He loved nature, and often took his four sons for Jong walks in the Swiss countryside when they were young. He enjoyed reading the story Robinson Crusoe, and so he wrote a similar adventure story to read aloud to his children. The four boys in the book are based on his four sons. Years later, Johann David's son Johann Rudolf edited his father's 800 handwritten pages, and published the story for the first time in 1812 as The Swiss Family Robinson. The first English translation appeared two years later. Since then, it has remained popular with both children and adults, There have been several film and TV versions of the story.
