Question 1 [24]
A helical extension spring is to exert a force 36N when extended to a length of 84mm.
At a length of 70mm, the force must be 22N . The spring will be installed in a machine
that cycles through its load 180 times a day. The temperature will not exceed 100o . For
this application AST M A228 music wire is specified with a mean diameter limited to
± 28mm. Determine the suitable dimensions for the spring.
Question 2 [30]
A fruit crusher needs to be adapted to handle a fruit with a harder skin resulting in
greater crushing forces and a higher power being needed. The original driver is shown
in the sketch below. It has been estimated that the power will increase by about 50 %
where the 1.5 kW motor will be replaced by a 2.2kW unit. Your task is to redesign
the gear set for local manufacture to handle the increase in power. The design must be
compact, affordable and a life of certainly more than two years is required. The gears
will be produced with steel in a local workshop, where an accuracy of up to 0.06mm can
be guaranteed. The gear system is a single reduction 20o full-depth profile. Determine
al the necessary specifications (i.e. module, face width, factor of safety etc.) for the
gear set to ensure reliability and minimum wear characteristics.

Question 3 [27]
The shoes on the brake depicted in the figure subtend a 90o arc on the drum of this
external pivoted-shoe brake. The actuating force P is applied to the lever. The rotation
direction of the drum is counter clockwise, and the coefficient of friction is µ = 0.30.
(b) b) Draw the free-body diagrams of the handle lever and both shoe levers, with
forces expressed in terms of the actuation force P. (21)
(c) Does the direction of rotation of the drum affect the braking torque? (3)

Question 4 [24]
The schematic for the drive shaft of a new grinding machine is shown below. The
pulley will be driven at 2400 revs.min−1 by a 3.7 kW electric motor. The grindstone,
which is attached to the opposite end of the shaft will be 200mm in diameter and should
absorb approximately 3 kW of the available motor power when cutting. If the coefficient
between the grindstone and workpiece is considered to be 0.4, then a normal contact
force of about 400N should be present between the grindstone and workpiece during
grinding. The material used to manufacture the shaft is an alloy with σuts = 850 M P a
and σy = 700 M P a. Determine the minimum diameter for the shaft based on the
ASME equation for the design of shafts
