the situation and press the RESET pushbutton to cancel all alarms and to reset the
watch timer.
Note: If less than 4 officers are defined in BNWAS configuration (setup menu), then only these
officers will be alarmed in case of a CREW ALARM, starting with OFFICER1 (e.g. if 3 officers
are defined in setup menu, then only the OFFICER1, OFFICER2 and OFFICER3 will be
alarmed).

1.7) Emergency call

An emergency call pushbutton (EM CALL) is integrated in BNWAS panel and in bridges with
large work area, additional Emergency Call pushbuttons have to be installed and connected to
Emergency_In input. When pressing this button once, the panel is entering in Emergency Call
mode and the audible alarm in the on duty officer cabin is activated and the OFFICER ALARM
LED is also activated. The BNWAS panel indicates this mode by illuminating the EM CALL
pushbutton at current dimmed level (steady on). The RESET pushbutton is also illuminated at
current dimmed level (steady on).
Title : BNWAS Panel Page 9 of 52

Operator Guide Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

The panel exits from this mode if the panel RESET pushbutton is pressed for more than 2
seconds. The remote RESET pushbuttons (installed on bridge) cannot be used to exit from
Emergency Call Mode. Also the Master, by entering in LEVEL2 of security, cancels the
Emergency Call Mode.
While the panel is placed in Emergency Call Mode and the LEVEL1 security is selected on
panel, the On Duty Officer cannot be changed.
If the Emergency Call mode is not reset within 90-180 seconds (adjustable from setup menu)
after the audible alarm in the on duty officer’s cabin is activated, the audible alarm in all other
officer cabins and a crew audible alarm is activated as well. Also the CREW ALARM LED is
activated on BNWAS panel. When BNWAS panel exits from Emergency Call mode, all alarms
are cancelled and EM_CALL and RESET pushbuttons will be illuminated at backlight level.

1.8) Navigation alarms

The BNWAS can be used to monitor the alarms associated with navigation equipment (e.g.
navigation light failure alarms, gyrocompass failure etc) and to warn the on-duty officer if any of
these alarms has not been acknowledged within a period of 30 seconds. This alarm will be called
in this document “BNWAS navigation alarm”.
For this purpose, the BNWAS Panel must be connected in the same (Ethernet) network with
Mega-Guard Alarm Panels used to monitor the failures of the navigation equipment (max 16
panels with 16 inputs each). All the Mega-Guard Alarm Panels used to monitor the failures of
the navigation equipment should be configured in following way:

 all navigation status channels (alarms) connected to Alarm Panel local channels must be
configured as DI/GROUP channels with the same destGroup as BNWAS
navAlarmGroup
 all navigation status channels (alarms) connected to Alarm Panel local channels must
have the reportAlarm configured to ALARM or ALARM NO HORN
 all Alarm Panels must have the "Send ACK to Bus" option enabled
 all Alarm Panels must be configured as "Normal Panel"

By setting the navAlarmGroup to a value different than “none” (see Chapter 3), the monitoring
of alarms associated with navigation equipment is enabled.
The BNWAS navigation alarm is generated in two situations:

 when a navigation status channel which belongs to navAlarmGroup is coming in alarm

state and is not acknowledged within a 30s period
 when more than 15s elapsed and no Ethernet Alarm Panel message was received from
the Alarm Panels which have local channels belonging to navAlarmGroup (if the
“enable Alarm Panel KA alarms” option is configured on BNWAS)

When the BNWAS generates a navigation alarm, the following actions are done:
 the Visual Alarm, BNWAS built-in buzzer and bridge alarm output are switched ON in
order to warn the officer on the bridge
 the current on-duty officer is also alarmed at once via the corresponding officer alarm
output
Title : BNWAS Panel Page 10 of 52
Date : 14 April 2017
File : PTD-BNWAS-Panel-R1.11
Operator Guide Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System

 The BNWAS panel indicates this mode (BNWAS navigation alarm ON) by illuminating
the RESET pushbutton at current dimmed level (steady on). The remote RESET
pushbuttons are also illuminated at current dimmed level (steady on). A specific message
which indicates the source of alarm is also shown on LCD screen: "NAV ALARM on
panelID=xx,Ch=yy" or "ToutKA NAV ALARM panelID=xx" , where xx is
the Alarm Panel ID (1…16) and yy is the channel number on Alarm Panel (1…16)
 If the on duty officer does not reset the BNWAS within 90-180 seconds (adjustable from
setup-menu – see chapter Setup screen: crew alarm delay in Emergency Call Mode) after
the audible alarm in the on duty officer’s cabin is activated, the audible alarms in all
other officer cabins and a crew audible alarm is activated as well.

The BNWAS navigation alarm is acknowledged (the panel exits from this “NAVIGATION
ALARM” mode) if the RESET pushbutton is pressed. Also the Master, by entering in LEVEL2
of security, acknowledges the BNWAS navigation alarm. The remote RESET pushbuttons
(installed on bridge) cannot be used to acknowledge the BNWAS navigation alarm.

Notes:
1. If an EMERGENCY CALL is active on BNWAS panel, the BNWAS navigation alarm is
temporary disabled. Also, if a BNWAS navigation alarm is active, the panel can’t go to
EMERGENCY CALL mode.
2. If the BNWAS panel is in WATCH OFF mode, the BNWAS navigation alarm is
temporary disabled.
While the BNWAS navigation alarm is active and the LEVEL1 security is selected on panel, the
On Duty Officer cannot be changed.
When BNWAS navigation alarm is acknowledged, all alarms are cancelled and RESET
pushbuttons will be illuminated at backlight level.
Note:
Once a navigation channel generated a navigation alarm on BNWAS panel, it must be ACK
(locally on Alarm Panel or remotely via Ethernet ACK message by other Alarm Panels) in order
to be monitored again by BNWAS (with other words if a navigation channel alarm stays NACK
it will generate only once a navigation alarm on BNWAS) .

1.9) Operation and Configuration (set-up) Mode (Security Levels)

The BNWAS Panel knows 3 levels of security:
- Level 1: which is normal operation mode and this mode is entered as soon as one of the
power supplies becomes available.
- Level 2: which is operation mode protected by a password. Only the supervisor (the
Master) can enter in this mode. If no pushbutton is pressed within 60s, the panel
automatically returns to level 1 of security.

o Define the communication speed used for NMEA output messages

1.10) Both power supplies failing and internal faults procedure

When both power supplies are failing the following will happen:

o Fail output is activated (de-energized).

o In case one of the power supplies is restored, the BNWAS Panel enters the
normal operation mode and the awareness of the bridge officer is monitored.
When only mains power supply or backup power supply is failing the following will happen:
o Fault LED (red) will start to blink

o “M SUPPLY FAIL!” or “B SUPPLY FAIL” message will be displayed

on LCD. This message will disappear if the corresponding power supply
becomes good again.
When internal failure is detected the following will happen:
o Fail output is activated (de-energized).
o System On LED (green) will extinguish
o Fault LED (red) will be activated in some internal fault conditions
In case internal failure is detected, the unit needs to be repaired or replaced.

1.11) Dimming and background illumination

The activated lamps/buttons and the LCD display on the panel can be dimmed during the night.
The dimmed illumination level can be adjusted in normal operation mode by pressing the Left
Arrow button for more dimming (= less brightness), or Right Arrow button for less dimming (=
more brightness), in 8 steps. At power-up the dimming is set to no dimming.
The panel has background illumination, which shines through the text sheet for night visibility
of the text. The background illumination level can be adjusted in setup mode (level 3), and upon
power up the background illumination is set to this level.
The brightness of the maximum dimming level (=minimum brightness) will be considerably
higher than the background illumination level in order to avoid confusion if a lamp is activated
or not. The background illumination level and the maximum dimming level can be adjusted in
setup mode.

where XX is the ID of the panel, as configured in Setup mode. vA.BB.CC.DD is the

firmware revision number.
2. If the panel does not have a valid configuration:
No config!
Fw vA.BB.CC.DD
On the second line, the letters will be replaced as follows:
- “A” is the major build version of the firmware;
- “BB” is the minor build version of the firmware;
- “CC” is the update number on the minor build
- “DD” is a special customer build number (usually zero).

This logo message will remain on the screen for at least 3 seconds, even if the WATCH ON or
WATCH AUTO ON mode is selected and the watch timer is downcounting. If the panel is in
WATCH OFF or WATCH STAND-BY, the logo message will remain on the screen for 3
seconds, after which the screen will be erased.
During normal operation (WATCH ON or WATCH AUTO ON) and when no mains or backup
supply failures or Ethernet link failures are detected, the display will indicate the set-time and
the remaining time of the dormant period:
TIMER: 12m00s
REMAINING: 4m30s

During normal operation and if mains or backup supply failures or Ethernet link failures are
detected, the failure messages are displayed on LCD alternately with watch timer period, every
3s:

where:
- xx= Alarm Panel ID (1…16)
- yy= channel number on Alarm Panel (1…16)

1.14) USB Host

The USB Host has one USB port which can be used for attaching USB drives.
It can be used either for updating the firmware or for saving and loading panel configurations.
To save or load a configuration the USB drive can be inserted any time during normal operation.
Details about the saving and loading procedure are in chapter “Save and load configurations
to/from USB drive”.

1.15) Ethernet failure

In case the BNWAS Panel is connected to other panels to distribute the dimming level, the
following will be indicated on the LCD display in case of Ethernet failure (if the reporting of
Ethernet link failures was enabled from setup menu):

The alarm text for this failure is “LINK A FAIL!” or “LINK B FAIL!” (“A” for the first
Ethernet port, “B” for the second Ethernet port). If both ports have communication failures,
display shows “LINK A & B FAIL!”. Also, the FAULT LED will blink in case of Ethernet
link failures. This alarm disappears if Ethernet communication is restored.
Usually, Ethernet Link Failures are detected instantaneously (the moment they happen, without
any delay). No further action will be taken: only indication on the display.
If the Ethernet link is still good but one of the RX/TX Ethernet wires is broken then the
following message will be displayed: “ETH A CABLE FAIL” or “ETH B CABLE FAIL”
(“A” for the first Ethernet port, “B” for the second Ethernet port). If both ports have Ethernet
cable failures, display shows “ethA&Bcable FAIL”. This alarm disappears if it is
acknowledged and Ethernet communication is restored.

1.16) NMEA output message

The BNWAS Panel has an RS485 interface for outputting NMEA ALR messages according
with IEC 61162-1 standard. The ALR sentence has the following format:
$--ALR,hhmmss.ss,xxx,A,A,c--c*hh<CR><LF>

Where:

- $--ALR = message tag, $BNALR for BNWAS Panel,

- hhmmss.ss = time of alarm condition change in UTC format; because BNWAS

Panel doesn’t include a UTC time information, this field is left blank,

- xxx = local alarm number (identifier). In case of BNWAS Panel 000 will be used
(“automatic identifier mode”),

- A = alarm condition (A=Dormant period exceeded, V=Dormant period not exceeded),

- A = alarm’s acknowledge state (A=Alarm acknowledged, V=Alarm

unacknowledged),

 c--c = alarm’s description text; for the BNWAS Panel the following format is used
C1;C2;C3 where:
o C1 = BNWAS Watch Mode (AUT-for WATCH AUTO ON or WATCH
STANDBY, MAN-for WATCH ON and OFF-for WATCH OFF)
o C2 = Dormant period in minutes (03 – 12)
o C3 = Alarm stage (0- not alarmed, 1-alarm stage 1 (Bridge Alarm), 2-alarm stage
2 (On Duty Officer Alarm), 3-alarm stage 3 (Crew Alarm))
- hh – checksum

Example:
$BNALR,,000,A,V,C1=AUT;C2=03;C3=1*64

The NMEA ALR message is sent with any change of the BNWAS Watch Mode or dormant
period and with any activated or reset alarm.

The system can be configured using the buttons and the LCD in a Level 3 configuration mode –
the setup mode.
Normal operation is stopped when setup mode is entered, and is reinitialized when setup mode is
exited.

3.1) General usage notes

On a blank panel (a panel without a configuration), a temporary configuration with default
values is created when entering setup mode for the first time. In each setup screen, the initially-
displayed setting will be the default one.
On a non-blank panel, the existing configuration can be altered. In each setup screen, the
initially-displayed setting will be the one from the existing configuration.
The Left Arrow or Right Arrow buttons can be used to change the displayed setting. In Setup
mode, RESET and EM CALL buttons have other functions: RESET button is used to
acknowledge/store a modification of a setting and the EM CALL button is used to cancel a
modification and leave the setting unaltered. After pressing RESET button, the text “Stored!”
is displayed briefly; then the next setup screen is displayed.
To exit the setup mode and return to normal operation, Left Arrow + Right Arrow can be
pressed at the same time, from any setup screen (except where explicitly mentioned otherwise).
When exiting the setup mode this way, the altered configuration is permanently stored in the
Flash memory.
If the panel is powered down while in setup mode, no change will be written in the Flash
memory.
In the following paragraphs, unless otherwise mentioned, the setup screens are described in the
order in which they appear when the operator navigates through them.

3.2) Entering the setup mode password

The procedure to enter configuration level 3 mode is the same by entering a password:

To give a better idea of how the illumination looks like, half of the buttons are illuminated at
background level (simulating “off” buttons), and the other half are illuminated at dimming level
(simulating “on” buttons). The operator can adjust both levels with the arrow buttons, and this
will immediately be reflected in the illumination of the buttons. EM CALL button can be used to
toggle what should be adjusted: background or dimming. When both levels are set at the desired
levels, RESET button can be pressed for going to the next setup screen.
Upon entering this setup screen, the illumination of the buttons on the left half of the front panel
is set at the currently-configured background illumination level, and the illumination of the

When the arrow keys are pressed, the background illumination level is adjusted between 5% and
20%, in increments of 5%; the illumination of the “off” buttons is also adjusted accordingly.
If RESET button is pressed the currently-selected settings are stored, the illumination for all
buttons is set to the background level, and the next setup screen is displayed.
If EM CALL button is pressed the following text is displayed:
Adjust dimming
(StopHorn–bkgnd)

When the arrow keys are pressed, the dimming level is adjusted between 0% dimming (=100%
brightness) and 80% dimming (=20% brightness), in increments of 5%; the illumination of the
“on” buttons is also adjusted accordingly.
Although the background brightness can be set as high as 20% and the dimmed brightness can
be set as low as 20%, the panel will always keep a 20% “distance” between the two brightness
levels. If, for instance, the operator sets the background brightness to 15%, the panel will force
the dimmed brightness to at least 35%. If the operator sets the dimmed brightness to 25%, the
panel will force the background brightness to at most 5%.
If RESET button is pressed the currently-selected settings are stored, the illumination for all
buttons is set to the background level, and the next setup screen is displayed.

4) Save and load configurations to/from USB drive

During normal operation, if an USB drive is inserted, the panel will stop the normal operation
and will enter USB Load/Save mode. In USB Load/Save mode, RESET and EM CALL buttons
have other functions: RESET button will be used to acknowledge/store a modification of a
setting and the EM CALL button will be used to cancel a modification and leave the setting
unaltered.

4.1) Save configuration to USB drive

The following will be displayed if the panel has a configuration:
Save config
to USB drive?

This screen is skipped if the panel does not have a configuration. The screen in next paragraph is
also displayed if EM CALL button is pressed.
If RESET button is pressed, the configuration will be saved to the USB drive, in the root
directory, under the name BNWAS_XX.CFG, where XX is panel ID. Any existing file with the
same name will be overwritten.
The panel will exit USB mode and will restart normal operation if the USB drive is unplugged.

4.2) Load configuration from USB drive

In this step the panel will look for valid configuration files in the root directory of the USB
drive. A valid configuration file has a filename of the form BNWAS_XX.CFG (where XX is the
panel ID). It also has an internal signature, to prevent random files renamed as
BNWAS_XX.CFG to be interpreted as configuration files.

The following will be displayed on the LCD:

Load
<BNWAS_XX.CFG>?

XX is the panel ID of a configuration file which was found in the root directory.
If Right Arrow is pressed, the panel will look for the next valid configuration file and will
display its corresponding ID. If Left Arrow is pressed, the panel will look for the previous valid
configuration file and will display its ID.
If RESET button is pressed the selected configuration file is loaded and immediately stored in
the Flash memory. Then the panel will restart normal operation.
If EM CALL button is pressed the file will not be loaded and the old configuration will remain
in the Flash memory. Then the panel will restart normal operation.
The panel will exit USB mode and will restart normal operation if the USB drive has been
removed.

5) Ethernet communication with other panels

Ethernet communication is used for sending the backlight dimming level to other panels when
the operator changes it on one panel. The Ethernet communication is also used to receive alarm
messages from Mega-Guard Alarm Panels, if the handling of alarms associated with navigation
equipment is enabled from setup menu (via “Navigation alarm group” option).
Each panel has two Ethernet ports, and redundancy is ensured by connecting all panels in an
Ethernet ring. One of the panels normally “splits” the ring in order to prevent loops. When one
Ethernet cable is interrupted, or when one panel is malfunctioning or missing, the splitting is
automatically removed, so all the panels will continue to see each other.

6) Software upgrades using the USB drive

Software upgrades can be done using the USB bootloader on the panel.
The USB bootloader is capable of upgrading the following pieces of software:
1. Panel USB bootloader (self-upgrade);
2. Panel firmware;

The software must always be upgraded in the order given above, always to the most recent
versions received from Praxis, otherwise the panel might enter an irrecoverable state, after
which only the serial bootloader can be used for writing software.

1. The panel might not recognize a USB drive that has too many files/directories
in the root directory. Make sure you are using a USB drive with at most 10-20
 files/directories in the root directory.
2. Older firmware versions don’t recognize certain types of USB sticks. If you
have problems with a USB stick, try another one.

6.1) Panel USB Bootloader upgrade

The USB bootloader can be started by keeping the RESET button pressed during panel power-
up. After the bootloader starts, and before a USB drive is inserted, the version number of the
existing panel bootloader is displayed on the LCD. The upgrade process is described below.

For safety reasons, if you intend to keep the panel configuration, save it to a USB drive
 before upgrading the bootloader, then upgrade the bootloader, then upgrade the
firmware, and then load the configuration back from the USB drive.

The panel bootloader can be upgraded as follows:

Put the Panel USB bootloader file on a USB drive (USB hard-disk or USB memory
stick), in the root directory. The bootloader file has this filename:
o UniversalUsbBootloader.bin
 Start the bootloader on the panel (by keeping RESET pressed during power-up).
 Insert the USB drive. Within a few seconds, you are prompted with Update panel
bootloader? Answer Yes by pressing RESET.
 The panel starts looking for binary files in the root directory, and will display the
name of the first file it finds (on the first row), together with a few details about the
file (on the second row). The filename is truncated to 8.3 DOS filename format; this
is a limitation of the software. Here you can:
o Press LEFT / RIGHT to see different details on the second row. You can see
the following (not necessarily in this order):
 The binary type name. For the USB bootloader, this is “CPL-BL-
USB”. Don’t load a file whose binary type name is different.
Title : BNWAS Panel Page 33 of 52

 The panel type name. For the USB bootloader, this is “ALL-
PANELS”.
 The release version of the bootloader file, with the form X.Y.Z.W.
This must be the latest version you received from Praxis.
o Press RESET to load the bootloader from the USB drive and write it into the
panel.
o Press EM CALL to go to the next binary file from the root directory.
 Once you found your bootloader file, press RESET to load it on the panel. The
update process takes a few seconds, and then the panel restarts itself and the new
bootloader executes.

6.2) Panel Firmware Upgrade

The firmware can be upgraded as follows:
Put the firmware file on a USB drive (USB hard-disk or USB memory stick), in the root
directory. The firmware file has a name such as
BNWASPanelFirmware.bin.
 Start the USB bootloader on the panel (by keeping RESET pressed during power-
up).
 Make sure the panel is already running the latest version of the USB bootloader. You
can check this by starting the bootloader without inserting the USB drive: the
bootloader version is displayed on the LCD. This must be the latest version received
from Praxis.
 Insert the USB drive. Within a few seconds, you are prompted with Update panel
bootloader? Answer No by pressing EM CALL.
 You are prompted with Update panel firmware? Answer Yes by pressing RESET.
 The panel starts looking for binary files in the root directory, and will display the
name of the first file it finds (on the first row), together with a few details about the
file (on the second row). Note that the filename is truncated to 8.3 DOS filename
format; this is a limitation of the software. Here you can:
o Press LEFT / RIGHT to see different details on the second row. You can see
the following (not necessarily in this order):
 The binary type name. For the firmware, this is “CPL-FW”. Don’t
load a file whose binary type name is different.
 The panel type name. For the BNWAS Panel, this is “BNWAS-
PANEL”. Don’t load a file whose panel type name is different.
 The hardware revisions recognized by the firmware file.
 The release version of the firmware file, with the form X.Y.Z.W.
This must be the latest version you received from Praxis.
o Press RESET to load the firmware from the USB drive and write it into the
panel.
o Press EM CALL to go to the next binary file from the root directory.
 Once you found your firmware file, press RESET to load it on the panel. The update
process takes a few seconds, the panel will inform you when the update process has
finished.
 Remove your USB drive and reboot the panel.
